REACTION/QUEEN/ THE SHOW MUST GO ON (Expect some Tears)

Ойын-сауық

Show Must Go On" is a song by British rock band Queen, featured as the twelfth and final track on their 1991 album, Innuendo. It is credited to Queen, but written mainly by Brian May. The song chronicles the effort of front man Freddie Mercury continuing to perform despite approaching the end of his life, although his diagnosis with AIDS had not yet been made public in spite of ongoing media speculation claiming that he was seriously ill. When the band recorded the song in 1990, Mercury's condition had deteriorated to the point that May had concerns as to whether he was physically capable of singing it. May recalls; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling'-vodka down-and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal"

This video showed Queen behind the scenes and in concert at the peak of their career in the 80's (mostly)... There wasn't much footage after Freddie was diagnosed w/ AIDS, but he did appear in music videos in 1989 - '91... The music video for "I want it all" - Freddie appeared in baggy clothes and was unshaven... it was to hide his appearance, and he couldn't move like he used to. The video for 'The Miracle' - they used kids to emulate Freddie and the other members of Queen (he did appear briefly at the end). His last video appearance was for the 1991 single "These are the days of our lives"... It was impossible to hide his appearance - Freddie looked thin and frail as he barely moved to the song, and his last line of the song was, "I still love you." (It was written by drummer Roger Taylor to his family, but Freddie captured the emotion perfectly). The band, their managers and Freddie's ex Mary Austin knew he was ill, but they respected his wishes to keep it quiet... Freddie wanted to work on making new music, so they closed ranks and worked. They denied Freddie's illness to the press and even their families. Brian May recalled that Freddie could not work for long, so it took months to finish Queens final 2 albums - 'The Miracle' (1989) and 'Innuendo' (1991)... Freddie was struggling and in pain, but he would take shots of alcohol in the studio and then sing in the recording booth as best he could. Even after 'Innuendo' was finished, Freddie recorded more vocals that he knew wouldn't be finished before he died... That became Queen's final album 'Made in heaven', released in 1995. But by the fall of 1991, Freddie was too ill to work... he was flown back to England and spent months at his home while the British press dogged him... Just before he died in November 1991, he finally admitted that he had AIDS to the press.

Freddie Mercury wrote and recorded an album with Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballe. The title song, Barcelona, was meant to be sung at the the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. 3 of the songs are on video. All stunning. Barcelona, How Can I Go On, Golden Boy.

This truly fantastic Queen song recorded while Freddie was battling his symptoms from HIV/AIDS, “The Show Must Go On” is a compellingly powerful final coda to Freddie’s legacy. The song closes Queen’s final studio album, Innuendo, released during Freddie’s lifetime. While “The Show Must Go On” was mainly written by lead guitarist Brian May, the song’s theme is driven by the probability it would be Freddie Mercury’s “finale”. His severe symptoms made recording the album "Innuendo" extremely difficult. Freddie’s struggles with HIV/AIDS were kept secret from the public at large until his official 1991, November 23rd, press release divulging that he was, in fact, dying from AIDS-related complications. Previously the British paparazzi had speculated, cruelly, and reported, that Freddie was diagnosed with the disease (from the time his diagnosis was “leaked”), and proceeded to stalk him, adding insult to injury. Intentionally or not, Freddie’s announcing his illness on November 23rd was prescient: Approximately 24 hours after the press release, Freddie Mercury died. The “Innuendo” recording sessions were completed by November 1990; the album was released in February 1991. After those sessions, Freddie continued to record studio vocals as much as his health would allow. He loved his work; or rather, he passionately loved making music, and had always tried to keep his personal life private. During these last recording sessions sometimes Mercury was so ill he could barely walk, making the recording process erratic, emotionally wrought, and logistically difficult for the band, especially for guitarist Brian May, a studio perfectionist. Brian told a feeble Freddie not to over-exert himself during a session for the final track’s vocals, intimating he wasn’t up to the challenge. According to Queen lore, a frustrated Freddie responded by slamming a shot, or two, of vodka, saying, “I’ll fucking do it, darling”. May recalled Mercury’s performance: "He went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal" And the show has very much gone on …

Brian wrote this song but really didn't plan for Freddie to ever sing it. Freddie kept coming into the studio begging for songs to sing and he said they could do whatever they wanted with them later. Brian said when he was writing this song he had a vision of a sad clown who painted a big smile on his face before going out to face his audience. Freddie was so brave and never complained no matter how sick he was or how much pain he was in. I think Brian was thinking about how he would feel if he were in Freddie's shoes when he came up with these lyrics. Love this song, thank you for your reaction. Truthfully, the extra teeth had nothing to do with his voice but Freddie thought it did so he never had them removed, he also had a deadly fear of dentists.

I never became famous , just locally..but that is not what matters. What matters is the legacy he left behind. The incredible influence Queen was on generations of artists old , young famous or unknown. This is the real miracle , and the tell tale sign of a TRUE legend!!. Freddie's extra teeth had nothing to do with his singing voice, he was just a natural. He never had singing lessons or had a vocal coach, it was just pure natural ability. Also when you watch him sing, he opens his mouth wide a lot which creates more sound and clarity.

He usually watches or reacts to the official video. Which by the way was even made from clips from other music videos or archive images of the band. This is because when the song was recorded in the studio, Freddy Mercury was already very ill and physically deteriorated, so he could not make the music video for the song, much less perform the song in concert. So if you see that a video indicates that it is a live or concert performance, rest assured that it is most likely not true or that it is not Freddy who sings. The song was written by Brian May and the general idea is that he wrote it thinking about his partner Freddy...

BTW, Do you guys know about the auction of Freddie's personal items? Mary Austin has apparently decided to "put her affairs in order" and is selling 1,500 of Fred's personal items through an auction at Sotheby's. The online auction will take place on September 5, Freddie's birthday. BEFORE that, tho, some of the items will be on display at Sotheby's in Los Angeles and also at their other locations. (I WISH I could go see them!) ...When Sotheby's makes the auction catalogue available for sale online, I'm hoping to buy one... It would be a GREAT keepsake!

thanks, Jamie - I'm old, so I had to the privilege to see them several times with Freddie -- (P.S. Brian May wrote this song when Fred was ill..." Demo versions featured May singing, having to sing some parts in falsetto because they were too high. When May presented the final demo to Mercury, he had doubts that Mercury would be physically capable of singing the song's highly demanding vocal line, due to the extent of his illness at the time. To May's surprise, when the time came to record the vocals, Mercury consumed a measure of vodka and said "I'll fucking do it, darling!" then proceeded to perform the vocal line" )
