I’m surprised at your results. I have been using Qor or about two years, and I find them to be amazingly vibrant! I, too, squeeze them into palette pans, let them dry, and then rewet as I use them. Since this video is four years old, and I have only been using them for two years, perhaps they have improved their vibrancy in the interim. My box is also smaller, which might indicate that they may have made other changes also. I love Qor so much; they have rapidly become my favorite paints. Yes, initially they are more expensive, but a tiny bit goes a long way, so I think that makes up for the cost difference.

Hi Teoh, I can’t relate as I have been using Qor watercolors for the past 2 years and both the mini pan palette and tube colors are extremely vibrant, so much so that I’m constantly subdueing the intensity and vibrancy. I appreciate you showing the difference in pan vs tubes and also showing other comparisons. I live in Northern Ca and I sometimes need to spray dried pans from tubes a bit and they are ready to go!

We are now 2018. I just tested THE qor watercolours. I let them dry and with a little drop of paint from the tube I paint already a month. They react immediately with water and are very bright. Or they changed the formula, or the Klimat is better here... 😉 the only thing I can say is that with the 11ml I wil go a very long time...

I have used qor for almost a year now along with my Daniel smith and mission gold. They are by far probably the most vibrant when it comes to them lightening the least from wet to dry. I also have found no difference personally with the dry and wet paint. Both flow the same and are the same in intensity. They don't rewet as easily and Daniel smith but it doesn't take very long (maybe like 4 strokes) to rewet the pans to be just as vibrant as the tubes. Maybe their formulas are inconsistent?

QoR use their own binder. That may explain the difference between tube and pan performance

  • @CynCynea

Interesting, they may have changed their formula? I bought mine around one to 1,5 years ago and they're extremely easy to rewet (german climate) and definitely as bright and intense from the pan as from the tube. I still don't like them for other reasons, but they're totally suited for pans now, too :D

For those who are curious: abload.de/img/photo_2019-02-06_02-0qxkt4.jpg The left column are painted from the pan (spritzed them with water, didn't wait for it to soak in, almost never more than one brush stroke to pick up the pigment), the mid one is from the tube (right is just some other brands to compare luminosity). The value difference in the first rows is mostly because i found it easier to get juicy color from the pan than dissolving the tube color.

just as an experiment, I paletted just a tiny bit of each of the 34 Quor colors I have. I wanted to see for myself how they would react. What a disaster. These paints are definitely not designed for a palette. They lost every excellent feature that they have out of the tube. Quor is my number 2 go to for color, flow, brilliance. I love them! Daniel Smith is number 1. Seriously, don't ruin these by puttng them in a palette.

The high grade watercolors are all so good, across all the manufacturers. Daniel Smith, QoR, Sennelier, Schmincke Horadam: they're all so good! I'm glad I followed the advice of many knowledgable KZread water colourists, Teoh included, and restrained myself to some cool and warm primary colors, and some earth colors, and using a restricted palette for coloring in my sketches. One doesn't need 12 colors. Only 6 or 7 will do. I can mix the rest! ;-)

+Teoh Yi Chie There are paints that are the same formula for pans as tubes and the vibrancy is the same either way. This is because of the extra glycerin in the formula. This is Schmincke and Holbien. Unlike Winser & Newton that has a different formula for their pans than tubes. With research I found that there is Glycerin in the W&N pans and not much in the tubes. So now I mix glycerin in my W&N tubes and let dry and they re-wet so much better. I wonder of this will help with the Qor? Daniel Smith and M graham, Sennelier all have that extra glycerin too. Of course some pigments really are not good dried. In that case you can add honey to it also.

Very good review. I'll have to say that I don't understand people who make paint tins, unless you do plein or on-location painting. When I do get back into watercolor I'm only going to paint from the tube so vibrant color shouldn't be an issue for me. The price for getting that more transparent Aquazol binder is a little steep though.

Ichiro Fakename so I have been using Qor for about 8 months now. I’ve been painting almost everyday. Mine are more recent than this video though. So there may be a difference in formula. I highly disagree with most of his statements. He said they are hard to rewet. And I literally started yelling at my phone because mine are ALWAYS creamy. Like they never fully dried down. And that is something that Qor has said is common with their paints. My colors are also SO MUCH MORE VIBRANT!!! I highly suggest that you DO NOT paint from the tube. You will waste soooo much paint and you don’t get any gradual washes. It’s essentially like painting with super expensive gauche. I also don’t get ANY STREAKS unless I want to. I chalk this up to either user error OR there is an extreme possibility that since he produced this video, Qor has changed their formula.

That is so weird because I've been using Qor for about half a year and my colors are vibrant even though I use them dried into a palette. Also, I find them to rewet very easily, more so than DS but not as much as M. Graham or Sennelier. I find that with my paints, I don't have to mist the paints prior to working with them. I'm not sure why your set is having problems with vibrancy and re-wetting. Also, I agree with never putting any company's Viridian into a dry form if from a tube as real Viridian will always dry rock hard.

Her video was from 2019 and you did this one in 2015, I wonder if they changed the formula in the interim? She mentioned they contain a synthetic oxgall. Edit: Just saw on Jane Blundell's blog that she said in 2018 they do need to be used straight from the tube for best results.

Thanks for the great review. I've had similar experiences. I have been using QOR made into pans as well. In general, I haven't found it difficult to get strong colour, with the exception of burnt sienna and ultramarine. The burnt sienna is very weak and difficult to dissolve. You need to use a lot of ultramarine to get a saturated blue. However, 6 of the 12 i have are from the high chroma set, so that may be the difference. Their Transparent Pyrrole Orange is gorgeous - the best i've found. However, that said, I still don't think they warrant the high price.

I have the 6 Qor Introductory set that I don't think I will be pouring into pans. I also noticed that some handmade paints that use Aquazol as the binder are harder to re-wet. I'm sure I can add a drop or two of glycerin, gum arabic, or Kramer watercolor medium to make them softer but I don't want to mess with the mixture too much so I'll just leave them in tubes. I have read that Qor blues are some of the truest watercolor because there is no gum Arabic (with yellow tint)in them to shift the colors a bit but I'm just not that impressed with Qor. They're also very expensive so I don't have faith this brand will stick around given all the other better priced, better performing watercolors. Thanks for the video Teoh! Cheers.

I ordered a 12 color tester of qor on etsy and was shocked. They weren't vibrant even going down and just lacked something. I couldn't believe how muted and dull they all were. The only exception was quin gold deep so I did buy a tube of that but for such an expensive and overrated brand I don't understand. I have used Daniel Smith, Holbein, schmincke, Da Vinci, Sennelier, Maimeri blu, M Graham, Winsor & Newton, and Mission Gold. The only brand I had any issues with was M Graham but I figured that out so all of those brands are good. There are just honestly too many other good brands.

Were those tube paint squeeze into pans? The pans don’t work too well when reactivated with water. But they should be vibrant from the tubes.

Interesting as this is quite an old review. The colours also depend on whether you are using white paper, and sable hair. Synthetic brushes tend to hold more water and less pigment. All these factors contribute to how intense the pigment colour will be. After seeing other reviews in the last month or so Qor looks quite vibrant. I guess its best to test it yourself, Would be interesting if Teoh you tested it again now years on , what would you say now. Heres a link as they have changed the paints !!! kzread.info/dash/bejne/eYCHmtGxfdC2ntY.html

+Karen Howard Yeah, I get the feeling too. The colours from the tubes are more vibrant compared to squeezing them out to dry and using later.

Cotman is better than qor. After watching this I am amazed anyone buys it. This is one I won’t be trying.👍

The colours are vibrant when used from the tube. But don't dry them in pans.

I really dislike QoR watercolor, but I'm sure some people like them. It's like painting with alcohol ink and the results look dead and lifeless... not sure why..
