    Like every other Monitor-Brand, the letters are choosen completly logical/meaningful, too --> So its relatively easy. AW = Alienware 34 = 34" diagonal 23 = for year 2023/Generation D = "Dual" HD for 1440p W = "Wide" for Ultrawide F = FreeSync-Version

    In my opinion they should just keep adding characters. Like G for "glossy", ∆ for "triangle RGB", then maybe just arbitrarily decide π°-2 means "178 degree viewing angle" and add that to the name etc.

    @@CalasTyphos This is true with an asterisk, yes. Out of the box, at 3440x1440 resolution, only 60/100/165 Hz refresh rate modes are shown in display settings. 165 Hz only does 8 bit color with dithering, 100 Hz does 10 bit color. @@glitch2998 Still have it and love it. No issues, perfect out of the box. No marks on the screen from bubble wrap. It's tremendous quality and feel from the base to the panel. The only thing you have to get used to is the ultrawide format and get some addons that will crop to the screen if you want. I find that movies scale nicely, especially ones that were made with UWS in mind and videogames. KZread is hit or miss since most stuff is 16:9. You can still zoom in but most of the time I don't since I want to see everything. Go with the DW as the DWF still has HDR accuracy issues. As for gaming this screen is god like. @@Kyler_97 I have never heard the fan. That was one thing that put me off from it but I figured if it wasn't as loud as my PC then it wouldn't be a big deal. I do wear headphones a lot so that might play into it a bit but my PC and PS5 are way louder than anything else that I hear. My PC isn't that loud either. It's just above ambient room noise unless I'm playing a game. I've heard some people say that every monitor is different when it comes to fan noise but I think it's more down to how quiet the room they are in is. TL:DR. It's a complete non issue. Other than the price, this monitor is damn near perfect IMO. I upgraded from a 27" LG GL850-B.

    I'm glad I got the DW based on the hdr eotf curve. I've enjoyed the more accurate hdr presentation compared to my old X27. I was concerned about the fringing from the subpixel array but it turned out I don't notice it unless I REALLY try to look for it.

  • @Kenjis9965

    @Kenjis9965

    Жыл бұрын

    @@selynar4889 The reduction in pixel density wasn't as bad as I was worried about thankfully. I think the higher contrast of the OLED makes the text look sharper than you'd expect. I do not notice the fringing (as I said before) either which is good. It's not quite as crisp as 4k obviously. But Id say I think it's better than 1440p, though I've not used a 1440p display in a while. Colors are just amazing on it, though it took a little adjusting, the QDOLED is more accurate than the X27 in hdr (my color meter won't do HDR so I can't calibrate in hdr, only SDR) the end result can appear "flatter" to your eyes at first because it's a more accurate and less oversaturated presentation, this coupled with an overall lower average screen brightness in HDR can be a bit flat looking at first, go play a few games though and you'll realize it's a much better experience. Small highlights have more impact due to the per pixel lighting, details and bright areaa are "crisper" because there's no blooming from the dimming zones. Dark games like Darktide are absolutely stunningly beautiful even without HDR. I played one of the opening missions in Cyberpunk and the police car headlights during one of the background stories were literally dazzlingly bright. The tree in Elden Ring is magnificent, Overwatch 2 is smooth as butter and has very vivid colors. Mw2 looks gritty and real with stuff like overhead lights being very bright when you look up at them. I'm also a photographer who does photo editing on it and the color accuracy is fantastic for creative work as well. In my dark room the Alienware is way less fatiguing than the X27 in HDR and has a way better presentation due to the complete lack of blooming. In SDR there's no contest the Alienware just flat out wins because of the infinite contrast ratio. Motion is buttery smooth as well and you can easily hit 175hz with a decently capable GPU in lots of titles. I absolutely loved my X27 mind you and think it's one of the best LCDs you could get, but the Alienware is just better in every way.

    6:25 I was surprised by this when I first saw a QD-OLED panel in person. First thought it was running in limited range mode. It did seem like the subpixels were glowing slightly their own color so I wonder how much of this is reflected light and how much of it is ambient light exciting the quantum dots to emit light back. Either way it's nice to see it pointed out although as I mentioned in a comment on a previous video it would be nice to see how much that affects the contrast ratio values in a bright room.

However, I did buy the panel for its other strong points and I mainly game SDR 99% of the time anyways. I am not sure why the 10-bit colour restriction got a shrug off tho tbh. If the DW can do 10-bit at 144Hz then why on earth is the DWF lacking here. Manual timings seem to work via nvidia control panel but I can not get manual timings to work with AMDs software. It keeps calculating the G. Pixel Clock wrong, which then throws timing total off. The community over on Reddit has been a bit confused about how this monitor behaves compared to the DW for AMD vs Nvidia users specifically for HDR. The source tone mapping option doesn't show up for AMD GPUs while it does for Nvidia GPUs, but that maybe seems to be because it's always on by default for AMD GPUs? I know it's unlikely, but it'd be lovely to have some sort of follow-up from an experienced reviewer on whether there are differences noticeable in the behavior of the monitor when using one GPU brand over the other. Every big review I've seen appears to use Nvidia.

  • @monitorsunboxed

    I believe this is because on AMD it uses FreeSync Premium which already does source side tone mapping in supported apps/games. For what it's worth I primarily test on an AMD GPU, but B roll is captured in an Nvidia GPU. It looks pretty similar but can't say I did in depth AMD vs Nvidia testing

    This monitor with an AMD GPU is using it's AMDs own version of source tone mapping, which is supposed to be superior to the option, which is why it's grayed out. He reviewed using an AMD GPU and EOTF is still garbage and ppl confirmed it still clips early so not dynamic tone mapping like the AWs HDR 1000 mode either. Seems like HDR is borked on this monitor.

  • @BugLondon

    @BugLondon

    @@s1aver1 Isn't the clipping the entire point? It shouldn't be dynamic tone mapping. I imagine as a console option it's there so you can actually use the ps5 and xbox hdr calibration with the monitor and would work like the hgig option on lg tvs. And from what i've seen people are saying the source option fixes issues with hdr for them.

  • @s1aver1

    @s1aver1

    @@BugLondon Dynamic tone mapping is probably the wrong term. If you use the PC equivalent the Windows HDR Calibration app the the DW(HDR 1000) calibrates to 1000 nits as you'd expect but the DWF(no matter what you do) to 500nits this likely due to the overly bright EOTF tracking. So you are forced to choose between overly compressed range or clipping(if you just set it to 1000 anyways). The DW adjusts EOTF rolloff based on MaxCLL metadata I don't believe the DWF does this. Also adjusts EOTF rolloff based on and based on % Window to prioritizes preserving highlight detail where as the APL on the DWF in HDR 1000 seems more aggressive than Trueblack 400, which given the the panels limitations doesn't make sense for an HDR 1000 mode.

    Just got this, replacing an older AW3418DW (IPS). It’s fantastic, and the text fringing is not as bad as you would think. One interesting tidbit, if you Google for it you can run up to 150hz 10-bit color with a simple custom resolution profile, and it works perfectly. If you consider this monitor as a 144-hz gsync compatible 10-bit monitor, it’s well worth the current $800-$900 USD cost. Strongly recommend using a colorimeter to calibrate the monitor, it helps tame the over-saturation as the reviewer mentioned, it really helps. Works perfectly with Gsync, which was a big concern I had.

    The newer Freesync model AW3423DWF out of the box has a problem with HDR in games where black/very dark areas are actually grey and desaturated/washed out in color. I noticed the issue first in Resident Evil Village, and just recently again in Borderlands 3. You can work around the game HDR blacks-are-grey issue by using the monitor's on-screen display settings, go under Game, turn Console Mode ON, then under the same Console Mode setting, turn Source Tone Map ON. My brother has the older AW3423DW model and his monitor did not have this problem.

    @@RingTalks Might be hardware specific. I'm running an RTX 3070 with 5800X3D. For both games, the HDR looks great when the scene is well lit. I didn't notice anything off until I was looking at low-light textures indoors. For Resident Evil Village, I first noticed the issue during the first bit of gameplay in Ethan Winters' house, while you walk around the place holding the baby. Looking into the glass cabinets, instead of seeing the wooden texture behind the glass, I saw patches of grey. The first save point inside the church also had this kind of grey pattern where I expected to see dimly lit wood textures. In Borderlands 3, I saw this effect going on in pretty much every corner of a building, where the light was dimmest. Interestingly, using Win+Shift+S keyboard shortcut to take screenshots reverted the image (temporarily, for the screenshot) back to SDR, where the textures and color were returned to normal. Playing either game in SDR did not have this issue. I tried changing between 8 bit color with dithering and 10 bit color, updated graphics drivers, updated to Windows 11 (hoping the auto HDR would fix this issue. It didn't, would also have the same problem), disabling Gsync, disconnecting my second monitor, etc. Nothing fixed the HDR blacks in-game until I stumbled upon a reddit thread where someone said Console Mode + Source Tone Map fixed their issue: www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/yw1ekw/hdr_issues_with_new_aw3423dwf/ I'm definitely not alone with this problem.

    I'm normally a massive proponent of the Gsync module in LCD monitors due to Nvidia's excellent implementation of variable overdrive. I never see any ghosting or inverse ghosting on my AG273QG largely because it can switch overdrive modes depending on what I'm playing. However, I've decided to upgrade to this monitor over the variant with a Gsync module because you don't need overdrive on OLED monitors.

    I've had the DWF for a few weeks now and I love it. It's crazy how responsive this monitor is over my old LCD monitor. One thing Tim mentioned was how if you want 10-bit color you have to turn down the refresh rate to get it. What he didn't mention is that on the G-Sync DW model you can get it by turning the refresh rate down to 144 Hz, whereas on the new DWF model you have to turn it down to 100 Hz as there is no 144 Hz setting for the monitor. That is a much bigger sacrifice to get 10-bit color on the DWF. This is another thing Dell can fix with a firmware update though, so hopefully they do that. I've seen a lot of people complaining about it, so I'm sure Dell is aware of it.

You literally wrote "look at it from the perspective that you're doing your eyes a favour with the significantly decreased blue light" As in somehow blue light from monitors were causing big issues with people and all I was saying is that it was negligible if you didn't know as the sun according to different studies I've read puts out literally 100k the amount of blue light of most monitors so even one tenth of that would be so much more than any monitor that the amount of blue light from a screen shouldn't influence your buying decision as it makes so little of a difference. You never mentioned anything about sleep quality or anything up until your reply with me.
