She’s a beautiful bird. I grew up on a farm, and grew an appreciation for Chickens. They’re a lot more intelligent than people give them credit for, and make great lap pets 😂

My entire childhood we had chickens and I'd sneak them inside every once in a while, but there was only one that my parents enjoyed having inside because of how sweet and sociable she was, she'd fly on your shoulder and lap and watch us from on top of the fridge. I miss her and wish I had another little friend to watch me cook from her refrigerator perch.

A chicken is a bird, many people have pet birds...of ALL kinds! Its not the chickens' fault humans see them as little more than egg farms!

Your video was very informative and well thought out. Thank you for this! It brought back memories of when I had a chicken, Pepita, when I was eleven years old. She followed me everywhere, and loved to sit on my lap and relax. I will never forget what a beautiful soul she was! Chickens are wonderful!

She's too cute! We have two little adopted seabrights as well! I love their personalities. They've been very wary and skittish since we took them in but they're getting more used to eating from my hand and they've begun running to me when I come home because they know I give them treats. They're still not keen on being picked up and held but their progress has me hopeful. ❤

When I feed eggs back to my chickens, I drop them whole, shell and all, into the blender. Give it a good whirl and poor into frypan and scramble. This hides the shell well and makes tiny particals hidden in scrambled egg.

This is so sweet. There is a wild chicken who keeps trying to get in our house. She decided to live in our yard with our backyard. Chickens really really wants to come in the house. You are to allow her to maybe live in the house, even though we have dogs the dogs.

Hi, I have dogs that sleep inside, and at first they freaked out at my baby chick. My girl still does but her brother doesn't care much now. He'd rather sneak in the chicken run an eat their poop. Try having the chicken in a crate for a week to let the dogs adapt. Only take the chicken out of the crate when the dogs are outside at first. Then slowly reverse it, put the dogs in the crate, one at a time, and let the chicken walk around. It sounds like you could have a super cuddly chicken. The dogs will respect with slow training :)

Ren is beautiful and this video is so helpful. My bf recently got some chicks he's keeping in the house till they are bigger for the yard. I fell in love. As a former parrot owner and bird lover, it got me thinking, why not have one in my apt? One of his has bonded with me and really only ever wants to sleep on me. It reminds me of my parrot. They are sweet smart animals. Chickens aren't dumb and I hate when ppl say that. They all have these special individual personalities.

We have some indoor chickens. Some come in and out of the house like dogs, but we have a couple that really like to be inside. Our Polish girl Mavis is currently behind the television in the living room as she has decided that this location will be her broody spot! I love my chickens, they have their own room inside the house and come in each night. It gets kind of noisy in the morning but they are safe and have a great life! Put oyster shells in her food and you can skip the crushed egg shells.

I just adopted a disabled chicken. I started keeping her indoors, because she is mostly hobbling on the ground, and the rooster tries to kill her. One of her legs was injured by a previous owner. A lady online is making me a chicken wheelchair. I agree about birth control. I lost one a couple months ago from eggbound.

I've wondered how pet chickens are kept indoors, so thank you for explaining so much. I have a small outdoor flock of 4 standard chickens. Regarding food flying all over, have you tried fermenting her feed? If you feed her crumbles or pellets, fermenting reduces the dust. Mainly, fermented feed is easier to digest and chickens receive more of the nutrients in the feed. Enjoy chicken life!

Eggshell; get some water warm in a pot, when it starts to get warm you can start to rub the mucus part out, place the shell pieces on paper towels to dry out, turn the shells so they can dry through and through, place in pestle and mortar or a mason jar and the bottom of an ice cream scooper, crush up finely mix in with their food/slaw. By the way, beautiful girlie!!! 🥹 do you use a harness to walk her? I just got one for my girl, haven’t tried it yet, not nice enough yet.

You can crush the shells as small as possible and combine them with the egg before cooking so they can get the nutrients back, I do that with my hen when she lays, she doesn't anymore, not sure why but I think it's best bc when she lays she seems to stress out before laying bc she doesn't lay in one place at all.

a little late on this one but I dry my egg shells out before feeding them back to the chickens. if they are fresh they don't seem to eat them but especially if I have a bunch of egg shells I will throw them in my air fryer and set it to dehydrate. You can also just leave them out for a few days and they dry out.

Golden Seabrights! I raised a pair with my dad when I was young. At the time, my favorite show was 'The Wonder Pets', so I named my female Ming-ming and the male Buff after two pets in the show (okay, okay, so the turtle's name was actually Tuck, but I misheard it when I was like 8). Out of all the bantams we raised, they were my favorite pets.

For shells, I dehydrate them. I have a small dehydrator from Cabelas that works great for this. Then, once they're super crunchy, I put them in a Ziploc bag and pound them into nearly dust with a kitchen hammer. Then, sprinkle it over her food. This works especially well with scrambled eggs or other moist foods. As for the park - do you keep her on a leash? If so, I'd love to see how that works. I have 2 backyard chickens plus Rose, my adventure chicken. She's a Polish hen and lives inside with me and goes on trips wherever I'm going if it's overnight or longer (although she originally became an inside chicken due to aggression from the other two, she's now become practically my best friend, lol). Thanks for the informative video.

We rescued a flock of mostly bantams, got 2 big girls some how, one of the girls is pretty anti social so I am considering brining her in as a pet. Learning what that entails at the moment, will have to cage at night when the cats are in, looking to find out how much loose time she will need to stay healthy, already had a close call with another hen we brought in in an emergency, she was getting abused by her cage mates and needed nursing for a couple days but developed digestive distressed from lack of activity in a relatively short period of time. The flock will be moving to a bigger property soon where they will be free ranged during the day and I have to decide if we are keeping her soon, I'm afraid with her tendency to wander off alone she will be more susceptible to predation....

Oh, dustbath in house...not good. Dust will fly and gritty dust everywhere. Maybe a porch? Backyard? She prob has no insects living on her and thats why birds dust bathe, to kill those. She'll still be happy just going thru the motions of a dust bath on your living rm carpet. The fact that she is so calm and tame showes her to be happy and well adjusted. Well done!

I have had backyard chickens for the past 12 years. So I like to think I know a thing or two about chickens. And from what I found over all of my years of owning them they don't mind the heat as much as they mind the cold I live up here in the Pacific Northwest so they are exposed to a lot of rain and in my own personal experience. They generally like to try and stay inside on those especially rainy days. Personally would I ever want to keep my chickens inside and do the whole cloth diapering thing probably not. I think they belong in a nice coop with other birds. Because I think they enjoy getting to have their own space. And getting to have other birds around them. We currently have six right now and they go along perfectly fine and I don't think they would be particularly happy. If I brought them inside I don't think they would be as happy however I have had little chicks inside and they seem to enjoy it more than the older birds. But we have them in an apartment and we did not have a good setup mainly. Because we didn't have diapers for them. They just enjoy The Great outdoors. Obviously some chickens are different mine just so happened to like The Great outdoors.

I have some Sebrights among other bantam breeds.... Not inside, I built a large coop and have a 10 by 8' shed to shut them up every night and open every morning to keep safe from predators. I also let them free roam everyday, all day and have food in their coop and their hangout spot. I have little bowls of their food I add water to and big bowls (fortiflex feeder pans) for dry food. They eat up the wet food and love it, fresh daily. Also an option for indoor chickens, a simple little kiddie pool with some dirt for dust baths.

On the topic of feeding my chickens eggs… My chicken lays eggs and the occasional egg gets cracked. Just the shell and doesn’t pierce the membrane. I peel the eggshell off the egg in pieces and feed it to them that way. If I finish all of the shell I just let them eat the egg flat out. Not cooked. They really like the raw egg and every time I pick up one of her eggs, they come running lol. So that’s how I do it at least.

Hiya, I just found your channel when searching chicken diapers which are really helpful.. thanks :) Anyway, I decided to watch from the beginning because I think Ren is/was cute. I've only had chickens for a few months and love it. Mine are outside tho. If I didn't have indoor cats, other than my 6wk old rooster, I'd have his dad inside to give the girls a break. (Baby is being sold) You mentioned in this one about making the shells more palatable.. I cook the eggs, shells and all and mix them with half cooked rice. If you add some diced cooked apple it sweetens it and the shells absorb the moisture. Just crush them really well. You could also add a small handful of dry rolled oats lightly mixed. Mine go nuts over it. My rooster doesn't like eggs unless I make it tasty. Also for an upset tummy or sour crop, or as I'm dealing with at the moment, vent gleet, try a mix of fully cooked rice and wheat soaked overnight with a teaspoon of natural unsweetened yoghurt per chicken and 2mls yakult probiotic. :)

Thanks so much for your content! I have indoor/outdoor hens (2). I haven’t found a diaper that works well. You mentioned FB and Instagram but I haven’t found the kind you have. Do you know the username of where you got them? Thanks!

The one she's wearing in this video is from Shannen Sews which is also available on Instagram and Etsy. The sizing however has changed since this was purchased, so be sure to review her size chart - she includes all the measurements and everything! My current favorite are Peckingtons (also available on Etsy) but they are on hiatus until February.

Reading comments…haven’t seen anything about laying her eggs in her diaper. How do you manage that? I’ve had an indoor rooster for over a year, but adopted a young hen about two months ago so they’ve been living outside, but I’ve very recently been letting them in for brief visits. Both are clean and quiet. I used to keep a puppy pad under his favorite roosting spot, and he seldom pooped anywhere else. Not fully housebroken, but not far from it; thank goodness chickens don’t pee, so cleanups aren’t bad! (No carpet in house.)

She had a birth control implant that prevented egg laying. In between implants, I would only use diapers that could accommodate poop and and egg and/or let her go diaper-free when I sensed an egg was coming.

I just recently ended up with a house chicken, she's 2 months old.. one of my hens hatched her out with 5 siblings. She tends to get herself into trouble and need rescuing and so since I was the one to help her get unstuck from a pet pen panel at a month old, she seemed to imprint on me, she had been nervous around humans up until that point. The following couple of weeks she started following me around outside and isolating herself from the other chickens in the barn.. she stopped eating even though the other chickens aren't mean to her at all. She cries if she loses sight of me... So she's in the house lol, not at all something I ever expected to happen. She does have to stay in a cage/enclosure due to my other pets but she is happy as can be living this way.. it's very interesting lol.

It's challenging! I've fortunately always found my vet through recommendations from friends. The best way is to call avian specialists in your area of a neighboring major city.

you seem like an amazing person and someone who i would get along with super well!! i also support adopt not shop 🥰 i have a question: i’m thinking of taking one of my chickens indoors, shes a rescue chicken and she is a cornish cross. my question is would she just lay eggs in the diaper with all the poop? because that seems a little gross and unnatural to me but i really want to take her inside. 🥰

It's the best thing to have a chicken companion living in close quarters. This sounds amazing! You can let her lay in the diaper, as long as the pouch is big enough to accommodate the volume of her egg and poop. Or, when she goes looking for a nest, take the diaper off.

Ren does not but I have a new bird named Tina that will yell when I leave the room. It doesn't last very long. If this is a problem you're experiencing, I would offer treats while you're leaving so they are distracted as you exit.

just found this video by randomly looking around and don't have any hen experience so perhaps my suggestion are really stupid for some reason, but to your question to have to make them enjoy the egg shell better. Perhaps you could do like I have done for plants and stuff which was to grind the egg shell in a mortel or something. It makes a fine white powder which I guess you could just mixed in with whatever else you are feeding her? It will be like a powder coating, or perhaps it could even be mixed in a mixer with water to make a shell infused type of drink that still just tastes as water. What does all you hen connoisseurs say? Is it Jay or Nei?

This is definitely the most common advice I've received! Be best thing someone told me was to dry it out in the microwave and then crush it.
