    Lately, we're doing 12 hours with diaper and then 12 hours diaper free. In general, it depends how much poop they make, how bad it smells, and how big the diaper is. When they're wearing diapers full-time, I'll do it 1-2 per day. OMG, they are soo messy when they eat. I nought a $10 boot tray from Target to put under the food bowl so most of the flying pellets end up on the tray. I also have a hand vacuum for the ones that they launch across the room lol

    The way i would change my chicken’s diaper is by kneeling on the floor and sort of hugging him by wrapping my arm in front of his chest so he doesn’t run away.

    I have raised chickens and other poultry for years and every time one gets injured or sick or I need to bring it inside for one reason or another it always occurs to me that if not for the feces issue they would make excellent house pets. I knew that diapers for chickens were a thing but I didn't realize they were this advanced in their construction. In my experience chickens poop very frequently. How often do you need to change their diaper daily? And do you let the chicken sleep with it on?

  • @renthehousehen

    @renthehousehen

    I change it at least once per day. Some I let sleep with if it doesn't seem to bother them but, I have one chicken that sleeps diaper free cause she's more comfortable

    @@renthehousehen thanks for the reply. Honestly that shocks me. I would have expected three or four diaper changes a day. The more I watch your channel the more I think that I should give this a try. I currently have a 7-year-old chicken named Jane who I believe is getting towards the end of her life. She's pretty sick right now. I have brought her indoors a few times recently just to make sure that she got a good meal away from the others. I tend to have better success doing that than isolating sick chickens by themselves the way most other poultry owners recommend. It usually turns into a mess within about 5 minutes lol but maybe the experience will be better with one of these diapers.

    @@Hellothere149able if the poo is watery, it will need to be changed more frequently than if solid. Bringing her inside would be a great bonding opportunity for you as she's nearing end of life. Even if diapers don't work, I use a waterproof blanket and puppy pads to manage one of my hens poo. I place them in all the places she likes to hang out!

    @renthehousehen I have a vision impaired chicken and have considered bringing her inside. They only issue is the dogs, she is uncomfortable around them. I have also questioned , and will inquire about our waste water cleaning, can our systems handle chicken poop? I know that cat poop is an absolute NO because of parasites ( toxoplasmosis) but I would like to know if there is anything in chicken waste that would tax our water recycling and filtration system, if you know about this please comment. Thank you.

    Do you ever add a tissue inside the lined diaper to aid poo removal? Does Ren ever get poo stuck on her rear feathers? How many diapers do you use in a day? Another wonderful video I will revisit when I get some tiny chicken diapers for the bantams!!

  • @renthehousehen

    @renthehousehen

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yay! You and the bantams are going to become best friends. I don't use tissue because I don't want to touch it on the way out but, I know others do this to absorb moisture! Ren rarely gets poop stuck in her butt feathers. My friend has a silkie that gets really bad poop clumps stuck in her butt feathers. When that happens, I put them in a shallow bath and rub the clumps with my hands 🤮

    I don't have a chicken (my friend does and I love her!) but I am a longtime rat person and my experience with animal shelters has been the same -- they don't want to let me adopt without proof of a large cage but I don't cage my rats, they are house rats! I have still managed to adopt from them tho. I have to explain my case to different people and decided to show them pictures of my house as that is their "cage" afterall! Surely if you directed the shelter to your channel, someone with some common sense would approve you?
