Putting the 80's Back on the Streets! 1986 Nissan 300ZX

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Z31 chassis Z car is often forgotten about by most Z enthusiasts and is considered the red-headed step child of the Z car family. This 300ZX has been an absolute blast to own and drive while it worked, except time got away from us and we need to catch up on some issues that have left this one off the road. Join us in reviving this 80s classic and putting it back on the road where it belongs.
Notable Parts/Vendors used:
Pucker Factory Fab - Cross Over Pipe: puckerfactoryfab.com/
Z-Spec Design - Z31 stainless steel engine bay hardware kit: zspecdesign.com/

Not sponsored by any of the above vendors, I bought all the parts with my own money.

    This is 10/10. I’m about to embark on the exact project. This video allows me to know exactly what to expect. tho I can’t believe you didn’t take it out for a spin at the end of the video to wrap things up. I can’t wait to see what you have next with this car

    Thanks a lot. Part of why we started this channel was to keep motivated on our projects. If you liked the 300ZX content and you haven't already, please subscribe as we also have a 300ZX Turbo that has not made it to the channel yet that is currently undergoing some major work. This video was pretty detail oriented, and it's hard to strike a balance between showing too much with the level of effort it takes versus leaving out content and keeping the video shorter. How did you feel about the level of detail shown?

    Great video, my Z is currently having issues and I haven’t been able to drive it in a few months. After running for a while it would begin to smoke and overheat. Is that just the fault of the radiator or what more could it be?

  • @Dan_And_Daves_Garage

    @Dan_And_Daves_Garage

    The simplest thing would be to make sure that there are no air bubbles in the coolant system. One of the spill-free bleeding funnels makes the job really easy, and they are cheap. If it's still overheating, I'd probably get one of the headgasket test kits that changes colors by testing your coolant for exhaust fumes. This way, you don't throw parts at it if there is a more serious issue at hand. I personally only have had old brass radiators be a little weepy, but never really the cause of overheating. I replaced the radiator on my 80 series when it was leaking, and it never overheated. Make sure you have all the fan shroud plastic and have properly bled clean coolant. These cars aren't known for overheating easily, but aren't impervious to neglect. Hopefully this helps.

  • @Dan_And_Daves_Garage

    You just need to start simple and find one that is already complete and original. This way, you learn basic maintenance and fix things as they break. When you get more comfortable, you can begin buying "barn finds" and doing basic restorations. Stay away from barn finds initially or bikes that are in pieces or incomplete. Hopefully, this helps.

    How hard is it to replace the timing belt?

  • @Dan_And_Daves_Garage

    @Dan_And_Daves_Garage

    3 ай бұрын

    In reality it's all nuts and bolts. Just a lot of steps to reach the belt and the added pressure that if you screw up you will destroy all your valves if you are off by more than a tooth. Besides that, no real special tools besides a puller to remove the crank pulley. Plenty of really good guides on youtube and forums to follow directions with a lot of tips and pointers available.

    Good point - not a lot of use in criticizing without offering any information! But I do have to agree that those plugs are looking very rich. And I’d say the engine is probably burning oil. Also, there’s a spark plug tool included in the factory tool kit in the trunk. Easier to use (to me, anyway) than the fuel hose trick, though it obviously does work!
