Installing a Z32 Transmission In the Z31
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In our never ending hunt for a reliable transmission for the Z, I finally bit the bullet and bought a brand new Z32 30a transmission for the Z. In this video I swap the pathfinder 30a bell housing I have onto the Z32 to mate it up to the Z31 engine without the need for a new flywheel and starter.

All the hard work will pay off in due time, thanks alot for the content. Sure does look nice with that new trans, I'll be sure to keep you in mind if I have any questions with mine🤘
Great job on another informative video. I'm getting ready to do the same swap, but I'll probably mount the starter on the transmission instead with a spacer plate. This video will be a perfect guide for everything else!

I've never seen it done that way! Let me know how it goes!
I experienced that weird binding on mine too. Luckily I noticed it when installing the shifter and got it fired up. It has something to do with the part that cracked on your truck 30a it seems like if it’s not in the right spot it binds up.
Ayyyy I did one too on my 1988 turbo 300zx
Hey man, I am a big fan of your channel and love seeing the progress on the Z. I currently own an 88 z of my own and stumbled on yet again another issue. I am having problems finding another throttle cable and wondered if you could do a video talking about possible replacements. I am looking at a 200sx throttle cable, but would the part be interchangeable?

I'm not aware of any cable other than a stock z31 cable that works. You can try looking for a z31 cable though. They were available new until recently. Looks like they just went out of stock but if you call around to your local dealers you may be able to source one still. It's part number is 1820001p02
so what would be easier? installing the engine and other insides from the z32 into the z31 OR trying to fit the body frame of a z31 onto a z32?
Nice video! Great work. Just wondering if the stock z32 shifter rod would have positioned the gear stick in a more central location. From the video it looks like your shifter is closer to the centre console than central.

From what I've heard you need to cut the car to use a stock z32 shifter. It's decently longer than the shortened bracket
can you tell me the Fidanza maxima flywheel part number, I have a brand new trans like you, but want to use brand new z32 starter

I have a 30A - in great condition I live in ABQ.

How many miles are on it, and is the mileage verifiable?
Hey bro I got a question and since you know a lot I figured I'd ask you. What i wanted to know is can i take a t5 from a 1984 Nissan z31 turbo and put it in a 1987 mustang GT. Also my stang is a auto, so im planning on converting it to a stick shift.

As far as I know I don't think they're the same. The bellhousing for sure is different but I believe there's some other differences as well. If you had a used mustang trans you wanted to swap the gearset into that may work. But again I'm not really sure what the differences are
Just picked up an Xterra 30a and I’m planning on doing this. Any advice you would recommend after doing this? Do you still have the driveshaft you used in this video since you swapped it for a z32 trans?
@TheZGarage
Жыл бұрын
The drive shaft for the pathfinder and the z32 transmission are the same length so I only had to get the one
Great video 👍🙏 Does the stock z31 driveshaft go in without a problem.?
@TheZGarage
Жыл бұрын
No you need a custom driveshaft to use a Z32 style 30a because the case length is different

@The Z Garage i see where did you get yours.?

I got mine from shaft masters. They have stock z31 drive shafts, but if you tell them the length, what differential (the z31 has a few different flanges), and transmission you have, they can make you a shaft to fit any transmission

@@TheZGarage great i was thinking of buying a driveshaft from them anyway.. might as well take care of the transmission in the process, thanks.! 🙏
Hi … I got an 87 300ZX 4 seater Turbo ( I’m from Canada ) .. It’s an automatic I really want to properly do a manual conversion .. What are my options here ? Which manual transmission does my car need since it’s a 2+2 Turbo ? Thanks in advance.. hope to hear 👂

All transmissions that came in all z31's can swap with each other without issues. However, being a turbo car I recommend either the t5 transmission or 30a transmission as they hold power a lot more reliably than the 71c. The 30a is the best if you can find one, but on a stock car any transmission in good condition should work just as well as the other.

So I have a 1986 Z31 turbo, and I want to swap it from auto to manual, what would be the cheapest/easiest transmission to install? Not planning on doing anything crazy with the car so I assume it would be a z31 transmission
@TheZGarage
Жыл бұрын
Yep, a z31 transmissions would be the easiest and cheapest to swap. Any of the 3 are bolt on, with the exception of the driveshaft. You would need a custom drive shaft if you used a 30a transmission since it never came in the early year cars.

@@TheZGarage Ok thanks a lot, appreciate what you do
I am doing the same. What did you do with the speed sensor?
@TheZGarage
Жыл бұрын
I'm going to be running a Z32 speed sensor wired into my gold box. You could also use a z31 30a speed sensor which is also electronic on 87-89 Z's it should plug and play. If you have a cable driven speedo, I'm not sure what would work.
How did you get the speedometer to work with the z32 trans?
@TheZGarage
Жыл бұрын
If your Z is cable driven you can use a 30a pathfinder speed sensor and if it's the later style electric sensor, a z32 speed sensor will work. You may need to play around with the gear on the end though to get the right tooth count so your speed is correct.
With a z32 crank a z32 trans is a bolt on swap right?
@TheZGarage
2 жыл бұрын
Correct. In that case you would use a Z32 crank, flywheel, and starter. I'm not sure of all the differences between a z31 and z32 crank on the front end. The way the oil pump and drive belts line up might be different
Hows its drive the bell housing is it holding up?

hey! i’m pretty new to working in cats but i just recently bought a 88 2+2 non turbo and my fuel pump isn’t turning on, i went and replaced it thinking it wasn’t working, but after replacing it still no buzzing when i turn the key into the ignition

First thing to always do is check for power at the pump. Use a multi meter to check for power at the harness in the trunk. If it's getting power then your issue is pump/harness related. If it's not then start working your way backwards to the fuel pump relay, and then the fuses. Remember the fuel pump will only prime when the car is not running so it will not get power constantly. Don't get fooled if you don't see any power, make sure to cycle the key and see if it changes.
You were locked in two gears because you removed the check ball(s), and played around too much, or purposely put it in gear. The correct solution would have been to pound out the fork retaining pins and then you're free to mess around with the rod(s).
