In my season of life (adult children), I’ve discovered that secret to happiness is to have the smallest purse possible, with built in slots for cards. Shout out to all the Moms whose purses resemble diaper bags - I actually remember those days with fondness.

This is always a great thing to do. A wise woman taught me: When you are delayed somewhere, waiting for an appointment, it can be an opportunity to go through your tote bag, or your wallet, or your purse. And of course, you are not going to throw anything out there that needs to be shredded. But, often, there are just little pieces of papers, notes, weeks old shopping lists, that can just be put in the trash. And the things that need to be safely shredded, usually there’s a little plastic bag in there or an index card that can be folded around what you need to dispose of later. It does two things: it makes your purse or tote bag a little neater, and it makes the time go by when you are forced to wait beyond your appointment time.

Hi from Melbourne, Australia! I did this a few days ago, i tend to swap bags and then leave random stuff at the bottom of the previously used one. So I had 4 bags/backpacks to clean out the bottom of. Now I have one clean current bag and all the rest are empty ready to use when I change again. Feels so good! Thanks for this video

😃 Another great "challenge" video! 👜 🎒 Love getting to "see" & "join" you daily to make life a little simpler & definitely MORE organized. TIP for all those extra gift & rewards cards for me to manage better: I use a smaller credit card holder wallet (or small zippered pouch) & transfered all those infrequently used cards out of my regular wallet into the other one & only kept my most frequent cards used in my "main" wallet. I still have all my cards just-in-case I need/want to use those infrequent cards as the need arises. This has worked for me for 10 years now. Hope it's a helpful tip for others who find thselves still with lots of these cards even after purging those no longer using/wanting. 🙂👍 Blessings!

Aw, I agree wholeheartedly with Phyllis Marie (the commenter below.) I remember those diaper-filled purse days with much fondness, too. I miss when our son was little. I also downsized my purse, and recently I took my last regularly-sized purse to the thrift store to donate it because I will never use it. For the past few years, I have only used a little wrist fob purse that only holds a very small amount of things. We don't use credit cards, so I just need my debit card, drivers license, and a few more small things. It is very lightweight and so easy to deal with. My husband and son used to call my purse "the black hole" and absolutely hated looking for something in it! LOL! I am ashamed to think of all the junk I actually carried around, and now I feel so light without it. God bless you, Steph!

My favorite habit that I do is going through the mail the moment it comes in the house. No mail buildup. None. I use to pile it so high. The 5 minutes I take is so worth it. I go through every thing and open every letter. Yay! So I confront the mail. I don’t let one letter sit for later. No kidding. I throw out envelopes and all ads. Then the action pile is small. I leave that letter or letters out to be worked on the next day. I love it. No more guilt or procrastination!!!

I used to carry around a bag with "just in case" items. It was stuffed. I brought it with me every time I left the house. In an effort to become more minimal, I stopped carrying the bag. I decluttered the bag and still keep a few "just in case" items in it and it is available for if I ever really do need it. Years ago my mom commented how heavy my bag was. My dad asked what was in it. I was embarrassed to tell him that there were "personal care" items in there. He replied, "Maybe you'll have to stop 'caring' so much." My dad was very "pun-ny'.

I always found that keeping one bag makes life easier. I also clear the bag of things I no longer need every time I use the bag. Everything stays in one bag and you know where everything is. I know that sometimes when people are switching bags they forget to put things in the new bag. I prefer a bigger bag because I like to keep a book, a water bottle, and food in the bag. A small bag does not fit what I need.

We made this a family affair… I weighed my purse before and after cleaning it out. I was shocked at how much extra weight I was toting around that I simply didn’t need. My kids are home for school vacation so I asked them to guess how much their backpacks weighed, then we weighed them fully packed after a week of school. I asked them to go through their bag and take out things they don’t need for school. We re-weighed them after and then made deliberate choices about what was worth the literal weight in their bags and added a few things back in. This was truly eye opening to see the emotional vs physical weight of the items we carry with us.

I agree that keeping your purse under control gets so much easier once your children are grown. It’s easier to keep track of what you’ve added to your purse while you were out and about and remember what to take out of it before you put it away when you get home. I still carry a large purse though, and 20 years ago figured out that it’s worth the investment to buy a real leather one as they’ll last for 10 years or more if you take good care of them. Part of that for me is cleaning it with leather conditioner on or around the 10th of every month which gives me an opportunity to do a deep decluttering of my purse and wallet in case I’ve missed something. Curious if anyone else has ever heard that our purses should only weigh 5% of our body weight, cleaned it out to that weight after multiple tries and weighing, then as you were leaving the house through a few extra things inside to take with you. 🤣

We buy lotto tickets when we have a bad streak of luck so just incase our luck changes in the form of winning the lotto. Until we find out we haven't won, we plan what we would do if we did win. I have a notebook filled with lists of people we want to help, the small town we would build that would have all kinds of business/shops that our friends could run based on their talents and hobbies so they can quit the daily grind and do what they love. 24hr daycare for CO friends that need it, a nursing home so our older loved ones can get quality care close by our homes, gardens to feed the whole community, rv park, motorcycle repair shop and of course somewhere will be a dirt racetrack for my husband and his racing buddies. It's always fun to dream of what we could accomplish if we win.

Hi Steph. I basically clean out my purse every night once I am home for the day...remove any receipts, and put away the lipstick for the day (I'll be putting in a different one depending on my outfit the next day). I rotate thru my credit cards each day to keep them all active, so there are actually 7 of those in my wallet in addition to my license and medical insurance cards. I carry a minimal amount of money, and try to limit the number of coins because those can get heavy when you have too many. I also keep a pen in my purse. My cell phone comes out of my purse when I get home, and goes back in when I am going out. My sunglasses are usually on my eyes if it is sunny and then get put away when I get home, but if it gets cloudy, I will put them in my purse and then take them out when I get home. I have a home for my keys and sunglasses and a small umbrella in a basket on the table just inside my door, and that is where they go once I get home. I think I have the purse decluttering down ok. It is all the horizontal surfaces and "hidden" areas that I am still working on! Bless you for doing this challenge with us!

After having kids I realized that purses annoyed me so I would just throw my wallet or brush or whatever into the diaper backpack. 20 years later I have realized that purses still annoy me, so I have the smallest crossbody ever and still I rarely use it. Usually I just grab my wallet for e r r a n d s, saving my small crossbody mostly for travel. So, it's easy to clean out since it is rarely used! Go us !!! I cannot believe we are up to day 20. I still keep hoping that I might win the local give back but I do know that I've already won the decluttering mission tenfold! Our neighborhood is having a spring garage sale and I thought we would have nothing to put into it but turns out my declutter one-a-day items are adding up from this past week 🥰

My purse is like a magic trick. When we go places with friends I get asked, "Hey do you have any _____?" I have things for so many situations and it's all recently been relocated into a purse I got at the thrift store for $3 and it has so many compartments that I'm in organization heaven! I can even zip them closed so when my purse gets dumped over on the floor board it aint going now where!

Thanks for the prompt Steph!! I don’t know if its just me but I find clearing out my handbag and purse so liberating - it literally and figuratively makes me feel like I have shed tons of stuff from my shoulders that I carry around with me all day. I am one of those people that has a Mary Poppins bag of stuff - because you just never know when you might need it when your are out and about huh? I think its a throw back to my job when I was always on the go and was carrying my office with me in the car all the time. Anyway, it all feels a lot more organised at any rate!

The pandemic really helped me to establish a clean and empty purse. And so with a baseline of an empty and clean purse. it is easy to maintain! It also makes changes purses a breeze! I took this opportunity to purge some old purses that I no longer use or need.

My first thought was this will be easy since I usually clean my purse and wallet weekly. Then panic struck thinking of decluttering/purging purses and wallets...as in plural and having to decide which to keep and which to go. Purses/wallets are one of my guilty pleasures.

Since all my children are grown and gone now, I have a very small purse. I keep bare minimum in there. Wallet, lipstick, keys, a pen, a comb and a small tube of hand cream. I use Fetch rewards so I scan my receipts as soon as I get home and toss or file them. My purse has not been an issue in years. The only thing that accumulates in there is change

It was a 2 minute declutter today. Due to a shoulder injury, I no longer carry my large (suitcase) bag, with everything, but the kitchen sink. I do have a few minutes of things in a bag,in the car for those emergency moments.

This is one I overlook a lot. Don’t really have a purse. More so a back pack with all the kids stuff in it and then I just toss my wallet in. But it’s good to go through and make sure stuff is still useable and extra snacks are in there too :)

I always have the smallest bag possible (so newborn phase is so hard for me with all the stuff you need traveling with a newborn 😩). Less space means less stuff and less stuff lost at the bottom of my bag! 🎉 I switched to a small backpack style purse recently and I love it! Now my bag doesn't slide off my shoulder and whack my kids in the head when we're getting in the car or playing at the park.

This is such a good declutter to add to a regular routine. What I loving the refer to as my “mom bag” can collect some of The most random of things. As ur kids grown, they quickly need or suddenly don’t need things so it’s so important to keep up with this for me to avoid packing around pounds and pounds of stuff in the mom bag!!!

Great tips. In the UK we call this a handbag & a wallet is called a purse. Wallets are usually what blokes use. I’d never thought about sorting out my purse before. That’s a great idea. Sometimes I have loads of receipts in my purse & never throw them away. In the UK loads of the shops do advantage cards. Tesco & Boots are especially great cards & it’s amazing how quickly the points go up.

You may benefit from a purse organizer insert. I found one at BB&B one year which can be easily moved from one purse to another. It is basically shaped like a stiff drawstring bag. It holds gift cards, pens, sunglasses, etc in the pockets and the inside holds wallet, etc. It also serves as a 'divider' and pockets items on either side of it. It helps to organize my items so I can find them quicker. For my many punch cards or hotel rewards cards, etc, I have used a hole punch and then threaded them onto a binder ring and popped them into the purse. They are easy to spot in a bunch like that, and easy enough to flip to the correct card to use.

I purposefully only carry a wristlet so that clutter can't accumulate! I keep a small bag in my car with a couple of diapers, wipes, snacks for running errands and then I pack a diaper bag if we are doing a day trip or if my kids are going somewhere for the day. It forces me to take care of anything that otherwise might clutter up my bag/purse!

I always have at least 3 or four handbags on the go: sometimes all used in the same day! Depends on whether I'm biking or walking or going out an need something small or out shopping or I need room for my dance shoes, or, or, or. I had a look through these and then decided to donate some others which weren't making the rotation. Yay!

I have SO many bags! I have my purse, then a tote that I put that in (which contains "just in case" stuff) and then I have a bag I carry my Bible to church, a tote to carry my lunch bag, etc into work.... the list goes on. I have a Thirty-One Tote addiction. I just cleaned one out over the weekend. Onto the next one!

Love having a clean purse! I’ve been better about that this year. I’ve learned I much prefer very few or 0 pockets and using small bags to group things instead. Easier to clean and switch bags.
