Wish I had a picture for destruction of the week. My brother recently took delivery of a New Cat 335 zero swing excavator. $400K machine. A young kid that was not supposed to run it, got in to move a bedding box. ( a steel box gravel is placed in to be placed around a pipe in a trench ) . He had the box close to the cab, and then tracked over a 2 ft high dirt mound. The bedding box came off the bucket teeth, into the cab. Broke all the glass out, and bent the front “A “ pillars of the cab. That is also the ROPS. ( roll over protection structure) 34 hours on the excavator ! It’s at Cat in Grand Junction Colorado now getting a new cab. The only good news, several machines use the same cab. So availability isn’t going to as big of an issue, as first thought.
Cool stache with the 2 pack of menthol voice. Hope your doing better and did not get sicker. My daughter was on the other side of the country in college and had some work done on her jeep, when they put it together they left a few things out like a sensor and a couple bolts. Stay safe and healthy.

Thank you Badger, I feel fine actually. Hard getting a coarse voice when you have to rely on it.
100 years ago or so I struggled with a case backhoe engine that had a liner protrusion problem. Case had different fire ring sizes so I used a depth mike to figure out what was needed and ordered the parts. It was somewhat hit or miss at first until I dug deep into the books. Good news I fixed the engine and got a lot of experience r+r of the head.
You are the CAT truck guru 🧙🏻♂️
Liking the special effects on the toolbox move! That really sucks putting all that time and money into an engine just to do it all over again! Been there done that a couple times.
I remember after the rebuild on my former DDEC-4, lot's of blow-by, white smoke, and the failed bottle test, it was because the tech who reassembled the engine (not the same one who took it apart) was a low-hour fresh out of school with no supervision had installed the head gasket upside down which you can do on that engine. It was the original tech who tore it down the second time and it was he who made the discovery and the reason it became a warranty job which the shop paid 100%. On the engine you are now working on, I suspect an issue with liner protrusion or worse, a warped head since it was a short-block swap. Chances are they did not check the head for straightness before placing it on this engine. Only two things I can think of that can warp a head is overheating, or improper torquing of head bolts or torquing out of sequence. That's my two cents and I swear by it.
Looking at your shot reminds me of when I worked in R Bay at the CAT plant in Montgomery IL during summers as a temp while in law school. I hung the hydraulic tubes on the excavator and wheel loaders
Thanks for the knowledge 👍
I haven't seen any guesses on the problem. I have zero experience with heavy duty engines but my brain immediately went to a warped head followed by improper torquing of the head bolts.

On engines with cylinder liners like this one it’s critical they’re the right height after install. The liner actually sticks up a little and that’s what helps it seal. Even if the head bolts are torqued perfectly it won’t clamp the gasket like it should if they liners aren’t high enough.
KZread is really asking for it now days. Keep up the good work man

Hey Whiskers thanks for the video. Hopefully you feel better soon.
Honestly i love how you read engines. That's a true skill.
Got lucky on that one in that it did it in the shop rather than risking a bent rod or other damage trying to start it elsewhere. Had that happen on my car with a direct injected gas engine that had a stuck injector. The pressure in the gas tank while it sat literally pushed all of the fuel into the motor, and all the oil in the crankcase went into the exhaust, and needless to say, it wasn't keen on turning over when I wanted to pull it into the garage to fix it. Just a click and the lights going dim.
Ape you are the cat brain surgeon....💯 I love watchin you work 😁..truckers worst nightmare..40 grand I'm guessing
I chuckled at the def injector comment on backhoe. Just did one on our 325F for same failure

There’s so many easy money jobs out there for skilled mechanics. It just takes a little effort to find them.
Improperly torqued head bolts, that’s what I was told was wrong with my old cab over with a 5ek, 15k miles on it and blew the gasket. Got it with the rebuild already done, still can’t complain I only paid 10k for the truck and it had 440k original miles on it and it was kept in a shed used only for harvest season.
Love the mustache roll😂, and always love the information. Thank you for always going beyond what is just on the surface and showing details. Learned a lot from your videos

Hey Josh, I’m pretty good at troubleshooting those def problems. I’m at a cat dealer here in American Samoa. I think there is an updated version of the def pump now. The pump can also fail and push def in the harness all the way to the ecm. I love you videos!

@@nspro931our headquarters are in California, need I say more lol. Yeah most people do def/dpf deletes here, max speed is only 25mph so not really in danger of getting smoked with a tune. For me, def makes me a ton of money. Primarily because no one is good at diagnosing it and every day the machine is down is about a 1k loss for the company. I had an interesting one last month. No crank, no start, no comm. ended up being the def pump. I stumbled on the answer just from feeling all the relays. The def pump was hot. Swap the relay, same thing. Pull the relay completely, it starts right up. The worse part about def is you can replace the entire system, and it can still fail within a year and the customer will be pissed. But yeah if anyone ever gets stuck with a def/dpf fault on any car backhoe, hit me up.

Once I figure out the cylinder, I mark and check head bolt torque. This could be a warranty situation. That is why I like a reman long block, as if a head gasket joint failure occurs. It pushes a lot of blame on Cat as they installed the head. Of course it has to be a legal engine. Per Cat guide lines, all liners come out. All head bolts and spacer plate replaced. Flycut cracks I hate. PSI test the head and it is good, warranty won't pay unless it has failed into the coolant passage. What is your back log on cylinder heads? Longest one in our store, was ordered in August of last year. Waiting on one I ordered, (Dec of 2022) EST is March 13.
you know you're a mechanic when you twist the stache righty tighty
Your video's jus keep getting better and better ,this is exactly the problem I'm having with my boat motor,it's a volvo penta but same problem, I changed the head gasket and it lasted little over a year, but this time I know to look for clues while taking it apart again

Yes Brother Josh is one of the (Chosen Ones) Created by God to Make Sweet Love to Diesel Engine
We've had two 6NZ rebuilds lose a head gasket....the spacer between the head and block had water jacket holes not lining up ... js. We do in-house engine work so it's not the mechanics fault. Knowledge is power
Back in the seventies I worked on a 1950 Chevy pickup that had been overheated and cracked the head. It got hydro lock when we tried starting after it cooled down. I pulled the head and replaced it but noticed the piston that hydro locked didn't go all the way to the top of the cylinder. Well it turned out the rod got bent when the piston got hydro locked.
Thanks!

Those C15 6NZ engines are the best ever built. A buddy of mine had one, set at 425hp It would pull a house down, even set at 425hp Ran 2 million miles without ever having the head removed
Hopefully cat has better luck with their remans than other brands. Many of the other brands seem luck to make it out the door before problems start. Gotta wonder if the other shop cut corners on the head.

It's not CATS fault. It's the so called Tech that put it together wrong.
Very interesting. I would say improper install of sleeves but every cylinder pushing carbon on the gasket is the interesting part.
Our shop is a maccalister shop and it is packed full and it's a maze to make it through just like yours, must be a Cat thing !!
Another educational video Thanks. I wished I lived close to your shop. The nearest cat shop is over a hour away, and they don`t have a very good reputation.
this is more thrilling than a netflix series! 😱 im sure its going to need that expensive repair that those cat's need 😓...😿
The evil handlebar twist
Someone sure would be lucky to apprentice under your expertise!
One would think liner height should be good since it’s a reman block, but every other reman part is questionable these days. When I ran to Alaska there was a purple W900 up there and it was known as “The purple people eater”. 🤷♂️
Us at Warren Cat completely did away with truck shop. They don’t let us touch them anymore.
Easy! Dropped liner! We see it all the time here in New Zealand! Trucks here are loaded to 132,000lb as standard so we are twisting blocks all the time

How is Carter? I've never used them for service. I used to live in Roanoke and the only time I needed service for my truck in that area, I ended up at Truck Enterprises.
I'll take a wild guess on that Cummins destruction and say it was from a dowel pin that shook itself loose from the cover. Known problem since around 1989-2002 (I believe 2002 was the last year of that problem).
@elroyelblander6277
Жыл бұрын
The vp44's I've had apart have a smaller diameter on the gear side so the dowel pin doesn't fall out...and I believe generally the 7100 engine's have the issue because of the harmonics of the pump...but I'm sure someone out there knows more....but anyway 👍👊

Have you ever thought of a way to optimize the storage or organization of engine parts as the engine is disassembled? I end up with little boxes and tubs and stuff everywhere and the work bench area is covered with harnesses, tubes and all sorts of stuff. I have obtained a grocery store stock cart for free that I intend to cut and modify into a 24 inch wide x 36 inch long by 60 inch tall multi shelf roll around. Heavy stuff like manifolds, turbos, heads would be on the lower shelf and lighter stuff like boxes of bolts at the top. Hope to keep things more organized.

Does Cometic make gaskets for Cat and can you use them? I would think that the MLS gaskets would be better since they are multi layer steel gaskets.
At my cat dealer they go ballistic if we don’t us the cat blue plugs or the bigger red ones.
I've been there. My B model ran long enough to get me to the shop and pulled into the bay and then said that's it I'm done. It wasn't hydro locked from coolant but from another cause. With that being a Cat short block, is it still under warranty if the liner(s) have dropped? Keep up the great videos Josh!!
Two places I use silicone one is on a Cummins engine front peanut covered to the block just in the bottom two corners because the gasket loses the Rubber seal on the piece of metal down there so I put black rtv about 3in up on each side so when the gasket loses its rubber piece off the steel there's still sealant which acts as a rubber 3in on the bottom where they all leak oil so it solves that problem forever doesn't come back in the second place is I believe it's the Volvo intake gasket I put it in four spots because the O-ring seal does not stay on the intake unless you try to glue it or something so I found that in four spots if you put our TV and you let it dry it holds in place so you can actually Mount the intake to the Head other than that do not use RTV on Rubber seal it doesn't do anything although I did use a thin layer on a C15 between the front seal in the peanut cover cuz the peanut cover with slightly out of round and that fix the oil leak after three seals in it found out it wasn't the seal that was leaking it was from the seal to the peanut cover and since the engine already has a million miles on it we decided we would try to put a little caulk on the outside of the seal to seal it to the peanut cover and hope that fixes it until we do a full rebuild on it's been nine months has a week to drop a oil
Does not look like during the "rebuild" for this engine, they managed to put a new head gasket on. Gasket looked like it got a lot of miles on it.
What model is your lord impact wrench used to take off the head bolts?
My opinion. Whether it's automotive, AG, construction. Yellow, red, black or blue. Factory short blocks or remans are always a huge red flag No-No in my book. They're outsourcing assembled to the cheapest labor possible.
Surprised to see fiber head gasket would have thought it would be stainless steel shims type, that's more like the type my old ford would have.
Some of those head bolts came out way easy…..
