and worse when he's speaking to a bunch of brazilians after living in Brazil for a while and uses the english version of an expression who is charged with racism on the brazilian culture , by a brazilian point of view very few things could've been worse than that expression (we don't have the n-word or equivalents in portuguese, though the internet racists are doing their best to change that, and we have fewer slurs on general thanks to a different historical background, what may explain the party slow reaction to the characther saying that on the battle but we do have huge derrogatory expressions and he used one even if in english, a racial charge because the n-word would unfortunally be a difficult win but with that sentence he could even be arrested, like for the party perspective he was being more racist because cultural infleunce and depending of the quantity of time he lhad lived here he should've known that especially as a teacher)

Here in Brazil we don't care about slurs, insults, names, etc, when among friends, we would use any nonsense word to describe a friend, but We do care about the meaning of those words when said by an outsider of the group. That 'vet' (i dont actually think he is one) would be beaten on the street if he talked like that in public in some regions. Also, our equivalent of your N word, if we have ever had one, is our translation of 'black', the dude fucked up every chance. Black people in brazil are usually called negro/negra, which literally means the N word, but it's ok. If you do something at a table and get instant feedback from the players around you that they don't like it, think of another thing your character might do in that situation and run take two. You're so uncreative, you honestly can only think of one valid reaction someone would have to an event?? Jesus, man. Maybe I'm just neurotic, but IRL, I usually think of thirty different things I can do in a situation before I pick my tack and dive in. Also, don't roll up a character who's an asshole. I loved the idea of them becoming a band. What's wrong with that? that's one hell of an awesome way to earn some cash as a downtime activity, they could even separate their adventurer identities and their band member identities to trick their way into either seeming harmless so town guards would be less suspicious, or even talk their way into enemy encampments, saying they'll perform a show for just one night under the camp's protection, there's tons of possibilities with this.

So, where my husband gets his blood drawn (yay chronic medical stuff,) one of the doctors is Haitian, IIRC, and probably has the darkest skin-tone I've ever seen IRL. Absolutely great guy, and turns out to love MMO's and RPGs. Around Halloween, folks were getting ideas for fantasy costumes together. HE WAS THE ONE WHO SAID, "Hey, shouldn't I be a *dark* elf? Because, y'know...!" and gestures all over himself. We all have a hearty chuckle. THAT IS WHEN A COMMENT LIKE THAT IS OKAY. THAT IS LITERALLY THE ONLY TIME A COMMENT LIKE THAT IS OKAY!!!

Exactly, its ok to make a character reflect a trait of oneself, but not to force a character on someoneone because of a trait they have, especially if you have zero idea of history - which this "roomie" guy obviously had.

Many times have I heard that violence shouldn’t be used at the table, but if you sit down at a table, look a black man in the eye, and then say the N-word TO HIS FACE, well… Sorry to say, but you deserve everything that’s about to come to you. Honestly very satisfying to hear Roomie cried after getting punched in the face when dropping casual racism. I bet anything that he didn’t know why he got punched in the face or why all his friends started walking out on him.

As a latinoamerican myself, I can confirm that while the n-word (and racism in general) isn't nearly as big a deal around here, we do know the implications when someone from the U.S says it ._. and would still find it offensive, since we know the person saying it KNOWS what they're trying to say with that word >_>

I get that. I always find intent more important than specific words used (though of course, the words used can be a good indicator of intent). For instance, I knew an older person who used the 'd' slur for a lesbian in public, not knowing it was a slur because it was just the normal term back in her day. It certainly wasn't intentional, she is very progressive for her age, so she was both surprised and sorry when I cleared her up on the word. Nobody present was offended because both her nature and her reaction to finding out showed there was zero malice behind it, just ignorance. If anything, there was relief that she found out there and then rather than in more... Delicate settings. The person in the story has no excuse however, they know what they're doing, as would someone from the US where you're at. They're being malicious, and that shit just won't fly.

@@GooglyGook12 It is simply impossible to *not* be racist in this world. Humans are visual people and treating someone _"the same"_ as others _"even though"_ visibility says otherwise, still does not mean people do not _"see race"._ In fact this video proved it once more. Calling someone a Ni°°er is _worse_ when people *know/see* that the target person is black. But is less offensive if the verbalizer is also a black person. And when white people call each other that thing, it is seen only as silly, or wierd or whatever, regarding of the circle. So yeah, all are still racists. But now they have become complacent in their racism. Since they have changed their attitude to it. But it is still there. Simple as that.

I’m running RotFM that had a ranger starting out. The session 0 was crucial for this campaign as I laid out that this adventure is meant to be spooky with heavy survival elements when in the tundra. I talked with the ranger about goodberry and we both came up with several tweaks to the spell to change it into a stop-gap in case things were really rough. Then we presented the tweaks to the rest of the party and had a vote. They voted for the tweaks to keep the spirit of the adventure. That being said, the tone up until the tpk was basically Scooby Doo with more dire consequences which was so much fun. The comedy helped by alleviating some tension and made the very spooky bits all the more spooky.
