As someone who uses dkl pretty often, I think it’s great honestly. It feels about as grippy as regular griptape

Bruh, I skate dkl and personally have no problem with the way it grips and flicks. If you're open to it, then give it a try and you'll probably like it. Most people I let try my board like it. And then there's those people that hate it before they even try it, and they always got some messed up thing to say while they half commit to a trick. I'm still skating the same pair of shoes for over a year now and never going back

I skated DKL for almost a year and it definitely saved my shoes. But I found after a couple sessions it would lose grip, despite wiping it down every few tries. I'd been struggling with slappy crooks and the first time I set up a board with regular grip I got them, haven't gone back to DKL since. It served it's purpose for me, relearning flip tricks, but it's too much hassle to keep it grippy enough to really skate. If it works for you, more power to ya, you're saving more $$$ than me! Try out some regular grip again sometime though, you might be surprised. 👊

I have fully switch to DKL for almost 6 months now after skating regular grip for about 4 years and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to regular grip, I love it! It only took two or three sessions to feel normal. Also I have no problem with my 180 or 360 flip tricks, I think it just takes time to get used to.

I've been skating this for the past year and so far I love it a lot. I think your friend either wore shoes with very little tread left in them, or the board was very dirty. Those are really the only two instances where it can feel like ice. Otherwise it feels identical to regular griptape. I usually wipe my board off with a damp rag before every session and that usually keeps it grippy to last. If its extra dusty or I notice it losing grip, I'll just take my hand and do a quick wipe off and that usually works for a quick fix. The grip does wear down eventually, but I find that I need a new board by the time that happens anyway, so I don't find that a big deal. I think the griptape is amazing for beginners who are constantly trying to learn flip tricks, and people who don't really like having to buy new shoes every couple weeks. Just for reference, I've been skating my new pair of vans for about a month now and the bumps on the rubber aren't worn down yet. In comparison, my friend who skates normal griptape just bought some new vans, and they are already worn through the black line around toecap.

As someone who has tried this before I can say that while it does work fine the biggest weakness was it was a dust magnet which makes it very slippery and requires constant cleaning

Yup, windy days at the skatepark were unskateable with DKL. Wiping my board down and then waiting for it to fully dry off every couple tries got frustrating. It was great to help dial in fliptricks without churning through shoes though.

BUT at least its easy to clean.. and I assume you say "constant" meaning once every other day or two? Small price to pay for shoes that last, imo

@@skateboardingzen1793 No, I would bring a damp rag to the skatepark and every couple tries at something I had to wipe it down cause my shoes would slip. It just depended on the day and how dusty the park was.

I just switched over on all 4 of my boards, and will never go back. It's perfect for me.

Nice vid, thanks! the best feature of this kind of griptape - it saves your shoes! Im using different non abrasive grip (not dkl, cheaper version) to learn flip tricks. Ive started doing so, after ive destroyed new pair of shoes in one day learning kickflips )) but it only works than clean and totally dry, so im using normal grip for my transition board.

Been curious to try it out, my current deck had been pre-taped with a super abrasive tape and one kickflilp attempt just sent the board flying forward (primarily my fault mostly, I never did get good enough to do any flip tricks). My old board when I was a kid had a really fine thin grip tape that was awesome (reminded me of 130 grit sand paper) you could easily adjust foot placement but still stayed planted on it just fine. I never really did learn much about tape though, I think I'm gonna look into it in a couple months once my deck is spent

i used it since october 2020 to may 2022. Absolutely love almost everything about it. Saved tons of money on shoes (2 pairs for the whole time and it's just because i was using the first pair for both skateboarding and day to day use and because of that the sole wore out) but it's a terrible pain in the ass in summer or if the area that you skate in is dusty. This griptape, for all it's greatness, is a dust magnet and once it's dusty it is very slippery. Now i use regular griptape for a couple of months (summer) and then i will switch again to dkl when autumn arrives

I tried this summer non abrasive grip tape by SYS-grip. I do a lot of kickflips and ruin my shoes usually in three weeks. I gave it a try. I got used to non abrasive grip tape, but unfortunately after two weeks there was no grip anymore and flips were not working anymore. I had to switch back to regular grip tape. As a summary my shoes lasted longer, but non abrasive grip tape was working only for short time. I am sure it works well for those who do not do very technical flip tricks. In my opinion skate shoe companies should provide some spare parts in order to maintain shoes. But that’s probably not in their interest to loose profits.😅 I fix shoes by cutting some parts from old shoes and glue them to give extra life to my current shoes.

I rode DKL for almost a year as I was getting back into skating at the beginning of the pandemic. For me, it was hugely beneficial to not wreck my shoes as I was relearning my flip tricks. I have moved on from it since then however. It does get slippery with dust, and like ice if it gets wet. After a week or two of wear, I would have to wipe the dust off every few tries. It served it's purpose and definitely saved me some cash, but if you're in a humid or dusty environment it gets slippery quickly.

I noticed the bloke doing the flip tricks didn't try the non abrasive grip with shoes that hadn't been skated in which the DKL dudes say is key for getting a good flick on flip tricks. Cheers for the vid

You're the first person ive seen set this stuff up the right way.

I think its really important to wear shoes that aren't already worn down by sandpaper to get the best out of dkl grip. I've been using it for about a year, works great for me. I haven't learned any flip tricks beyond kickflip/heelflip, so I can't comment on 180 flip tricks. But I've been skating the same shoes for a whole year and they look great! What's not to love?

For sure new shoes are key. Start with a fresh pair on fresh DKL and you're good for awhile. I skated it for almost a year as I relearned my basic flip tricks, well worth it imo. It does get slippery over time though, try out some regular grip again. It made a huge difference in my progression, I hadn't realized how much I was slipping off with DKL until I switched back. It has its place, but at a certain point I realized it was holding me back.

@@taylorschultz53 I'm planning on trying regular grip again at some point, DKL does wear down after a while, but I go through boards kind of fast, so for me the grip is usually good enough until I get a new board. Just trying to enjoy these Etnies that still look great after a year before I rip them up lol. While this grip surely isn't perfect, it can help people save a lot of money on shoes.

Idk if you’re using a different camera, but one of the microphones sounds distorted, like as if it’s come in contact with water or something. I can notice it with the sounds of the board on the ground, but even more so when you’re talking to the camera.

You can clean regular grip tape, you just don't use water. Use a belt sander cleaner.

but how is it with dust? even normal grip tape has a rough time with to much dust. so could imagine rubber to be super slippery when dusty?

Guys, if you want even better grip, try skating non-abrasive grip tape with Crocs. (On your own risk)

You can't honestly expect to use torn up shoes with no grip, on a rubber grip tape. Its not a gimmic, its common sense. If you're going to spend 60-80+ on a pair of shoes every two weeks, what's the beef with saving one pair for that grip tape? Thats the point of this brand, is so you don't have to burn through shoes. Shoes were the most expensive part of skating. Im not the type of person to keep flicking till my toes are bleeding, then uses shoe goo until the shoe is 50% silicone. This brand is incredible, just like FP insoles, they're in it for the good of the game, not just monetary gains.

But let’s be honest, most of the time you’re changing your board before shoes. I back what the brand is trying to do for sure! However my experience even with new shoes, doesn’t give me the same board control as I get with sandpaper grit.

@@ZackDowdy Well I think both my boards and my shoes last around 1 month of full skate. Even If I'd skate 2 boards a month for 15€ per grip (France) It would cost me 30€ a month and I wouldn't have the need to buy shoes for a year if I didn't want to. So it would be 30€ vs at least 50€ of shoes. Since I'm using only 1 board a month it's 15€ vs at least 50€. Having the luxury to replace my board with a fresh one instead of having to choose if I replace shoes or deck is a good perspective tho. And fresh board I think as a greater influence on your skate feeling. So it is on economic perspective a win all time for this grip. Furthermore I like the fact it is slightly more ecological. I think the environemental cost of a rubber griptape is way inferior than the cost of a shoe production. I have ordered some. I'l try it out. And see. The things that got me concerned is about the dust problem. I hope it's is not to much of a constraint. (I feel btw that it was why the grip was slippery on the flip, I've heard the overall grip has gone better with new gen and tech evolution, so maybe try it out again 2 years later to check if any improvement)

I like the idea of not ruining shoes but the flick part would annoy me I think

I’ve gone gou Miyagi style and glued fabric down instead of Grip tape do that for a couple of set ups and you’ll get over it real quick.

I think flip tricks and 180’s are whack on the video because it says it grips a lot better with new shoes, so I wouldn’t take that it’s useless for those tricks

"If your product depends on another product, what is it really doing?" Saving a ton of money...not everyone makes money from content or is a pro. Most kids don't make enough money to be able to buy shoes constantly. Buying one pair of shoes for years vs buying a bunch of decks, shoes, laces, tape add up. Shoes are arguably the most expensive part, especially for people learning flip tricks. One pair of shoes and grip for $90 annually(if you even need a new pair) vs $300 for more pairs of shoes every year is a huge difference. The price only goes up if you're strictly learning flip tricks.

Not a good test tbh, you're supposed to use non abrasive grip with straight up brand new shoes because that's what it's designed for. So the dude who blamed the grip for not landing his front side flip should have work new shoes for a 100 percent accurate test

To me, grip tape is part of the physical expression of " skate and destroy ".

Hell no, I'm not a tech guy, I can't barely flip cause I didn't practice that (it wasn't something I was to into) But I still ripped 1 shoes and 1 board a month. The sole inside and outside dies lighting fast.

Tried it for about half a year or more. Still have a sheet left. Would try again for sure. But it does have it’s problems. Shoe survival for ages and ages is the best benefit. Skating shoes that look fresh is not to be underestimated. Ease of readjusting foot position is excellent too. However it isn’t as grippy, especially not when it gets dusty and if you get it wet (sweat) you’ll be amazed by how little it takes for it to become really slippery.

Yup, I skated it for almost a year. Helped me relearn my flip tricks without churning through shoes. But the dust and sweat slip factor got to be too annoying, after the first session on a new sheet I'd be wiping my board down between every try.

Having to wipe it down all the time, the griptape wearing out, and the griptape peeling and just not looking very good. It's nice to help you practice flip tricks and stuff for sure, but like I don't know, part of me wants to go back just because that's the standard.
