The X2 - Uncompromised high-end design
The X2 is made for those who take great joy in the fine details, the build-quality, the high-grade materials, and even more audio performance. Structurally, the X2 is supported by its large, heavy, dense and stiff MDF structure, reducing unwanted resonances to almost imperceptible levels.
By adding this extra mass, the X2 is even quieter, allowing the vinyl reproduction to become more detailed and precise. Inside, it houses a sophisticated DC/AC generator board which, combined with the convenient speed control board, delivers clean and stable power to the silent motor system. To get the best performance out of it, we have improved the motor suspension. Remaining vibrations are damped and eliminated, so they are not transmitted onto the chassis, platter, and cartridge.
The X2‘s motor chassis is carefully balanced and suspended on a precision-tuned TPE belt; this way the motor chassis is effectively decoupled from the main plinth for optimal performance. It is free-floating, horizontally completely level and able to operate at the highest performance levels.
In the X2, the motor drives a new, heavy, non-resonant Acryl platter via a sub-platter drive system and a premium grade main bearing for liquid-smooth rotation. The new 9” carbon/aluminum sandwich construction tonearm results in better internal damping. This also means, the entire tonearm bearing is upgraded to compensate for the extra mass; altogether tracking will be more precise, stable and accurate. The increased mass makes the tonearm an excellent fit for low compliance MC cartridges. Finished as a one-piece, with no resonance-inducing headshell, the X2 can also be set for azimuth and VTA adjustment. The TPE damped counterweight reduces arm-cartridge resonances by as much as 50%
Supplied either with or without a premium Pick it 2M-Silver cartridge it can be ready to play within a few minutes of unboxing. Also supplied in the box is our Connect-IT E RCA cables, a semi-balanced, low-capacitance cable with superior shielding that’s optimized for turntable use.
Lastly, height-adjustable feet in their Alu/ TPE sandwich construction are a very exclusive but necessary feature to level the turntable and effectively isolate it from the surface it is placed on.

Follow up: 3 months after my purchase and I have to say that I love this turntable. What you get for the money is truly unreal! Mine originally came with the Ortofon Silver, which sounded good. I swapped out the stylus to the Ortofon Blue, which took all of 15 seconds. What a difference! I also purchased the clamp simply to flatten some slightly warped records. I didn't expect any sound differences with the clamp, but I have to say, there seems to be an incremental improvement in the sound, and certainly the slightly warped records are more snug to the platter. That clamp is certainly worth it in my opinion. Anyway, this turntable is awesome. There are a lot of great 'tables out on the market now. We are living in somewhat of a golden era of turntables. The X series are incredible for the money.

Motor hum is being transmitted on my X2 when needle contacts the vinyl. Found a recommendation to remove a "foam ring" that is under the motor. So I unhooked the rubber support that holds the motor from the top and looked and sure enough there is a foam ring under there. The motor just barely contacts it. Removed it, hum went away but the motor now (since it has no support from the bottom) is slightly cocked due to the tension of the belt. Wondering what the long term effect of leaving this out might be. The motor definitely is not TRUELY free floating unless the foam ring is removed.

Wait... so he's saying that using a record weight is not recommended on the debut carbon and X models because the added weight on the bearings would cause rumbling? So then why come out with an aluminum sub platter upgrade for the debut models? This doesn't make any sense to me.

If it is better to use the clamp also on the X1 then I‘m not sure if I should switch/upgrade to the Aluminium sub-platter. Doesn‘t it have more mass as well (and thus might be too heavy for the bearings)?

Unfortunately, the X2 is now $1499 in the U.S. Not very competitive for a table that is giving users problems with rumble (it measured poorly for noise in Paul Miller's HiFi Choice measurements). X1 has gone to $999, but still seems to be the sweeter spot in the line. A shame- I was hoping these tables would be home runs. (Still hoping the Debut Carbon Evo will be that in its price range.)

It's a toss-up between the X2 in white and the Classic EVO in eucalyptus for me. I just wish the X2 had the same buttons as the X1. The ones on the X2 look dated to me. Not a deal breaker but my choice would be an easier one to make if they were. Thanks for posting this!

I am in the same boat! It's the X2 in walnut or the Classic in walnut. I go back and forth on the looks, though leaning towards the X2. My wife likes the X2 way more. I have this feeling that the Classic might sound a little better because of the damping, but how much? One thing for sure is that when my wife is happy, life is a lot easier and she will be much more happy for me to spend time (and money on cartridge upgrades) listening to music. I don't think you can go wrong with either, though the Classic in eucalyptus looks dynamite! Having said that, the X2 has white buttons which give it a real streamlined look. Decisions! Stay safe.

@@bareknuckles2u First world problems right? Haha! My problem is that I like that white with black buttons look. If I could only have the sleeker, newer look of the buttons from the X1 on the X2... Again, a minor quibble. While I wait to make up my mind, I'm also thinking about this one in Walnut. www.project-audio.com/en/product/xtension-9-s-shape/ Of course, this is a little over twice the amount the X2 costs. It would be an end game table for me. It would have to last for the rest of my life. I like that I could eventually swap out cartridges easily enough. But, I'm pretty sure that the X2 and The Classic Evo are in the cards for me right now. I will decide once quarantine is over. Stay safe as well. Good Luck!

@@elmhurst86 Wow, I was thinking along the same lines with the Xtension 9 (or 10, but that thing is huge!) being my last TT. Those are amazing. I never really noticed the S shape version of the 9 until you provided the link. What a classic design! There is a store where I live that used to have "Vinyl Fridays" once a month. Customers could take 5 albums in to get cleaned for free, have a coupe of beers and listen to some tracks on the big system with high-end Wilsons. The TT was the Xtension 10. One week they used a Linn alongside the 10...both sounded great. Yes, we are lucky to be deliberating about things like this (1st world problems). But we also should also acknowledge that this is important to us. My usual rule of thumb for luxury purchases under $3000 (or so) is get what you really want. That reduces the likelihood of making two purchases! But now I have to wait and see what the pandemic will mean to my financial situation over the next while. If the X2 is as far as I can justifiably go, I will be happy with it. If not, then possibly the Xtension 9. Good luck with your purchase and your health.

What Pro-Ject doesn't get about the American market is: Americans love to needle-drop. We like a tonearm with a raised, hooked fingerlift so that we can accurately and safely put the stylus in the selected groove, without the cueing lever. Rega and other makers design this type fingerlift into their one-piece arms. Pro-Ject just leaves the customer a dubious stub, riding too close to the record surface for hand cueing.

@@eharmicar Just because you do not like LPs does not mean those who do are wrong. Just because you do not want to go through the effort to maintain them does not mean that others do not take pleasure in doing so. And that is not wrong either. Your comment on 3rd order distortion paints a pretty incomplete picture and is honestly misleading. I am no neophyte and I know several people older than you who understand things clearly much better than you do. Take Richard Vandersteen for example. When I heard his flag ship speakers at two different RMAF shows he played vinyl the entire time. Sounded incredible. Same with the Joseph Audio room. Same with the VAC room. I also have a great digital rig and I can tell you that some recordings always sound better on the older technology when the older technology is setup correctly by someone who is not lazy and cares. Nothing wrong with wanting it easy and convenient either. We all have to prioritize in the way that suits us best.
