Scott. Excellent comments. I am totally agree with you. I have two turntables, one of the better turntables you can enjoy, a vintage Dual CS 721 with the extraordinary AT 120Sla Cartridge; however, I bought a Pro-Ject x1 with the special cartridge that Ortofon designed for this turntable. I never thought that I was going to be so impressed by the X1, but it sounds fantastic and better than my Dual. This turntable is very special, in my case I’m not going to upgrade anything, because it sounds absolutely fantastic. I use it with a Pro-Ject phono box S2, a DENON AVR-X6500H, an Emotiva UPA 700, and Emotiva T2 Speakers.

Thanks for the honesty Scott. A lot of us just get dragged into upgrading "kit" just because of the dreaded hypnotic marketing machine companies use across the world. it works because we are human. Good to see a good'ol grass roots, warts and all, review!!

I think the best advice I have been given is the most important component is your room 😉...agreed it is about system matching for one's own room. I just ordered the X1B and was great to see you had such a positive experience with this line. Having a balanced out option will be a fun / affordable way to explore mc carts and future amp / pre options (love my mf m5si, but no xlr) to support that next step.

I would like to hear your opinion on the new true balanced B models. Many improvements were made and I think the X2b is a completely overhauled system, now equipped with MC which should generally improve the sound quality.

Hello . You might be thinking about this incorrectly . Many Turntables can accommodate moving coil or magnet cartridges . Has nothing to do with true balance . Your phono stage / pre amp dictates what cartridge you can use . I don’t have much to say about the true balanced versions of the X because I haven’t heard them in person but pro ject is now marketing even new external phono stages with balanced connections . It’s marketing for sure and maybe quieter but it all depends on all the connections in your system chain and ends up costing you money going down a rabbit hole so who knows . More choices for sure . Enjoy the music and Peace

@@fctryoffetsh39 All good tables .. I think its just personal preference and budget at this point. If you are looking to spend about a grand the X1 is a great value and very simple functionality, less stuff to go wrong after years of use. Just solid and pure. It all depends on what you like. Unfortunately it use to be an even better. I got mine for $800 in 2020. Sad

@@fctryoffetsh39 I watched this as I want a second turntable to use a dedicated mono cartridge to play my old 1960’s records that I have started collecting. The Rega over here in the UK has a lifetime warranty and sounds superb so it’s the one that I will probably get but the various Audio Technica turntables are very tempting due to their replaceable head shells and the price is much lower. Tough choice but something for me to investigate and ponder.

Excellent review and advice and I had been pondering about the X2 for a while - I have the X1 for nearly two years and I really find it works perfectly for my listening enjoyment - its still on the stock PickIt cartridge and I just cant fault it - I might treat it to an Ortofon 2M Blue and I dont think thats too extravagant ..I have a class A Sugden A21 amp and a set of Lintons and whilst the Sugden has an inbuilt Phono Preamp and it does a mighty fine job - I might invest in an external preamp -- but thats a little down the road. The X1 is great value at the price point - well constructed and simple - and I would rate it hight then the Rega P3 - Greetings from Ireland - Paul

Hello, I own an X1 as well. The nice thing about it is also the posaible upgrade-path. I added an external phono preamp, the metall sub-platter and lately an Ortofon Black and a linear Power supply. To be honest, I cannot really hear the difference regarding sub-platter or power supply. The pre-anp and the new cartridge significally improved the sound

Hi! Can you please tell me if there's a difference between pro-ject debut Evo($599)... debut Pro($999) and the X1(now on sale...around $1000). Should i get the pro or x1 with a basic cartridge or I would rather get the Evo and spend the extra cash on the MC cartridge. My current system is Audio-Technica LP120XUSB with Nagaoka MP-110h cartridge, ifi zen phono preamp, Rotel RA-1570 amplifier, Bowers and Wilkins 603 speakers. It sounds good ....but I have a feeling that I can improve the sound...the dynamics...the sound stage. Thank you!

If the x1 is on sale I’d choose that without a doubt . Soon they will be selling the x1b which is the true balanced version but the standard x1 is a sweet spot. I’d also recommend having it set up and checked out by whom ever you buy from . Should be included in price

I have the X2 (which I personally love). Not getting into the X1 vs X2 talk b/c I don't have an X1. I suspect each table can be setup to sound great. That said - my comment is about the 'true balanced' marketing of the X1B/X2B. It is my understanding that the wiring of an X1 is identical to the X1B internally. The only difference is they prewired a 5pin connection. In other words - you can acheive the same balanced signal if you use an MC cartridge (which is required for balanced in either case) as long as you buy/make the right cable. This is from Pro-ject's support line themselves (and yes, they make this cable as well - $200 which is steep - but it's turn-key).

The key word here is marketing. It's a rabbit hole. The most expensive turntables in the world still use RCA connectors so go figure. The X1 and X2 are both excellent turntables and the new B true balanced tech is just old tech cleverly repurposed to get quieter delivery from your analogue source. Is this worth buying the right 'expensive cables' that makes this apparent, to negotiate the benefits of spending more on the B which is (as you said and I agree) just a version with the extra option for the XLR cable. It's all personal taste. If you want pure quiet , listen to CDs. One of the charms of analogue to my ears is the air, the physical noise of records that even with a perfect balanced set up is going to produce. So really with a balanced connection, you will just hear the crackle of your records all the more pristinely (if that's a word). If your X2 gives you goosebumps (as mine does), stick with it.

But the technics sound fantastic I use a denon dl 103r and the technics has the auto return but finally broke. If I found another in a mint condition I’ll get it back. I also got the pro ject debut pro and it also great I paired with the my denon cart and I was really impress since the denon is not a friendly cart.

Something went wrong here setup wise. Having heard most Prject decks thru Debut Pro to Signature 10 i can safely say the X2 beats the X1 to my ears. Its more of everything the X1 does well imo. That being said the X2B is close to the Classic Evo in price and i prefer the Classic Evo for its bouncier sound
