The X1 - Pro-Ject‘s classic turntable design reimagined!
The X1 is based on the same concept as the P1, but improved in every aspect thanks to modern materials and new production methods. Inside it houses a sophisticated DC/AC generator board which, combined with the convenient speed control board, delivers clean and stable power to the quiet-running motor. For even further improved performance, the motor is decoupled from the main plinth using a new motor suspension system. In the X1, the motor drives a new, heavy, non-resonant Acryl platter via a sub-platter drive system and a premium grade main bearing for liquid-smooth rotation.
The X1 is also better than its predecessors, thanks to the super-stiff, perfectly tempered Carbon/Alu sandwich construction tonearm. This new 8.6” tonearm design is incredibly light and stiff, with improved resistance to external interference. Finished as a one-piece, with no resonance-inducing headshell, the X1 can also be set for azimuth and VTA adjustment. The tonearm is then supplied with a TPE-damped counterweight, further reducing cartridge-tonearm resonances.
Supplied either with or without a brand new Pro-Ject Pick it S2 MM cartridge, manufactured by the cartridge experts at Ortofon but voiced by the design team at Pro-Ject, it can be ready to play within a few minutes of unboxing. Also supplied in the box is our Connect-IT E RCA cables, a semi-balanced, low-capacitance cable with superior shielding that’s optimized for turntable use. Lastly, height-adjustable feet in their Alu/ TPE sandwich construction are a very exclusive but necessary feature to level up the turntable and effectively isolate it from the surface it is placed on. The X1‘s 8 layers of painting and the hand-polished finish guarantee its luxury appearance.

It is great to see this demonstration from Heinz. How lucky for you to have him visit. I have an original project 1. I am getting great sound from it and I appreciate it even more now after watching this video. I have aligned it so well, that I can't bear to undo all that good work to upgrade the cartridge. I am close to selling it as a complete ready to go package for someone else to appreciate and upgrade to the X1 with a new cartridge. That is how I got here. Wondering what would be an upgrade turntable. Thanks for the video! I will make sure to go to you to buy.

Fun fact: the much appraised Pro-ject One is essentially a re-badged 1987 Czechoslovak Tesla NC 500. All what Mr. Lichtenegger changed on it, was a bit better tonearm internal wiring and the signal cable with RCA plugs instead of DIN plug. There were other changes that were on the opposite side: the finish was reduced to black paint instead of black and pale veneer, and the edges of the tonearm gimbal were no longer brushed to the metal - you can tell the NC 500 from P1 just by one glimpse at the tonearm. That is all, all the parts are the same and interchangeable. Tesla NC 500 a.k.a Pro-ject P1 in action, note the brushed edges of the gimbal: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qp6nts2RhcbMn8Y.html

I'm about to get a new turntable.. The Debut carbon EVO is on my list, but i'm not sure if the X1 would be the better choice and if its really worth the extra money (especially since i like the look of the debut evo quite a lot more)

If you prefer the look of the Evo I would recommend upgrading the plate to the Acryllic version and I would also recommend swapping out the 2M red for the 2M blue. It won't bring you quite up to the level of the X1 but it will be close and you will still get to enjoy the aesthetic of the new Evo unit.

@@living_entertainment seems like a good idea, thanks. Tho I'm not sure about the acrylic platter since it is 400 grams lighter than the steelplatter of the evo so it might decrease speed stability!? Could get an x1 for just a 100 euros more than the evo (its a returned model) which seems kinda like a steal.. If it just wouldn't be in high gloss finish 😅

Any advice would be appreciated - I’m about to buy a new turntable, upgrading from entry level audio Technica one as I think I’m ready to move on. My budget is in the region of £700 and I’m torn between the Rega planar 3 and the pro ject x1 - it seems that the x1 is very well made and I can’t really go wrong with it, but some reviews have said the sound is more detailed from the planar 3 so I’m completely torn

JeromeMF I ended up going with the x1 as I wanted to buy from richer sounds and they only stocked the x1, it came with a free 6 year guarantee and the guy on the phone was very knowledgeable about it. The turntable looks fantastic, absolutely no complaints about it’s appearance or functionality. Sound quality is incredible compared to what I had before, the bass that it picks up from the record is immense, and the sound is very detailed and collected. Only complaint would be that you do have to get it setup quite precisely, as in adjusting the azimuth and tracking angle to get the best sound out of it. If you set it up properly and pair it with a good system you can’t go wrong. Best of luck

@@living_entertainment I've searched every online seller I could find on the internet here in the USA, and not one I've found sells the Pro-ject X1-X2 metal sub platter as an upgrade for these two models. It seems to be a logical thing to have in their inventory just like cartridges, standard platters, and belts. Some have metal sub platters for two other models, but none for the X1-X2. I'll keep looking. I hope a USA seller has one, and reads this. If they do please reply.

Buy it without the stock "Pick it S2" This is the most hatefull cartridge you will ever encounter. No matter how much down force weight you apply you can not get rid of the terrible sibilance, cart position, ride hight and azimuth were also checked all okay various vinyl tested new & old. There is NO way this cart is the one used on any of the reviews because it is absolute shit and does not bring out anything good from the deck at all and I am sure the reviewers would have told Pro-ject to go back to the drawing board if presented with that kind of nastiness. I removed it after talking to Henly Audio (UK Distributer) and replaced it with the Goldring 1006 which I am glad to say sounds fantastic playing at 1.5g and does bring all the fabtastic things writen about the deck to the ears. In conclusion I must have a faulty Pick it S2 cart or people like the sound of Sibilance?

  • @PhonoDirect

Pick It S2 is just a 2M Red needle with a DJ grade generator. While original 2M Red gives around 5 mV of output, the S2 gives 7mV, which is way too much for most of the phonostages, especially phono inputs in vintage gear, which were rated for around 2-3mV. So, the sibilance is most probably the result of an overdriven distorted phonostage. I honestly don't understand why they created this piece of crap.

I don't understand why the X2 and the new Debut Carbon Pro come in satin black but not the X1?!?! They both come in white, gloss black and walnut. Would it have been too difficult to add the satin black to the X1 line as well?! Utterly ridiculous. What is Pro-Ject thinking?!
