Pritam Singh rejects criticisms that WP has no serious policies or advances populist ideas

The Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh on Friday (Apr 21) responded to comments made by Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong that the opposition should provide concrete alternatives to raise revenue and not ideas that chip away at trust in the government.
"I did not expect the Deputy Prime Minister to use his speech on the President's address to attack and accuse the Worker's Party of advancing opportunistic or populist ideas to chip away bit by bit the trust in government," he said. He listed examples of proposals that his party had put forth previously, which were similar to policies later implemented by the government. READ: cna.asia/3KVxsEq
Mr Singh also cited challenges of obtaining information from the government. He said getting information on the number of intra-corporate transferees from India that worked in Singapore was like “squeezing blood from a stone”.
"The PAP must not see calls for information as a Trojan horse for ulterior motives or a red herring," he said.
Mr Singh also said he seeks an evolution of Singapore politics towards a permanent presence of elected opposition MPs so as to ensure balance in the political system against an "extraordinarily dominant PAP.

I fully agreed with Pritam Singh on foreigners who works in Singapore must pass English Speaking and in written . So far in my encounter , most of them could not read and write English is a joke to import them in working in Singapore . Second they do not displayed a true engineer quality in their work and knowledge is another joke which will eventually tarnish our reputation. Government should ensure CECA foreigners so not be allowed be be called so called 'Engineers Or Specialist; where they are actually from a low skill workers !

Leona Perera argued that blind trust in the government goes against the concept of an active citizenry, and citizens should engage in independent thinking based on facts and evidence. He proposed five recommendations to create a more open society: Delink the People’s Association from the ruling political party, allowing for a more level playing field in politics and ideas. Establish an Ombudsman with investigative capacity to ensure accountability and unbiased opinions. Make funding for civil society and arts handled by independent committees unlinked to the government. Publish all public opinion polls and data collection efforts conducted with state funds, with exceptions for commercial or national security sensitivities. Allow Opposition MPs to engage school students in their MP capacity alongside ruling party MPs and Ministers, nurturing independent, critical thinking from a young age.

For the point of --- Allow Opposition MPs to engage school students in their MP capacity alongside ruling party MPs and Ministers, nurturing independent, critical thinking from a young age. It is totally unnecessary and I laughed so hard at how desperate the opposition is for power. Absolutely desperate for power. Now, having gone through the entire Singapore education system myself starting from K2, even when I was attending K2 in pap kindergarten, no teaching of any doctrine of any kind to be loyal to PAP was present. School is just school. In national service, we were told to be loyal to Singapore. Not a word of PAP was mentioned. Even if MP appear in universities, they were only presenting the strength and weaknesses of Singapore to the students and engaging them in critical thinking. Giving them a chance to think like a leader. We saw so many videos like these. It's open and transparent. Therefore, as someone who had gone through the entire system and been a forefront witness. From my experience, I trust the education system to continue doing what it did for the past 57 years. My children told me the same for IP schools as he was in one of the IP schools. Not a word of PAP was mentioned in his first 18 years of education. Anyway, in order for students to be independent, first and foremost, no politician should appear in their schools. Once any politician from any party appears, Independence and critical thinking are immediately compromised. It is totally unintelligent for the opposition to suggest that.

The ruling party should not use parliamentary time to discredit the opposition. What both parties should do is present their options of how to solve Sg domestic problems and how to bring Sg to its future in view OG global challenges. They could cross examine each other’s proposals vigorously as no solution is perfect and they could bring about the best proposal foreword. Singaporeans are no simpletons. We can discern. We know the different global & domestic eras of our Pioneer & Merdeka generations, and the different routes and strategies SG needed to go through. Today, & near future SG faces much different global & domestic issues from the first 50 yrs of nation building. Our concerns which u hope the govt could help solve are : (1) the rising cost of living even at hawker centres & coffee shops (2) ridiculous rise in housing costs of public & private sectors without any effective controls / measures so far which are detriment to local Singaporeans and foreigners whom we need to supplement our talent & labour pool. (3) We need a total revamp of our HDB BTO, resale and rentals policies so that young couples could get their flats quickly with affordable prices. Many parents are aiding their children to pay the first 20% of their 1st HDB flats. Also retirees empty nesters should be allowed to rent out extra rooms for both short term within HDB stipulated terms & controlled prices (say minimum 5 days for bread & breakfast for budget tourists who wants to experience what’s like living like a local) & long term so as to earn recurring income and be useful. (4) make digital payments & platform more user friendly especially for Pioneer generations. At age 74 & above. (5) Healthcare cost is a great concern for Singaporeans. Govt should subsidize all medical consultations, treatments, diagnostic tests, services and medications, instead of restricting to a list of subsidized items for all Singaporeans. As for PRs maybe they could only enjoy 30% - max 50% of citizens subsidies. (6) PRs & Citizenship applications - we need them from all walks & status of employment. Our 58 yrs of History shown many came to Sg (especially from neighboring countries) and become citizens. Many started from zero became successful and they make a living for themselves, their family and contributed to Sg. They pass on these great values of Singapore to their kids who in turn take Sg to next future level.

The global politics and economy is changing from the last 50 years of PAP governance. The LKY blueprint cannot bd totally relevant for Singapore development and progress moving forward. It need to be reviewed to improve outdated policies and philosophy. The culture of woke and leftists battle with rightist group in the west are fierce and somewhat destructive to society. Our system of government cannot remain extreme in imposing socialist governance. There should be social welfarism to look after the less fortunate as the wealth gap widen and become victims of tsunami of technology sweeping the world. Many people have been left behind while foreign talents and labourer were inducted into the country economic development in huge nos. These less fortunate locals were unprepared with highly skilled talent being deprived by a system of free expression and choice to determine their own future. The current system of education of children are to steer them into various sectors of businesses determined by the government. This is a narrow approach in today’s global economy. Apart from financial assistance scheme there should be open environment, freer platforms and ample unrestrictive opportunities for local enterprise to flourish. Locals have been stifled and suppressed creating a population of people deprived of creativity, genuine resilience and resourcefulness. Much more need to revamp the system to put citizens interest first and redirect their rights. Apart from government where there role is to create opportunity while relying on people to make progress from the opportunities. Time to change fir PSO to work with the people not applying a outdated policy of being authoritarian and talking down to the people. If this persist Singapore will fail. Fissures are showing.
