GST increase by 1% cost of living would increase much more than 1%. Because hawkers and businesses would increase their sales or services by about 5%. For example a purchase or services of $1,000, prices increase of 5% would be $50 but if the actual cost of good or services is only $600 an increase in |% GST is only $6.00 increase in cost of good sold. It is very obvious that the cost of living would increase by $44.00. Should the government control profiteering?

makes no sense for govt to slap a price ceiling, if the vendors raise prices more than necessary, other competitors have an interest to keep prices low to increase market share. putting a price ceiling will only incur more loss to society.

Mr Pritam thank you for raising this very important issue. This must be not be looked at in staccato or universally, but our population in segments. If we raised up regional wars (Russia-Ukraine/Israel-Hamas), Covid-19 then we are lost. Please don't treat Singaporeans as idiots (and I don't mean you Mr Pritam), we need to find multi solutions to ease the pain, but not hand out, don't be lazy and don't look for quick fixes (and I don't mean you Mr Pritam). Instead of raising $1 to $3 why not 50 cents or 70 cents and reduce rental and other costs. There are ways to be helpful, moderate and successful but we don't need world class bullshit. We can restart co-op establishment to allow Singaporeans to purchase essentials at lower prices. The only group who has a "helicopter view" is the government and if they think its a waste of their time then they should just make it clear, so that the real Singaporeans can vote correctly i.e. vote for your team Mr Pritam. Frankly I'm tired of listening to arrogant people who are so high up there and just want to give Singaporeans a lecture on fundamentals of economy and the factors causing costs of living to increase. When I was a child wanton mee per bowl was 30 cents, today it's $4/-, mind you I'm still alive and well. If you tell me this is progress then I'm gullible to believe you at face value. LHL and his team forget the normal Singaporeans when they are millionaires and insulated from the rest of us. Singaporeans! , are you ready to restart Singapore please !

How can pap continue to say they are doing well in this 1. Electricity 2. Water 3, COE 4. Mortgage 5. Childcare costs 6. Transport fares 7. Gst increase 8. Manpower costs 9. Material costs for input. All went up. Compounded effect at least 20-30 percent baseline costs increase for a lot of people. Giving out money is not the solution. They should finance these semi gov institutions. Example would be Sp group- why are the private, with projects like district cooling in tengah- clearly sp failed in the business case planning to actually believe Sp group can be an aircon company. Why can’t they be more patient, 2023 has not ended yet. And knowing that IRAS is a govt body, i feel disgusted and disappointed for such policy. What they changed me in reality is actually interest.

They even have the audacity to enact a law to make us re-register our ICs just to collect $10/- each for a government service which are already running on our taxes. Double squeeze. Many Singaporeans are still in slumber when even a $1/- increase means at least $5.9000000/-

Any attempt to set up an independent mechanism outside the Government is doomed to failure as long as the PAP have absolute control of Parliament and the executive. It will just be wayang, quickly captured like every other institution in Singapore by LHL and his family which will ensure that the appointees are people closely connected to him.

We better have more opposition parties to work together to really care for the people of SG. I kept seeing the increase in prices everywhere even at NTUC kopitam, yet ten percent discount is not for every menu unlike the old kopitam whether it is promotional items or not. It is across the board.

I guess it’s very hard for the high n mighty salaried ministers to stay relevant to the middle & lower income especially when renting GCB @5 figure monthly while saying HDB is affordable ..

A good question but no parties could answer it as it is formulated and being done by a group of people who work under one of the Ministries . The Ministries then report their findings to the Government who endorses

Facts and figures do not lie! A strong statement.

Not sure if it’s brought up before but the cut off amount that’s taxable in personal income tax should also be raised to be in line with inflation or current standard of living. Those citizens who are considered as middle income NOW and have to pay tax in the current system would be relieved of this burden. This relieved from tax combining the assistance that the government would be more useful for newly “demoted” middle income group and the lower income group.

The PCI which measures each family income whether assistance would be given to them be it school fees or others should also be raised…again is for those newly”demoted” middle income group to lower income group. It’s made worse for the newly “demoted” middle income group because they might end up not to the lower income group but half way in between which made them not qualifying for assistance from government.

Opposition should form an Alliance Group, so no need to ask PAP for leftoversthat fall from the tables.😮

Import thousands of doctors, nurses from lost cost regions to lower medical costs. Lower ministers and civil service salaries by up to 80 percent. Cut wasteful expenditure. And so much more...

😊Nowadays it's workers party who stand with the common everyday Singaporeans by now while pap are living in an alternate reality focusing on themselves and the super rich residents they have invited into Singapore. Pap always announce and introduce price increase in Singapore. To the point that now Singaporeans who are a part of South East Asia are now paying developed European living cost without the gold European standard in life.

Elaborate how Singapore is better then. Go on. Give it a try. See how many Singaporeans can be persuaded by you then. Free education, healthcare,better food and meats than Singapore,four seasons and freehold etc. You are just brainwashed by Singapore dogmas and social conditioning that's all.

The only way to hold the Government accountable is to elect more Opposition MPs, who will not succumb to pressure and don’t go around praising the PAP, saying they should continue in power for the next 50 years and offering to keep them there should the PAP, heaven forbid, lose their majority like Pritam Singh offered to do a few years back.
