This is genius. I would never thought that the seagrass could be used as alternative of cordage material. That's aslo cool small fact that there was shown the aprox. amount of time to dry the seagrass enough to still be strong, not enough to make it less durable. Thanks for that information.

I first learned of this at a museum that had a native seagrass mat on display. Years later while combing a rocky shore I saw the surfgrass and remembered the mat I saw in the museum and I started experimenting.

Yes, making clothes is a big project because of the large amount of material needed.

Great video! I use seaweed liquid and fish emulsion in my organic gardens…. Great stuff!

I have used seaweed in compost piles before. The plants loved the soil!

A small wooden toggle would have worked well too. Seagrass smells so good too.

I know it would be a bad idea but even just watching the video I want to go swim with that Sea Lion. Probably get bit but it's so sweet looking. Maybe try and throw it the Coconut and play from a distance. My Grandpah threw a curious Dolphin a Conch shell from the boat once and it kept bringing it back for about an hour. It did the same thing as the Sea Lion, came up and kept staring at him. He threw the shell and a couple minutes later it brought it up and threw it in the boat. Then the games began until it got bored. Just another thought, where there are Sea Lions there are generally BIG sharks!

I've swam with sea lions many times. It is very rare that they attack a human. I think humans are more likely to attack another human. Like dolphin they can also be playful.

would you be able to show us a video on your pot making, more specifically the sealing process that makes them able to hold water for cooking etc! as always loving the content :)

Hi Chad, have you tried a primitive survival challenge in Hawai’i? The forests are so thick with plants (most are invasive). There are invasive giant African snails and boars which can be hunted and eaten for food. The wild chickens are not safe to eat however according to the locals. You would have to be careful of snare traps and the Amazonian centipede scolopendra but it would make an interesting challenge.

Any particular reason why you’re weaving this grass with your fingers and not rolling it over your skin how I’ve seen you do before? Great video as always!

I can roll this material into cordage on my thigh but I chose to twist it with my fingers because I can make it tighter by twisting with the fingers. This material is a little spongy. It's very different from yucca fibers which are rigid and firm. When I roll surfgrass on my thigh the end product is softer and spongier.

Did you use surfgrass or yucca to replace your broken hair tie, Chad? Love your videos!

I spend a lot of time setting up the camera for each shot and also in editing. This video was shorter so it took only about eight hours to edit and upload. Shooting the video took parts of a few days. A lot of that time is simply hiking to the locations.

How do you make sure you get the same thickness of cordage? When I add more to keep it longer, I overlap it onto the stuff I’m weaving making the cordage thicker until the other material has ran out and I’m on the new material

Any herb contains a lot of pulp and few cords. You need to stretch it like you do. Then, it is necessary to boil it in an ash solution for 1 hour. Comb out the pulp. Or put fresh yucca to rot for 2-3 weeks in a damp place . Then dry it. And tap out the pulp. Then the rope will be thin and strong. watch some videos on how to make a nettle rope.

Nettle is very different from seagrass. The techniques that apply to one plant do not necessarily apply to another.

There are soooooo many projects to do and sooooooo little time. I'm still making clay tiles for the floor. Now it's winter and too cold to make tiles so I have to wait until spring for that.

Try coating the cord with a little wax or fat when twisting, braiding and weaving. For me this greatly increased the work and durability (nettle rope)

Yes, that would definitely improve the durability but I haven't collected any wild wax yet and I want to just use the materials I find.

No real function at all. It’s just ornamental. I just wanted to show that seagrass can be used to weave into other items. I originally wanted to make a bath or mat but both those items would take many days to make. I didn’t have the time for that.

What happens if you start making your cordage while it’s still wet?
