Painted Pottery Firing Inspired by Andy Ward (s2.06)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I recently met Andy Ward and learned a lot from him about traditional pottery. He is a highly skilled potter and truly a master of the craft. He gave me some white clay and mesquite paint to practice making my own painted pottery. The mug he made for me is painted with white clay and turned out so good that I wanted to try making a bowl in a similar way. Now all that is left is to fire the bowl and see how it turns out.

    there's a technique where you'd put strands of hair/fur over the hot piece and the burned hair would create shapes and drawings on it, it looks very interesting. not sure the clay is the right material and if it gets hot enough for this to work but maybe it's worth a try.

    Just finished watching Andy's upload of the day's activities, your upload is perfectly timed. Sorry I missed the livestream (bad joke)...sometimes things simply do not work, even in the best made plans 😊 I first came across Andy's channel while looking for videos on how to purify clay. I also subscribe to Primitive Technology (the Australian guy), who inspired me to learn more simple survival skills and, in fact, brought me to this channel, among many others. Pottery looks fantastic! Today I learned that Mesquite wood burns clean, and that the beans can be used to make pottery paint prior to firing. Thank you both for the excellent uploads, they're educational and entertaining. Keep em coming!

I stopped for a few minutes the video in the beginning because of what's written on the screen and now i remember a dream i had years ago where i was listening to voices in my head telling me to put my hands in the fire and i was doing so, only then i discovered fire wasn't hurting me, it was just spreading but not burning my skin. That's a weird feeling... I'll be approaching this art shown in andy's videos and yours soon, i'm really stuck into watching those videos. Funny thing i also work in a pottery laboratory (sorry for the bad english i'm italian) and i put glazes in the ceramic, i know andy kinda hate them lol.

    I recently found your channel and I really like it. I saw how you made so many adobe bricks. Do you think about making a shovel to dig easier? With the bones you could make bone glue and attach a flat stone or a wooden board at the end of a stick.

  • @ChadZuberAdventures

    @ChadZuberAdventures

    Жыл бұрын

    In theory that sounds like a good idea but in reality the earth here is so hard that a wooden shovel just wouldn't work. I think a better idea might be a long thick pole with a hard sharp stone embedded in the end of it to drive down into the earth to break the soil.

  • @Hans_Bauer

    @Hans_Bauer

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ChadZuberAdventures Yes, that's a problem. If the ground is too hard, maybe the stone on the pole will just fall off. If the ground is hard enough, you could hammer wooden or stone wedges at the border of the clay hole to break the walls. A similar technique is used for breaking stone with steel wedges (Even soft stone with hard wood). They are called "Spaltkeil". The englisch translation is a bit difficult maybe splitting wedge.

Got a few ideas by watching your videos, i hope you don't mind if i share them.. you could make a chain with the same method you made those rings, but loop them together before you fire them. The purpose of a clay chain is questionable, but even for decoration, it would be a great experiment. The other idea i could think of, is a small cart, with clay wheels, it would help you a lot in moving rocks/ firewood.

    Brown clay which is exploding is a very good and strong clay, but in it should be added minimum 20% grog/sand, in a pots with wide walls it can be added even 50% sand, Brown clay pottery must be prehited good and enough like few hours because fat and oil on touch clays not much porous and its hard for water to drain expecialy if pots burnished. You need experience to work with it. Even if clay cointains salt pots will explode during firing to. there are tony soares tutorial how to remove salt from clay

  • @ChadZuberAdventures

    It is gray clay, not brown, that explodes when I fire it. I've used gray clay from two different sources and they both reacted exactly the same. Even with 50% grog it still exploded but not nearly as bad as the piece without grog. I don't know about salt content. That is another experiment to do.

    To be baked, clay pots should not be placed in direct fire or wood and firewood should be poured on them, you should dig a pit, put the made pottery on the edge of the pit and light the firewood at the bottom of the pit, also cover the pit so that the pottery only burns with Cook on high heat until flame. After cooking, you have to paint and glaze with natural materials and reheat

    @@AncientPottery I didn't mean to offend you Mr. Ward. I was in a rush on that typing job. When I said Native, I mean to the US area and not just Mexico and what was considered Mexican territory. While I have you, are you only the Americas or have you done European or British Pottery? I ask because i don't know and not to offend but I guess in asking there is some offense, but I am very serious in saying it's not intentionally to harm anyone.

    @@valentine_puppy No worries, there was no offense taken, I just had never heard and thought the term "Mexo-Native" was funny. I get what you mean though. Where I live here in Tucson it was part of Mexico until 1854. No I have never done any Old World pottery at all. Sometimes people suggest it for my channel but it would be hard to do very seriously without traveling over there to see some of their old pottery and there is such a rich ceramic tradition at my fingertips here in Arizona I don't lack for inspiration.

    @@AncientPottery Thank you for your kindness and for clearing up my fears that I had offended you. I am a fan of yours very much and was Very excited to see you and Chad, who I really love his channel as well. Getting a chance to meet and talk to one another. I am sure it was fun for both of you. It gets very humid and hot here in Virginia and the video on keeping your water cold in pottery was very enlightening. When I saw you and Chad. I was like oooh! Chad, he could teach you about that and you will have very cool water to drink and make booze out of. LOL. Again, thank you for the great work you do and the education. I love my country Mr. Ward.
