Price of Eggs - How to save male chicks | Made in Germany

Germans consume about ten billion eggs - and that poses an ethical problem. Modern farming methods use hens that are bred to achieve high egg yields. Male chicks are virtually worthless to the industry, and are killed immediately after hatching. But consumers in Germany are mainly concerned with keeping prices low, so there is little pressure for change.

Most eggs that I get are given too me by my mother or bought from my cousin. She sells eggs and also has roosters at her little hobby farm, where she also grows her own vegetables. Of course, she doesn't make much from the eggs, but she is a nurse practitioner and her husband is an electrician, so they are loaded anyway.

The male is considered better meat if we talk about mongrel chicken, especially 'ayam kampong' in Indonesia and Malaysia. Rooster make tasty curry chicken, while the hen keeps alive to produce more egg.

The rooster has a gamier taste, which is good for dishes that need strong flavors. If you castrate the male, then a capon is fattier and softer than a hen, which is tasty in milder dishes, but some countries in Europe, like the UK or the Netherlands, have banned this practice, though I'm not sure what the status is in Germany.

All those people saying they should be shipped to countries with poor people... if they're too poor to have their own chickens, then they're entirely too poor to raise your male chickens. Raising chickens costs money in providing feed and roosters don't lay eggs. Therefore raising them is a lot more expensive than raising hens. Why do you think the rich western industries don't raise these male chicks in the first place? It's because they cost too much!

The male chicks get to have a long loving life and your farm is profitting in many ways from it. you need money? its a win win situation.

This is some mean BS. So, the male chicken does not produce as much meat, it's still meat. Carsten Bauck is doing a good thing there. My class is hatching eggs right now and I can take up to 6 chicks when they hatch (if they hatch). I am going to take 3 roosters and 3 hens, if we get enough to do that. To be conceived, grow, and hatch, just to be ground up or gassed seems so barbaric. If I am wrong, please explain why. None of my chickens will ever be slaughtered, unless the apocalypse comes and my family is starving. I would pay more for eggs from a company that did not cull the male chicks.

  • @theholybuttfungus5911

    @theholybuttfungus5911

    5 жыл бұрын

Betsy Collins It’s inefficient compared to other breeds though. You can use the feed to grow the male roosters of the egg laying breed and get a lower yield, use the feed for a meat breed yet a higher yield. You also paint it as if the chicks are simply thrown away. They’re often used for pet food especially in reptiles. Also in a flock you should always have a higher female ratio than males especially when starting out with store bought eggs. That’s simply because the males will fight quite a-bit and cause stress to the females via constant breeding. If you free range your chickens for quite some time some unusual behaviors start to show up like monogamy, standard polygamous, even three member pairs etc, but that’s a different topic. That is also leads into another great topic. You cull and eat your roosters to control the amount of males, most people don’t wanna buy males roosters unless if it’s a rare breed or a show chicken.

Actually, if you castrate the male chick before it becomes an adult, the resulting capon has more meat than a hen and the meat of that capon is also more moist, tender, and flavorful than that of a hen. And capons, due to lack of sex hormones also don't fight and don't crow like roosters. Many countries with a more developed cuisine do farm capons, but it's a lot more rare because the castration process is delicate and costs money. Some countries have made caponization illegal because they consider it "animal abuse", though I find that to be hypocritical because these same countries have no problems with gassing one-day-old male chicks.

Small humans are not less important then big humans. So I guess my conclusion is I'm ok with male chicks being killed, and use them for feed. The death part is not the issue for me, it's the poor treatment while alive. That should be the focus I think. But that's just my thought.

People just need to do what they want and let others do the same as long as harm is not done and animals, birds are not tortured. Humans are part of nature also. Humans don't always have the best life ? why shouldn't animals, birds be the same ? No one complains when someone kills a fly or a bug hits a windshield or you swallow one riding your bike? This is no better or worse just different. All of you need to get off your high horses and leave people alone. Save it for something that is really wrong ? If you want to help, buy as many of the male chickens as you can and eat them instead of buying at the store ? Or get the store to buy only those chickens for eating ? Otherwise this will never end.

Offer other country's the purchase of the males. Create a market for the males internationally. Its worth a try rather the gassing them or untying them into a grinder. Theres always a way to create a new industry. Is not always about the money put this to the test for a marketing strategy. Let the world decide than just setting idly by and do nothing

Not the right breed. They grow very slowly compared to meat breed, produce less meat and don't taste as good so it would be way more expensive for a lower quality product. It's actually less wasteful resource-wise to kill these male chicks and raise another breed if you want meat.

You can eat them and some countries consider them to be superior in taste to hens. But they're not cost efficient in meat production and big industries want to make more money.

in Pakistan rooster is $ 10 and chicken price is $ 5 , let me explain you meat rooster quality is better then chicken , I know you don't agree with me just 1 experiment , buy one rooster and one chicken , 2 different pot for cooking , make a deep cut on both of them , then apply 5 tables spoon of honey ,1 tables spoon of garlic ,1 table spoon of genger ,1 table spoon of lemon , salt , paper , spice as per taste , marinate for 24 hours then steam it or grill it , then let me know what do you think of it use some vegitables as a salid , try it once then you will know you are thrown your money in a drain , if you use it for cooking it will give a quality meat better then chicken but I agree less in weight rooster weight carries 1000gm to 14 gm but rooster weight 85gm to 1000gm , I wish and I hope you will rase this rooster and eat it ,

It's useless to say this, because people that grew up in countries where they eat industrially farmed chicken meat pumped up with saline water simply don't have that much of a developed palette to be able to discern the difference of quality between rooster meat versus hen meat.

If you watch the part about the farmer who raises the roosters, they say that it's inefficient, they grow very slowly, which is normal, but it means they eat a lot of food during their life, and still have less meat than the breed raised especially for meat, which were artificially selected to grow very quickly and are killed at only 6 weeks. The roosters raised on that organic farm are a little luckier, but they still get killed anyway. As for the other chicks, I wonder what's worse, being killed right after birth, or living a short and miserable life, and then being killed.

It's admirable what this farmer is trying to do, but if he's against needlessly killing animals why is he farming chickens to begin with? He should quit putting his money into hatcheries. Anyone who's truly against needlessly killing animals wouldn't kill or eat them or their excretions outside of a dire survival type situation. Whether slaughtered after a "good life" or murdered in their first days, killing an animal that wants to live is unethical. Eat something else.

Joel You don’t need to kill to eat eggs, so what’s your point? I have my own self sustaining flock and eat their eggs. I’m vegetarian - nothing on my farm dies unless it’s to natural causes. If people also do the same but struggle with too many males, you can find homes for them easily, there are lots of rooster rescues in the country side too.

Joel sorry but there is a big difference between killing an animal because it’s deemed useless in its first days and supporting/giving the animal a good life then using it to feed others. Also keep in mind going 100% meat free isn’t sustainable yet and probably never will be. Just the way of the world.
