About 10 years ago we did this but with a pigeon baby. Our hen took it in immediately and put the baby underneath her. She raised the pigeon to adulthood. Our pigeon just walks around the backyard pecking at bugs now and never fly’s away. True story.

I grew up on a farm in Canada and one day someone brought us two wild duck eggs. We put them under one of our laying hens and she hatched them. Every spring, the run-off from snow would form a small shallow lake in our barnyard. The two ducklings spent hours happily paddling around in it while their frantic mother hen circled around the edge calling for them. I felt so bad for her. She was such a good mom. They were big by the autumn and flew off with some other wild ducks who had come by.

I love the way they carefully tuck eggs underneath themselves. I love the way they talk to babies - pretty much the same as a rooster finding food for his ladies. We hatched 3 muscovies under a persistently broody hen. So funny when they found water! She was a light Sussex bantam, so fairly large for a banty. Unfortunately she hated their toilet habits and when they grew the same size, she'd had enough. They tried to be with mum but she attacked them. A few months later in the field one of the ducks pounced on her - they didn't forget how she behaved. A harsh lesson learnt - only use hen a similar size to the adult ducks. You have a very gentle Wyandotte (?) who is happy to have you handle her baby.

This is the sweetest thing! Look how they adore each other not knowing any different!

This is the cutest video I've seen. That chicken is a real good mom, I saw how her feathers started to stand up when you touched the little duck. Protective mama. My grandparents used to raise pigs, and I learned from her that when a pig mom has more babies than teats, you have to take the placenta of a new mom and rub the piglet with it so she will accept it. I also learned that piglets are born with a whole set of teeth, so in order for the mom not to get bites (it happens) and she gets an infection, it was easier to cut off the piglets teeth. I was a kid when I saw this and horrified that she was doing that, but with all my grandmother's patience and soft voice she explained the whole process. I'm 70 and I still remember that day and their farm. ♥♥ I also had wonderful summer vacations.

Growing up in cuba we had those situations happen in our family farm. We even used wild duck eggs and use the chickens to hatch them. Awesome video!
