My thoughts on how the set will work on draft: in the panel MARO said it was a "soft typal" set as you said in the video, so I'm thinking there wont actually be that much typal support (I don't think there will be 2 color uncommon lords, though there will probably be a few cards here or there that interact with the type but don't require it to be good) Rather, the types will all share a mechanical identity; like all mice are low drop aggro creatures, all badgers are chunkier beaters for a ramp/midrange deck, etc. Like Maro said, if you draft all the creatures of a certain type, your deck will be functional. I think this would actually be a really elegant design from a new drafter perspective, as even if someone doesn't know what they are doing they can accidentally into a functional deck just by taking cards that share a theme.

Actually, in the case of the Jace art specifically, in the article "A first look at Bloomburrow" by Clayton Kroh from Feb 23 on the WotC website, we're told that the Jace art is from a non-canonical bonus sheet titled "Imagine: Curious Critters" that "invites you to envision renowned Planeswalkers and creatures were they to visit the plane of Bloomburrow!" But yes Ral is actually a card in the set. Clearly Planeswalkers become animals when they visit Bloomburrow, but I've also heard theories that propose the inverse as well, and propose that Garruk might have always been a literal bear, that just Planeswalked away from Bloomburrow

They actually have established that *certain* planes can affect visitors, but generally don't work the other way around. Segovia is at a 1:100 scale to other planes, and visitors are shrunk while things from there don't grow when taken out, so presumably it works the same way for Bloomburrow

@@RedBobcatGames True but then again there's so few examples that I'm at least willing to give the benefit of the doubt that some planes have a stronger effect than others, especially since Bloomburrow has a form-shifted dragon, which presumably wasn't a Planeswalker. Suspension of disbelief is a really subjective experience but the idea that planeswalkers become animals in bloomburrow fits in really well to me. Segovia is famous as a plane where everything is little and it had been canon for a long time that planeswalkers who traveled there would become small as well but creatures summoned from there would remain their natural size, hence why we see 3/3 leviathans and 1/1 angels. For a plane to enforce that sort of characteristic is consistent with the lore of the blind eternities. That would also explain why we're seeing characters who are still planeswalkers rather than a fourth set about Kellan. The omenpaths subvert this pattern as we saw during March of the machines and the giant phyrexians

As cool as it would be for the watchers from the MOM story to be something new, it’s heavily implied that they were Elspeth and Serra- the story even explicitly says that Serra shows elspeth what is happening all across the planes, so even if it’s not directly said who the watchers are, there is one answer in the same arc that fits too perfectly for it to be a whole other thing, I think.

So based on comments from his podcast Rosewaters statement about "looking at what we've printed recently" seems to primarily apply to standard legal sets. Because the main concern he has when talking about it is wanting to make sure that Bloomburrow standard is back compatible with the other sets they've done recently. With that in mind and speaking with the benefit of knowledge you didn't have at time of recording here's what I think of the pairs: Knowing that the fox Jace is on the bonus sheet I'm not convinced that "Fox" will necessarily be one of the animal typal themes for the set. If they are the idea that they're white blue isn't supported by recent trends which have given us 1 card each in Black Green and White. Lizards are probably Black Red seeing as all 4 lizards in OoTJ were red and the sole multi colored one, Laughing Jasper Flint, was Black Red. As I've seen others point out Black White makes the most sense for Bats given recent printings but lightning powers aren't typically associated with those colors so it'll be interesting to see if that's their pairing. With Lizards taking Black Red I'd wager Raccoons are probably Green Red. Both for theme reasons and because of recent printings. The only badger we've gotten in the last 5 sets was Green so that narrows it down. With Green White taken I'd guess Green Black. There's no question what color rabbits are in. There's been exactly 1 black cat and 9 white one's printed since MOM so this pair seems reasonable although idk if Cats fit with the woodland critters vibe the set is aiming for. No idea what the other type could be in its place. Bria, Riptide Rogue tells us that Otter's are definitely a tribe in the set and that they're Blue Red. Mable also confirms the Red White tribe. Leaving frogs for either Blue Green or White Blue. The art we've been shown suggests green but with the knightly vibe the dude gives off i think it could go either way. Although there are more recent frogs in green and blue with the exceptions being two versions of the Gitrog Monster so Idk if he should be counted.

Since they have 6 animals teamed up to defend the realm in the main artwork, ima guess that those r the 2 colour combos that don't have black. So if mice r RW, ima guess that frogs r GU, bats r UR, rabbits r GW, badgers r RG, n lizards r WU. As for wut animals r using the BX combinations, iunno, ima have to continue the video n see if they gave u any more hints. Ok, seeing the abilities, I'd like to change the lizards as the likely don't have lots of flying. So maybe they r UR n the bats r WU? But birds would be more likely to be WU so now iunno 🤔 They only planeswalker that should've been made for this set is Greist as she is simply an insect who leads a swarm she amasses anew on each plane she visits. This should've been the story of how she realized that she had become a monster n gain the self-awareness to change n become the character they explained to us when they released her card.

Based on Gev's artwork and title, I'm assuming he'd have something to do with Red / X as a colour combo. There's no way that you'd have a "Scaled Scorch" + Lizard creature type be Golgari over Gruul or Rakdos. Also, We had a few Lizards (RIP Viashino) in Thunder Junction just drop in the Rakdos pairing, as well as having Bramble Familiar in Green, which lead's me to believe that Racoons would probably be Golgari, and Lizards in Rakdos. Just seems to make more sense from my end. With regards to a few other pairing choices, I believe that Foxes would be more akin to Dimir, as it fits their cunning nature more so than Bats, as well as there being tons of support for bats in Black/White from Ixalan. Perhaps we have those Orzhov Bats, Dimir Foxes, and some sort of Bird species at the helm for Azorius. I was going to go for Owls, but it looks like one of the calamity beasts already fills that role, so i'm not too sure anymore.

I would make some shuffling in your guesses. First, I think that birds are WU. We've seen some bird art, and WU birds is already an established color/type pairing. I also think the BG will be squirrels. We're definitely getting Squirrels in the set, and they are traditionally BG. That means we have to move Badgers and Lizards (and resultingly, Racoons). I think Lizards goes to BR, Raccoons go to RG, and Badgers go to WB (this is a very loose fit because of the art and their literal colors haha). This cuts out Foxes (who don't fly, so its hard to imagine them as UW), and cats (which feel like a better mechanical fit for WB than my guess, admittedly).

Okay, so this comment might turn out to be a bit of a novel, but I think all of this is worth saying. First of all, I think you're misusing the term "suspension of disbelief" in a subtle way. The more complete term as it was originally used by philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge is "willing suspension of disbelief," and it describes the way we as audience members willingly set aside our need for things to make sense in order to take a fictional setting at face value. Because of this, it's a misrepresentation to say that the designers' job is to make us believe in every new fictional plane that comes out in a Magic set. Rather, it's their job to provide us with a framework through which to understand that new plane and a consistent internal logic that explains why things work the way they do on this plane. Considering the fact that the set won't come out for months, I don't think it's fair to say that they've failed to accomplish that yet. Next, I'd like to address each of the questions you ask around 11:00 and explain why they aren't very reasonable. 1) Why are Jace and Ral there, and how does that tie into the greater story? Like I said above, we only just got our first previews of this set, and it won't actually be released for quite some time. It's kind of unreasonable to suggest that we should immediately understand exactly why these characters are here or what Bloomburrow's role in the larger MtG narrative will be. Until we see more cards and lore from the set, I don't think we can really comment on these kinds of questions. There's also no reason for Jace or Ral traveling to Bloomburrow to be any harder to believe than them traveling to any other plane in the multiverse. If you can easily accept that Jace has been to Zendikar and Innistrad, you should be able to accept that he's been to Bloomburrow. 2) Why have we never heard of this plane before? I respond to this question with another question: why are you holding Bloomburrow to a different standard than other planes? Did you have a problem with the fact that we had never heard of Arcavios, a plane that supposedly contains the foremost magic school in the multiverse and a library of all the knowledge in the multiverse, until Wizards R&D decided to make a set about it? If not, I don't see what's so weird about us never hearing about anthropomorphic animal world. I think part of the appeal of Magic is that we continue to get more glimpses into just how many wild different planes the multiverse contains. I would prefer for the worldbuilding team to keep making up new, weird worlds for us to enjoy than for them to just stop creating new planes and only visit the ones we've already seen. 3) Doesn't Bloomburrow have planeswalkers of its own, and if so, why weren't they in War of the Spark? First, there's no rule saying every plane must have planeswalkers. Being a planeswalker is relatively rare after all, especially since lots of former planeswalkers just got desparked. Second, even if Bloomburrow does have native planeswalkers, why should they have been in War of the Spark? The real-world answer is obviously that Bloomburrow hadn't been invented yet when that set came out, so I know you're not asking from a practical perspective. And from a narrative perspective, we were told rather clearly in the War of the Spark story that there were unnamed planeswalkers on Ravnica from other planes we hadn't heard of who didn't get cards in the set. The set could only contain so many planeswalkers (esp. brand new ones), so they couldn't possibly show off every planeswalker who might one day exist in a future setting.

So, going through your points as I read them. Yes, everything you said in that first section is true. However, if I were to have elaborated I'd have made the point that I feel recently the designers have been failing in their job to provide us a solid framework to understand their work. I’m willing to put the work in to suspend my disbelief. But when we get to a point that I’m having to write my own head cannon to make their world make sense, they’ve asked too much. I have a whole video on Battlecards making that exact point, and I am concerned that this will be an issue here on Bloomburrow too. Oh, and also I didn't say they've failed to accomplish that yet. As I say, these are only concerns I have for what might be a potential issue I foresee. 1: So, again I think you misunderstand that, yes these are questions I have now about what I’ve been shown, but no I’m not expecting the answer now because the set isn’t out yet. I’m saying that by looking at what I’m shown, I instinctively have questions and if they aren’t answered I will be unsatisfied with the set. This may not come to pass, but I am worried it might, which is why it’s in my “concerns” section. 2: I did have that same question about Arcavios. I dislike the Omen paths concept, but in a way I’m glad that’s finally pushed WotC to (seemingly) start doing sets that aren’t just a backdrop for the latest episode in the Gatewatch saga. When planes aren’t worlds, but just the next set dressing for one long Planeswalker story it makes me consider the multiverse as a whole. And when one location in that whole setting is a Wizard school so famous it’s known across the multiverse, yes I ask why we’ve never heard of it before. To what you said earlier, this is not on me. This is the framework that the designers are creating and how they ask us to view their world. And it’s an issue that will get worse as time moves on because now with the omen paths open, everything is connected all of the time. 3: Yes, of course. But again, my point here is not that I want answers to these questions, but that I don’t want to be asking them in the first place. The developers have made narrative choices that by extension make me ask questions. It may not be an issue, it’s just a concern. I’m not really looking for answers. I’m using these questions to highlight how I worry I’m not going to be able to fill the blanks in if they make the holes in the plot too large. This was my main issue with Battlecards, but why I’m okay with Sagas for example. I feel with Battle cards, the developers are asking for too much work my end to suspend my disbelief

The omenpaths are because they want to distance themselves from the mainstream dying off of the superhero genre. Ultimately what I see happening is them trying this for 4-5 years until they make everything muddied flavor like Thunder Junktion and then have the Eldrazi wipe this nonsense clean of the multiverse's ass. (Thus Ulalek being introduced as a panic button in MH3.) Jace is here because they've sunk so much money into him being the face of Magic over a 20 year period to the point of him not being A main character, but THE main character. Where it's almost weird if they have a set without his involvement. Even non-Magic people with light exposure to the brand recognize him as being Magic related IP and abandoning that, would be foolhardy on WoTC's part. Don't break what's worked, right?

The thing about this set and honestly most of fiction trying to depict a species other than humans is that it just feels like humans but reskinned. This set specifically feels particularly human despite having no humans in it because all the animals will behave like humans and are anthropomorphised. It's basically just furries...

Well, maybe. But again look at those birds in the background. They don't seem anthropomorphised I think. Or at least from what I can see they're not wearing clothes. Yeah, I dunno. Yeah, I suppose so. But also I think that's weirdly the point? Though now you mention it, I actually do think it would be cool to do an entire animal set. Or like, a non-sentinent set. Just a wild post-apocalyptic plane set in the ruins of a long lost society, inhabited by whatever robotic machines of war still function and the giant wild beasts able to survive their onslaught. It would have to be very creature heavy, but would also make for an interesting plane for a few characters to get lost in and need to survive. Have we seen anything like that from Magic before?
