Preparing for a Weekend Away with Draft Horses!! // Draft Animal Power Network Field Days 2023

Today we are preparing for a weekend away with draft horses as we are headed to the Draft Animal Power Network (DAPNET) field days 2023!! We are taking our Belgian horse, Bill, & our Percheron horse, Ken, along with us and Jim will be helping with some draft horse logging seminars. We hope to see some of you there!
DAPNET website- www.draftanimalpower.org/
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I love watching you back the team up to the hay wagon. Watching them side Step when you turn them amazes me. You have done a great job training them Jim. Wish I was close enough to help you fix the wagon but I am sure William will be a great help to you. If you are done haying for the year then it becomes a winter project. Be safe on your travels to the horse power show. God bless you both for the work that you do.

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry to see these challenges. It seems even harder when you're trying to get ready to leave. As someone said, you could have edited them out but I'm so glad you didn't. We all have challenges, as you know, and it's VERY motivating and inspiring to see how you handle adversity. It's sad to see people have troubles but it helps to know we're not alone. We can take our time and come thru them.

Broken wagon beams, glad it's not me, been there more than once. Hardwood, or steel is the answer! For traveling and overnighting I made up 20 steel gate panels, they are 5 ft high by 8 ft long and have 4 rails. They have interlocking ends which can pin together to make temporary corrals. 2 always hang on the side of my horse truck as ramp fences, but if I'm setting up camp in the bush I can make a couple good sized corrals in a matter of 20 minutes. I haul my horses in a 1 ton dually with a stock box, so I can tow anything behind, forecart, implements, my tilt trailer with equipment, sleigh carriage etc, along with gates, water, round bale of hay, for a job far away where I'm setting up camp. Glad to see Ken working again. Best of luck this weekend and safe travels to and from.

Hey, Jim, random question. Why not teach your horses "just a step?" By and large you mostly don't have a lot of problems with them backing too much, or otherwise not being in a good position for you. But, there's always those relatively frequent situations where if they understood "one step" that'd be a lot easier for you than some back and forth. Training time is really precious for you though, so, I know that's not something you can do on careless whims. Just a thought. Have a great weekend this weekend! Glad Ken is doing better!

I’m sure someone has asked this already. But where does William keep his horse during the day ? And why don’t we ever see it?

Yes .Called a pasture .Jim's electric fence , keeps all his critters (cows and ho 25:21 rses) home most of the time .Cows are at the neighbour's, always a stressful time .Cows are in the oats ,that shifted us kids off the couch from in front of the T V . Now there memories, at the time an annoyance. 😊
