You're so RIGHT! We just lost one of our 43+ year olds. Horses can only digest what is crushed and ground up, typically by their teeth. For "hard keeper" geriatric horses, the issue is often a lack of water. If they are semi-dehydrated they won't gain weight. (Remember the old saying about leading a horse to water...? So, HYDRATED beet pulp pellets adds water to the GI tract.) Pellets are more expensive, but they are "pre-chewed" for horses with bad teeth.

I am not claiming that the following is "the absolute best way to do it".....I am simply stating that it's how our family (ie: my parent's decision) did things. From 1963-1992, my family owned several Quarter horses. Some we rode around the cattle farm, March-November...and rode at horse shows, May-September. Others were simply brood mares, and their offspring. Anyway...all of them were kept on pasture grass year round. During November-March, that was supplemented with square hay bales. On an average year we had 9 horses to feed. For every 3 horses, every morning we would feed 2 bales of brome hay, that those 3 horses could munch on during the day. And each horse got 1 "flake" (a 4 inch thickness of compressed) of an alfalfa bale. Then in the evening, each group of 3 horses would get 1 additional bale of brome. Twice a week, each horse also would be fed a mixture of bagged feed.... mixture of oats, corn, Milo, and I think barley. The amount each horse received, depended on the horse's age, health, and what it was being used for. Some only received 1/2 of a (one gallon metal Folgers coffee can). Some received a full can. A couple of the oldest, received 1-1/2 cans. We did have to buy the bags of feed mixture at a nearby CO-OP. But fortunately, we rarely had to buy hay bales, because we owned and baled our own brome and alfalfa fields. All of the hay for the horses were baled in the standard square bales. All of the brome and alfalfa that we fed to our cattle, were baled in square bales until approximately 1980. From 1980-2012, those bales for the cattle were baled in round bales.

I have never seen Alfalfa hay with sooo many sticks in it. Make sure you give your horses enough so they pick through the hay only eating the good nutrition hay. If they eat the sticks you didn't give them enough. The straw and sticks is what gives your horse a hey belly.

From experience alfalfa taste better… Lol And don’t forget about sweet feedYum with the molasses….. But I only eat it during the winter keeps me warm
Man I bet that with the drought this year prices are going get higher. My uncle in south Ga. has only been able to 2 cuts this year where he normally gets 4.
Thanks.
Thanks!!
Get my hay early, got it 😂
Idk if it’s considered good or bad but my dad gives them mainly grass hay a bit of alfalfa and horse feed pellets
Thanks
Alfalfa takes a huge amount of water. So it's gettin scarce.

Alfalfa hay in California is 29.00 a bale.
Amen!
Farly sixties alfalfa was $25 a ton for 2nd cutting
We had 2 horses one was about 30 and we couldn’t keep any weight on her so we would just use round bales but now after they have passed our young horse is FAT
You have more hay then those two types. You should tell ppl "in your area." Here in NE we feed horses ONLY timothy hay... not grass. Just saying.. 😉
Wow half ton in KY is 25$ 180$ in Montana
Yeah, here in the south I thought it was bad when hay went from twenty to twenty five dollars a round bail.
I live in South Carolina and we pay 25 dollars for a 75 pound square bale
2022. So. California alfalfa 90 to 100 lbs 3 strand retail price 11/28/22 $29.95 + bale. And that is the least expensive I have been able to find.
600 a ton in alaska
Mashallah ❤
I live in Texas. I own 10 acres and i have to ask people to come cut my grass. I have coastal grass. I have seen the squares at 3 for $10.00.
We feed our horses regular hay but we feed them two scoops of horse feed and one scoop of alfalfa pellets
Hey I have two horses …can you do a video on if your horse throws a shoe how too repair it good enough until the ferrie comes back.
I owned a horse in south fl it cost more then most places to get good feed
What kind of soil do you need to grow alfalfa?
I could use some advice on this subject , i moved from michigan , where we have hay , to florida , now i got cows , no horses , but you should see what my choices are to feed my cows hay... in the winter months is when i feed round bales , they wont touch it when the grass is growing ( summer ) but i cant feed cows hay thats to rich , from what i understand ( if i could find anything better ) im not used to the difference in grasses ..( still learning )

Reason im asking is cause i still have 40 acres in michigan it has awesome alfalfa growing capabilities, rolling hills good soil , but the 40 acres in florida will not grow good grasses , its a swamp basically , and thats where my cows are , only 12 of them ,i could transport my own hay , but the cost wont be worth it for what there paying for cows ..
Depends on the alfalfa as well. If you get into some dairy grade alfalfa with protein levels 20+ you are going to burn up the horses liver if you aren't careful.
trade futures..to lock in the price
Man I wish hay was that cheap here. 65 pound three string is $45 here in Miami Florida 2 string is $18-$20
Poison farmed chemically sprayed straw. GREAAAAATTT!...
We pay 25.99 for 1 bail of alfalfa. Prices have come down from 32.99
Looks like nasty stemmy Alfalfa!!
Hey brother do you allow folks to visit your ranch?
Well ... That sounds like Good Horse Sense to me ... There is typically 16 - 20 Bales Per Ton ... If a Bale weighs 100 lbs then 2000/100 = 20 Bales ... So he is paying $12.50 to $16.00 per Bale ... September 20 2022 (1640 hrs)
👏🏽👏🏼🤠🇺🇸
I have hay enough, for four horses.
I have no problem with alfalfa,.as long as it is non-gmo alfalfa so that it isn't sprayed with weedkiller
That much per ton? How much do you typically need for a year, per horse?
How much alfalfa hay does an average horse need per month?
Always confuse hay and straw lol
Raising cows just on hay and corn cost 50 dollars a day for 5. People need to realize what this is going to do to their food. 4$lb hanging weight. Means 6 to 7 a lb for ground
How do you store hay Alfa or how do you keep from rotting
Make sure it is good bay. Don’t need any sandburs causing weed of the mouth.
How much is a ton of hay? Like how many bales?

You're in mah whay Jim get away from the hay
I baled hay when I was a teenager back in the 60s. There was first cut and second cut. Is alfalfa hay the first cut?

Here in Kansas... depending on how much rain we got each year from April thru September...our family would get 2 to 5 cuttings of alfalfa per field. We never got less than 2 cuttings. Our brome hay though... only one cutting per field...which we would normally cut/bale during the month of June.
Has anyone see the youtuber that does shorts from his auto shop
Where in Montana is this ranch? Just curious as I was born in Havre and am very familiar with the highline area.
