Here is part 10 of the 15-part Premier Strat type guitar building series. This series is modeled after the beginner’s guitar construction class that I teach at a local community college. If you are new to guitar building…this will give you all the knowledge you need to be successful. Of course, you will need some basic woodworking ability…and at least some tools as needed. I require that my class students build either a Tele or Strat type guitar for their first build. They are simple…yet amazingly efficient. Leo Fender was an absolute genius…inventing things that are still widely used over 60 years later.
We will be using the Maximum Guitar Works template system. The basic seven-piece Strat set includes the body and pickup rout template, the neck pocket template, the back tremolo template, neck template, fretboard template, the standard pickguard template, and the rear tremolo cover template. The complete basic template system includes safety grips and hardened steel drill bushing for alignment and accuracy. There are other options available, please ask for any special needs.

First of all: Welcome back, Steve! You will probably too busy to read this comment, but I wanna suggest you an addition for your template system. Basically is a bass guitar 34" scale Fit-All with the neck pocket and the various pickups options, just like the one you have made for the standard guitars scale lenght. I know that there is a section on your website for asking custom or personalized templates, but I think that this option is very versatile for a lot of people to make their own projects. I hope to see more of your videos in the future, you are a very great virtual teacher, cheers!

My Frankencaster came with a stainless pickguard. Talk about industrial. I'm replacing it with a custom plastic pickguard.

I always wanted a strat with highly figured top and a clear pickguard to protect the top and then paint the edge with black or gold. But now that I am watching this I that I bet Steve could figure out a way to do binding bonded to the edge of a clear pickguard. So do you think such a thing is possible? I know binding is a different type of plastic and using solvent to bing would most likely make the clear plastic milky unless it was lexan. Just a thought, you welcome to ignore it if you have no time. But they always say doesn't hurt to ask. Unless you figured out how to smack somebody thru the computer screen. In which case can you tell me how to do that?

What are the two holes on the back of the walnut body by the bridge ferrule block route?

If you look back in the older parts of this series…you will see that I am using the Schaller Hannes 6 fixed bridge on the walnut top guitar. That is for the unique mounting hardware. Thanks for the comment…I should have mentioned that in this video.

@@maximumguitarworks Thank you. I asked because I have seen it on other guitars and wasn't sure why. So far Ive only built with Hipshot, Floyds, etc. No Schaller, so am not familiar with that mounting.

Great video! FYI I have used clear packing tape instead of wax paper that worked quite well.

Why don't you try make pick guards from EBONY veneer or Rosewood ---instead of cheapo plastic?

Did you not watch the second half of the video we made a wooden cover plate same technique I just don’t have a personal preference for wood pick guards, even though in some cases, they look nice.
