Here is part 8A of the 15-part premier Strat type guitar building series. This series is modeled after the beginner’s guitar construction class that I teach at a local community college. If you are new to guitar building…this will give you all the knowledge you need to be successful. Of course, you will need some basic woodworking ability…and at least some tools as needed. I require that my class students build either a Tele or Strat type guitar for their first build. They are simple…yet amazingly efficient. Leo Fender was an absolute genius…inventing things that are still widely used over 60 years later.
We will be using the Maximum Guitar Works template system. The basic seven piece Strat set includes the body and pickup rout template, the neck pocket template, the back tremolo template, neck template, fretboard template, the standard pickguard template, and the rear tremolo cover template. The complete basic template system includes safety grips and hardened steel drill bushing for alignment and accuracy. There are other options available, please ask for any special needs.
Learn more about the template systems through my past KZread videos.

The bit I use for most body cavity routing is linked below. I swap the 5/8” bearing for three ½” bearing. This is my go-to router bit!

Steve! Love the running commentary! I was trying to answer the depth question but couldn’t find my notebook and my dog ate my homework. Great stuff, your templates really are the most accurate, safest, and least frustrating system out there. Folks if you haven’t tried them you REALLY owe it yourself to buy a set. Credit cards are MEANT for these types of purchases!😁

Fantastic episode and thanks for all the extra insight! I also have seen the cool „Maximum Guitar Works Factory Tour“ videos from Texas Toast… So I must say that I was really fascinated and surprised to what order of magnitude behind your efforts things have already grown. You have my full respect and now also understand how you manage to produce in such quality!

Another inspiring video full of details and helpful insights. I always look forward to these videos and watch them multiple times to catch as many details as I can. I was wondering if the swimming pool cavity would be a good idea for a Tele? Thank you!

I can't remember ever seeing a swimming pool route in a Tele. It only works under a pickgaurd...so it could work as a possible mid and neck configuration. Do I need to design one? Might be worth a try.

Hi Steve, I am not aware of a Tele with a swimming either, but I thought it might be an interesting idea for a future build. I was thinking it would enable some weight reduction, future flexibility of pickup options with a simple change of the pickguard and all without retrofit routing. Best Regards

what does a swimming pool route do to the tone vs traditional 3 SSS route? I'm building a Nile Rodgers Hitmaker copy, and I know that his guitar is lighter than others. Makes me wonder if he had a swimming pool route. Hitmaker body was a 1960 strat, with 1959 neck. Thank you for your awesome content!

Ha...I'm not getting sucked into that debate! It is funny...but you will see arguments on both sides of this question. As I said in my video...I do it for reasons other than tone. One of the reasons I love electric guitars so much...is that I have more latitude for creativity than we would with an acoustic guitar. Because I believe that no one thing is going to make a difference to make a good guitar bad...or vise versa. The most import things to me are quality materials and part...and great craftsmanship. Outside of that...I do what makes sense for me and the situation. Good luck.

Question, I want to buy a template from you, for my first build, i want to make a tele with a humbucker in the bride and a volume control, Do your tele templates also have the off body holes for the dowel pins? What would you suggest? Thank you for sharing you knowledge.

  • @maximumguitarworks

Thank you for your question. Yes all of my templates incorporate alignment pins… Where the body always uses the off body pin system. So, any of those templates on our website will incorporate those same features that you see in my videos. www.maximumguitarworks.com Email or call me if you need help selecting to right template set.

is your vaccuum wired in with the router?

  • @maximumguitarworks

Yes. Even with a pretty powerful dust collection system...a vac does better with the small dust chute on routers. But yes...my shop vac is switched so it powers up when I start the tool that is plugged into the vac.
