Prefab Quartz Countertop Install Using INEXPENSIVE Tools

Quartz is one of the most popular countertop surfaces for kitchens and bathroom vanity tops. It is an engineered stone that is resistant to scratches, staining, and cracking. Quartz comes in many colors and patterns, making it easier to design with than natural Granite or Marble. Quartz is either sold by the slab (usually 5' x 10') or in what we call "prefab" pieces; which is short for pre-fabricated. These pre-fab pieces come with a finished edge on the front and usually one or two of the sides finished as well. The pre-fab quartz pieces are easier to transport and handle, take less time to install, and can be cut and polished with relatively inexpensive tools. Common pre-fab sizes are 2x8 and 2x10. They can also come in bigger sizes for kitchen islands and peninsulas.
In this video I show how to cut and fabricate a pre-fab vanity top with an undermount sink. While I don't go over all the details of how I do it, I have a few other videos that show more detailed instruction. I advise you to watch those other videos too. It's also important to note, that quartz pre-fab is cut and polished the same way that granite is. Here are links to those other videos:

Yeah. Ruin your eyes and you are no longer in the tiling business. I wear prescription glasses and have worked with natural stone for decades. The last couple of pairs of glasses had lots of dings in them when I replaced them. Both were replaced after a major ding made them unusable. Think about that.

I'm a big fan of this channel and Isaac's work but I agree with a couple of the comments on here - 1) Using a timber template of the sink cut out clamped to the bench-top or using a around template for the core piece. 2) Proper respirator + safety glasses + water to cut down the dust + use of a fan to blow the dust away from the work area. Too many stonemasons suffering/dying in Australia from working with engineered stone installation

Isaac, please use a respirator mask when cutting w/o wet saw. That’s inorganic compounds you’re inhaling. They will go into lungs and never breakdown, permanently damaging the cilia. I’m sure others will also suggest goggles but the lung damage is honestly much more dangerous to your health. Keep up the fine work 👍

I'm so thrilled that you plunge the same way I do with those hoole saws. Using your elbow as a stand and both hands close to your chest literally turns you into a human drill-press and it feels awesome. On the other hand though I've learned my lesson letting those things get away from you right at the bottom of the hole mostly on tile cuts but I always put a piece of concrete board underneath what I'm drilling through when I'm using those diamond braised bits. They are so nice We use the shida-tool brand

This may appear to be logical but it will result in cut lines that are not straight. The diamond blade will cut into the wood and create other problems. No legitimate stone fabricator would ever do it that way. They use a bridge saw or they freehand it like Isaac did. If a DIY'er wanted to attempt this the better advice is to practice cutting freehand on scraps and then attack it exactly how it's shown on the video.

@@truthconcrete5230 I agree the disc binds with the ply at a certain depth, but I still think it's useful for the initial guiding groove and to get nice corners. Also, I don't recommend this freehand method to anyone as grinders can be very violent and we are made of soft tissue. It's easy to get complacent and lose the respect the danger power tools have. Table saw got me a many years ago and I was being semi careful and experienced.

Glad I stumbled on your channel. I subscribed. Im a GC in San Diego, too bad you don't work down here, I could use a great tile and counter guy- I like your style. Its hard to find subcontractors that are craftsmen and who care about their work. Im looking forward to watching more of your vids. Im going to try installing the Quartzite myself this time around ( cuz its at my own house) Question- I noticed in the past, the counter guys always install the under mount sinks with the countertop sitting back about 1/2 inch. in other words, the stainless steel sink is visible. seems weird because standing water can sit on that edge. Im going to take a guess that the counter guys messed up all these times? or were too lazy to add that 1/2 inch to the template?? or is there just 2 different ways of doing the under mount sink? thanks , keep up your great work!

Great looking bathroom. I see installs all the time from others, that will do a 2 piece install and put the seam right in center of sink, drives me whacky, when I see that....ARGH🤪, especially when they could have done a single slab install 🤦🏼 That slab looks nice with the under mount sink, great work in the cuts. Assuming anyone watching that is NOT experienced with the tools, or doing this “kind of work” will naturally take proper safety precautions. Yes, Isaac is a Pro, been doing this for many many years AND is comfortable with using a grinder that way. So, know ppl typing & freakin out about PPE etc....; but I’d hope that for the ppl who don’t do this daily or are comfortable running a grinder w/o guard.....wouldn’t (& yes, accidents do happen, even to the most experienced, as I’m sure everyone knows....). Regardless, banging good job Isaac for what working with, and looks beautiful, well done bro👍🏻 Have a good one✌🏻

Nice job. Obviously your methods work, but I have a few different things I do. I like to use a sharp pencil on light to medium color quartz or marble and a steel tipped scribe to mark granite or dark quartz for a very accurate line to cut to. And I like to hold the grinder horizontal with the blade on the right side so the dust is blowing away from me the way the blade contacts the stone. If I need to cut wet on certain marbles/granite that don’t cut clean dry or if I need to cut a long straight line I use a worm drive saw with a 7” blade (easy to hold a sponge and handle in right hand and trigger in left hand cutting right to left so blade spins down into edge at contact point. This is what I do for precise/clean mitering as well cutting right under a 1/32” bevel. By the way you should wear glasses with that thin blade, I’ve had one of those blow up on me cutting 3cm quartzite lol.

@@b4sicscrub757 it varies a lot depending on the specific quartzite. Some are just about as absorbent as white marble and some aren’t absorbent at all like cristallo which is basically just quartz crystal. They’re all very hard and I’d recommend cutting tools specifically made for ultra compact materials like quartzite blades for your saw or turbo mesh porcelain blades for your grinder. Some are chippier than others too, so you may be doing multiple rounds of glue fill during the polishing process. Do you know what specific type of quartzite you might be working with?
