Power Rack and Pinion Steering System

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here's how a hydraulic steering rack works to turn the wheels on your car.
Hydraulic steering has been used for decades to provide assist to drivers turning the wheels of especially heavy vehicles.
Fluid is pressurized by a hydraulic pump and is sent to the rotary valve via the high pressure hose.
Depending on the direction, the fluid is pushed into the opposite side of the cylinder housing, pushing the piston. The piston is connected to the rack, which connects the tie rods and hence the wheels at the steering knuckle.
Its all explained in the video, Thanks

    Great and very clear video. I perceived i interchanged the high pressured lines at the rotary valve section during rack installation, Please i like to know if the the steering system will still work fine ( i mean not hard to turn) if I leave it that way?

  • @automotivespot

    @automotivespot

    2 жыл бұрын

    Dear both the high pressure lines are same, so there will be no problem (hard steering) if you interchange these lines. The most important thing is tha if you Interchanged the place at valve you must interchange its place at rack too.

  • @automotivespot

    @automotivespot

    There is a built-in spring loaded pressure relief valve, which operates when the pressure hits the preset limit. I hope you are clear now.

    Thanks Nice and clear demonstration, I have a problem, when I park the vehicle for 8 hours the oil level reach to maximum and once engine starts the oil level becomes at min level... please advise what could be the possible reason...

  • @automotivespot

    @automotivespot

    Жыл бұрын

    The most likely reason for the power steering oil reaching the maximum level when the vehicle is parked for 8 hours and then going to the minimum level when the vehicle is started and driven is that there is a leak in the power steering system. When the vehicle is parked for an extended period, the power steering oil settles at the bottom of the reservoir, and any leaks in the system allow air to enter the system, which causes the oil level to drop. When the vehicle is started and the power steering system is engaged, the pump draws in air instead of oil, which causes the power steering to feel weak or "sluggish" and the oil level to drop further

    You must check for leakage, if there is a leak, definitely it will result as a hard steering, the second thing is to make sure there must be enough grease in joints to make the steering smooth, Thanks

    on my Sonata 2002 v6,16", there is a leak in either L or R metal line, I just want to replace the hose/Line Instead of changing the whole Rack & Pinion , which the mechanics do.What do you suggest.??

    No need to change the whole rack and pinion, if the leak is in the pressure line, just replace it with a new one. Thats it

  • @automotivespot

    I haven't shoot such video, but the possibility of leakage, is due to some crack , or loose fitting or maybe the yoke is not properly fitted at its place.

    Sticking or binding components, such as a king pin, ball joint, bell crank or even the steering column can prevent the steering wheel from returning to center after a turn

    Dear, all the magic happens in rotary control valve, which you fail to describe, as how it changes direction when the steering is turned. Thanks for showing the inside though, good effort.

    if there is oil leakage around the rubber at the valve what could be the main reason, which part need replacement?

  • @automotivespot

    @automotivespot

    4 ай бұрын

    The reason could be a damaged or worn-out seal within the valve assembly. Typically, the part that needs to be replaced would be the valve seal to stop the leakage. It's important to diagnose and address the issue promptly to prevent further damage to the power steering system.

All this time I have been observing why no one has modified the Pinion Gear. The info is that by modifying the Pinion Gear you can lighten the steering. Thank you very much in advance, I am waiting for your answer and vlog

    If I have metal shavings in my power steering system should I replace my rack and pinion or flush and replace pump only??

  • @automotivespot

    @automotivespot

    5 ай бұрын

    Metal shavings in your power steering system could indicate a serious issue. It's recommended to thoroughly inspect the system to identify the source of the shavings. If the damage is extensive, replacing the rack and pinion might be necessary. Flushing the system and replacing the pump alone may not address the root cause.
