How Hydraulic Power Steering Works

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here's how hydraulic power steering works on your car!
Check out my behind-the-scenes of the making of this video here:
kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6KVwad8pLLakps.html
Hydraulic power steering is used to assist the turning of the wheels on modern heavy vehicles. A power steering pump provides pressure to hydraulic lines that connect to the steering rack. The rotary valve uses driver input to determine which side of the steering rack to send hydraulic fluid to. The rack has a piston inside that moves in the direction that high pressure fluid is applied. Finally, the hydraulic fluid completes the circuit back to the reservoir to be cycled around again.

Ha ha ha ha, I finally understand how this mechanism works. I always wondered how the power assist knew when to stop, ie how to prevent pressure assist from steering beyond where the driver wants to go. It's all about that little torsion bar. As soon as the steering wheel is released, the torsion bar springs the holes back to a neutral position so no more pressure goes to the side you're turning towards. Genius.

  • @speedkar99

Yes torsion bar backs to neutral position but how it is turned when moving? is there a clutch like system ? if released how the gripping is over? i understand the mechanism but i wonder the details.

@@juvenildr it puts pressure on the side of the steering that you want to turn it, it wont turn the rack by itself, it just puts pressure there to help you turn the steering easier.

Lovely video, I just want to ask, can the pinion gear make the steering to be hard of stiff, I use Mitsubishi Montero 2004 limited and the steering is stiff, we have changed the power steering pump still stiff, the mechanic said it is the steering rack pinion that is faulty, can the steering rack or pinion make the steering to stiff. And there are no leak on the rack at all.

Thanks for your educational video. Could you help me by identifying a noise from the pump. It´s been replaced by a used 71000 km pump. The same noise of high strain state to pump persists. It appears when not turning. When turning the wheel, the noise changes loader and quieter and it gets a little stuck at high sound parts. It happens more when the system in cold and makes no noise at all when warm. The noise returns after shutting down for a few minuts. No leaks. Fluids are new. The left front wheel was replaced because of rim damage, and same wheel´s control control rod´s end part was replaced. Perhaps the new pump was damaged due to lack of bleeding as it was changed by the mechanic? Or is the center rod bad? Chevrolet Matiz 2005 1.0 L has no electric motors in the steering column.

If you blow piston with low pressure air there will be allot of blow-by the rack piston hard seal ring . Fluid pressure expands the seals I suppose to a tighter clearance.
