Let me give you a wee bit of inside info. Back in the 1970s, those were geriatric wards numbered E5, E6, E7, E8, G9 and G10. As well as the glass corridors, you could get from one to the other through doors with two knobs of the round screw type that turned in opposite directions - one of which was near the top of the door, so that patients couldn't get out. The E-prefixed wards were for elderly patients; I think the G stood for general - which would have been mainly long term middle-aged patients who were often free to leave their wards during the day. Some of the male patients had little jobs - maybe helping the gardeners tend the grounds, or in the joiners workshop. (In earlier days there had also been a farm - it was down at the bottom of the hill, on the far side of the road). Female patients may have worked in the laundry or sewing room; or even in those geriatric wards - basically cleaning up shit... The curving corridors went up to the admin building, behind which was the main hall, which was used for films, dances, church services and the like. Other wards also connected to these - those numbered 1 and 2 occupied the two floors to the left of the slope you came down on your way out - they were for more challenging psychogeriatric patients. Opposite that was the intensive care unit - in the detached block and numbered 4 - presumably 3 must have been the lower floor at one time, but by then there was no ward 3. This was usually locked and its patients would be moved around from room to room on mass, because while some of them also went out to work, others had to be constantly monitored by staff. There were iron shutter gates at the foot of the boxed-in stairs, so that nobody could get onto the other floor. It also had "time-out" rooms, which were secure empty rooms that difficult patients could be locked in for a few hours. The windows were covered in these - elsewhere they raise only three or four inches, so that nobody could climb out. Ward 4 remained in use until the end of 2017 - it is now housed in one of the new buildings at the other side of the hospital. It continues to take patients from all over Fife and occasionally Edinburgh or Dundee, if all of the intensive care beds there are occupied and nobody can be moved elsewhere - it also takes patients from the courts and occasionally from other wards. In the new unit they have far more freedom and comfort that the old ward 4 - there are even enclosed gardens where they can get fresh air and possibly smoke. Back inside, the pharmacy was accessed through ward 10. On the other side of the long corridor was the Occupational Therapy (OT) Department. Here, patients allowed off their wards could do things like art and crafts. The sewing room was above it I think; and there was a library somewhere near there too. The Central Kitchens were to the other side of that curving corridor - above which was another psychogeriatric ward, 16. I think there was also a link to ward 14, which was for rehabilitation. That's all the Victorian buildings. The things you said were really old fashioned hoovers are actually floor polishers by the way - each ward had a domestic, and there were others too, to do the communal areas. Hard though it might be to imagine now, everything was kept absolutely spotless - the lino on those corridor floors absolutely shone, from decades of sweeping, scrubbing, mopping and polishing. I guess it was probably done by hand in earlier days - and maybe patients got roped into that too!

Where is this place it’s amazing and all the history behind it too
As a former patient of many years its really strange now too see what we now call the old part of the hospital ... First time I have seen it covered by anyone online .. . Thanks for the video
This video proves that urban exploration is so much different and far more respectful than the idiots that go in and vandalise or steal. It's about experiencing and documenting a glimpse into the past, through architecture and belongings left behind by individuals who worked or lived in those places.
Just let folk know this place isn't abandoned there are still 8 active wards, the rest of the site has been mostly left to disuse.
Really enjoyed your video, nice to see natural deterioration of closed down Hospital not helped along by vandalism ,keep up the good work.
Love the cinematography and think the soundtrack is very appropriate. I particularly like your use of voice-over. I think the vacuum cleaners you saw were actually floor polishers. They looked in quite good condition too despite their age. Great video and well done for your perserverance in getting there! 😀
I have watched a lot of your videos and the music you use really fits the mood well.
Hey man cool video guys . Very well put together

They're rotary floor buffers, used in conjuction with wax for polishing up lino/rubber flooring.
Really enjoyed the video. You're spot on regarding vandals, they absolutely ruin this experience of exploration for the rest of us. We are just back from one in Ayrshire & although from the outside it looked great, the inside was wrecked & torn to pieces by vandals, so frustrating. If you're in Scotland guys, we can guide you to one or two places you might not know of, give me a shout and we'll arrange something 👍
Filmed so well. Especially the stills you take. So sad that people lived in curtained off compartments, almost like they were treated in hospital conditions. Thank goodness we are moving forward now. Institutional is the worst kind of environment for anyone.

Wow what an amazing building g. All left to care in the community now. :/
nice one
Great job ,great music .like to no what music it was..
That Celtic memorabilia is mad, makes you wonder where these people are now...
Psychiatric beds are now in care in the community, and acute beds are less in number too! Many psychiatric hospitals are now left decaying away! By the time they are sold with plans available for housing etc. they are demolished, with many Victorian architecture lost! The nursing is supplied with Community Care Psychiatric Nurses, who do their best to ensure that patients are cared for! My husband suffered from Bi-polar disorder, and had treatment over many years at home. When he was acutely ill, his medication was often doubled, which caused his vital organs to deteriorate and he ended up medically ill as well! On one occasion they could not find a bed for him, and he ended up 50 miles away! I am a retired nurse myself, and luckily I was there to care for him, with contact to the community nurses! This is just my own opinion, but they took away too much from the services, and cannot offer acute care as there are just no beds available!
Does anyone know where this is me and my friend are looking to explore abandoned places. BTW love your video's

Visited today, place was very secure, a lot of windows were open but they only open a couple of inches, never mind, it was still enjoyable walking around the outside of the buildings.

This is stratheden hospital. there is still and active hospital near by that was built recently that houses heavily autistic people. my mum was gonna get a job helping them but it was a bit too much for her. This building is the old building. keep in mind you are trespassing on the grounds of an active facility when doing this as the hospital is still open, just not this building. If you still wanna find it it's just outside the main town of cupar in Fife. watch for asbestos, happy urbexing.
Sadly over the years vandals and light fingered people have damaged or stolen a lot from here, when it became a popular place seen on a lot of social media
Excellent Vid, would be nice if it was a bit longer,
Something like that would never exist in the US. Too many scumbags around here who would vandalize or set fires!

B. B. The only reason this place has lasted is due to the working part of the hospital. If it wasn’t for the part of the hospital that’s still open then this place would have been well and truly vandalised and eventually burnt our. However, lately there has been quite a bit of vandalism after people started sharing the hospital’s location on various Facebook pages. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit this place shortly after it closed when it was still in good condition and had much more equipment to see. Sadly, we live in a world where if something is left for even a short amount of time then someone is going to vandalise it, burn it or strip it for scrap metal. It’s my understanding that this place (the closed and open parts of the complex) is to go up for redevelopment soon.
At least there are beautiful little rabbits in the gardens ! What a shame to see so large houses abandonned when we know lot of people are homeless !!!
Wow - I hadn't realised it had had decayed so much inside these wards - all of which were still very much in use when I first became familiar with them in the late 1970s. These mainly housed elderly patients at that time - the adult wards being mainly concentrated within the newer buildings towards the "open" side of the hospital that you describe - though many of their patients would be seen around the corridors, using facilities such as the Occupational Therapy Department, Library and the Main Hall. The large detached building at the start of the film was the Nurses' Home; and when you pan round to the left while standing in that car park, the building that comes into view was until just a couple of years ago the Intensive Care Unit.
That is odd, for an Asylum, no doors separating other just cutains! Is that safe? I imagine the occupants were not violent, to themselves or staff members. Well Frame 7:40 explains, why no doors. They were well sedated, and controlled with antipsychotics.

What you see was a stage in de-institutionalisation, when open dormitories were divided up, to separate the beds with wardrobes (so people could have more personal property) and later on partitions so that they would have some privacy. The partitions did not reach the ceiling, for the sake of ventilation and fire safety in the days when patients smoked indoors. Dividing wards or villas up reduced the number of beds.
Such a waste of a building, in another 20 years it will look different altogether, good to see it now though
Where is the location of this video???
Where is this?
The birds got trapped in there. Either they couldn't find their way back out, or they made their way in from an opening that subsequently closed (window/door left open then closed or blown shut). Someone might have left a door/window open on their way in, but then closed it on their way out, sealing the birds in.
Been there
That’ll end up being converted into luxury apartments like most other mental hospitals. No way would I want one 😬😬😬
Asbestos!! That could be the problem!
The grounds are kept up-grass mowed. I wonder why the power was left on?
@bluecanary1note
5 жыл бұрын
The power was left on because it is NOT abandoned. These particular wings of the hospital are no longer used for patients but Stratheden is a functioning hospital. Anyone who breaks in to make sensational videos without permission is breaking the law and showing disrespect for patients and staff.
Can you make a guide to finding these places?

Stratheden asylum is good like
they were not supposed to be PUNISHMENT CENTRES, but the staff hated them. ASYLUM or SANCTUARY?
I recycle disabilities related equipment and say many items which would be used today by those of us needing them. I use an electric wheelchair and many other types of equipment I saw and know the cost of just one piece I saw would be thousands of dollars even second hand. They should at the least offer them free to those in your country needing them, stay safe!
@cjam191

We have a free health care. If someone needs hoists etc they are given them free of charge. We don't believe someone should pay for a vital piece of equipment that will give someone their independence for daily activities of living.
@faithlesshound5621
4 жыл бұрын
I suppose the reason is, when a hospital downsizes or closes, that organisation has no need elsewhere for the beds and equipment and so nobody sees the need to transfer them to an expensive warehouse. They never seem to move usable equipment to one building from which things could be retrieved. A bit like when people die alone, often their furniture is thrown into a skip as rubbish rather than sold. The public sector does not hold closing down sales like shops would. Often the final closure is brought forward to save money, and the last few staff may be sad about imminent unemployment, if they are not retiring early. Hence the Marie Celeste appearance of some sites - not this one however.

We are aware of that as we stated in the video that the site is part live. However, the wings we explore in the documentary have clearly been disused/vacant/abandoned for a number of years..just look at the decay. We understand the concern but no serious laws were broken as we didn’t break in to gain entry to the site, we didn’t steal and we didn’t vandalise.
