Abandoned Mansion - SCOTLAND

Was time to the hit the Scottish highlands to an abandoned mansion then onto another location in which we got lost, well i got us lost i took the wrong road being on the wrong side of the water, luckily we had a ferry to take us and the cars across, but by the time we got to the other location it was dark, so we left it for another day, everyone just blame Mark for this! lol

I was in here a couple of times as a child; before it started to fall down. A folk music concert in the big room. It was really nice back then, three decades ago. It's surprising how quickly things deteriorate once the weather gets in. The military signage is from the 1940s when it was used as a commando training camp (as were many of the big houses around there).

I stayed here in the 1960s. I was in the Scouts, and we came for our summer camp as guests of Mrs Cameron-Head. On one occasion we stayed in one of the huts used by the commandos during the war. I well remember the iron beds with straw mattresses. On another occasion we stayed in the house itself. It was pretty tatty even then. I remember canoeing on the sea loch, and fishing for trout in the river. Sad to see it like this. This was a staunchly Catholic family, hence the religious figures. I seem to remember going to the chapel within the house. Sad to see it like this.

So very sad indeed! It must have been amazing in its heyday - bustling with the energy and warmth of family, friends, guests and servants. But family had to leave to earn a living, and over the years it dwindles .. finances too .. and after passing the death duties would scupper any hope of rescue. I’m glad you got to see it before its full decline.

This sad mansion is very important historically as one of the very first commando training bases during ww2. HQ staff were in the building and the men slept either in the building or out in huts and tents in the grounds or the fields south of the stream. There was unarmed combat training in the garden , canoeing and water based action including marine assault with boats and there was a Dukw. This continued throughout the cold war. They hiked all over the hills inland . The Heroes of Telemark probably trained there. In the 1970's the family who owned it all still lived in the house , and if you were a roman catholic trooper (note the statues and crucifixes etc left in the house) you may have been given tea and cake one evening , while your mates were eating compo rations in less salubrious surroundings. With Arisaig house this place did a lot to free the world from the Nazis and Japanese and stand up for democracy later. It is sad to see the family artifacts and photos apparently abandoned. The museum at Arisaig might be interested in rescuing some bits, or the imperial war museum. The farmers in the area tended to speak Gallic as a first language. I thought they were germans at first until someone explained.

@@borisacat9182 I understand the difference between a Scotsman and an Englishman. But your capital is London and Scotland is not an independent country. You can of course call all this the United Kingdom. Trump recently announced that Hitler was defeated by America and Britain. And Russia, as it were, did not participate. If Britain had a chance, Britain would rather watch Hitler defeat Russia. But things went wrong and Britain had to intervene. But as soon as the war ended, in the same 1945 Churchill wanted to attack Russia in alliance with the remnants of German troops. Therefore, the words about saving the world and democracy look just funny to me. I use google translate, trying to choose simple expressions, in the hope that at least part of the meaning of my words will be clear.

Fantastic find ! From the 'labeled' doors with "titles" ( i.e. Commander, Secretary, & WRNS ) I'm assuming this was perhaps the headquarters, until the Women's Royal Naval Service was amalgamated into the Royal Navy. Such a shame to have just been walked away from, and left to mold, decay and become unrepairable. A place like this with such history . should have certainly been saved. If I could afford such a wondrous abode I would certainly emigrate and renovate this mansion back to its glory. I imagine it's grounds would have been beautiful to view also, as there is a Camperdown Elm on the right side of the building. These Elms are rare to be seen, and with it being a key landscape figure, the rest of the gardens and grounds surrounding the perimeter must have bee next to exquisite!!

I won't name it but I have know this house since I was a young child. It has a rich & proud history and was visited and lived in by many interesting & notable characters - F&S (of WW2 fame), Mrs C-H, Miss B M, etc. The last time I was inside was in the early 2000's and it was in a bad way even then but as you can see, the appearance of the front of the house & the tended front lawn belie the true state within. There was another large house nearby which was also in a bad way but has thankfully been fully restored, so I can only hope that the future of this house will be the same.

It was like the movie Titanic with Kate Winslet at the very end you see the ship down at the bottom of the ocean, broken, mangled and all the beauty gone and then through Hollywood magic, the chairs are out on the beautiful wooden deck, young man opens the door and she makes her way to the beautiful stairway where Leo is waiting for her. Some times you find the information about the place your at by the photographs and newspaper clippings that are still around. It's a beautiful place, and it makes me sad that another part of human history is crumbling to the ground. At least you have it on camera so part of it is preserved for history.

@@ExploringwithAlec Thanks so much for your reply because it means that you are listening to your fans! I truly get what your saying; however, you have to keep in mind that you have an international audience, some young and old like me who love watching your videos. In addition, you all are thorough and humorous, which many live about you and you have to keep all of these in mind when creating these videos that are seen internationally. A former hunting lodge. When it was the hunting season the family who owned a place like this would occupy it for a few weeks and then it would sit empty with a just a few staff for the rest of the year. Many of these old hunting lodges became hotels when the families that owned them started to lose their wealth but those places that were well off the tourist trail couldn't find a buyer so would be left to decay.

Great explores ta for sharing BUT - smoking a VERY bad idea in such places surely? Also (from experience!) - wearing trainers and no masks will definitely result in a rusty nail in someones foot and breathing lots of mould spores and asbestos dust. Seriously - more care needed, hope you dont mind me saying so. Also some commentary/ research re buildings history etc would make your channel much more interesting. As said, thanks for sharing your adventures. Ps wht suggest this explore is at the stretch of road at the start?!

A little history on the mansion perhaps would have been nice. Walk slower, point out and linger on beautiful pieces of furniture, pick up some photos and read the names...if that is permitted. Take more time and know that we at home really love to see and hear details! Some houses are almost too large for one video. Those of us who click on this truly enjoy these old, long forgotten homes which at some time burst with life, saw births and deaths. So linger some and talk to us what you see....and thank you! Thank you very much!

One of my friends emigrated from this land of rocks and stumps, and has been in Canada for about 10 years. I support the great Scots and have seen some of the views from the castles, and it's not really rocks and stumps, but it was pretty nasty after a few long wars long ago. It's really quite different from then. Some of the Kings could have chosen a better spot for weather, however. Lol. Some nasty seas in winter, I hear. Same here along the west coast of the island. There's a ship graveyard. Anyway, you are mighty brave to even go up the stairs in that place. It looked like this whole place wasn't going to stay up much longer.

It is seen that their owners were very rich people, but not for all the gold in the world could they live in such desolate places. Yes, very nice to visit but not to live. I imagine the harsh winters of Scotland there isolated from everything for perhaps months.

Ooft now that some size of gaff. From other comments that I’ve read looks like it’s been some military place , however there appears to be a strong religious orientation. Some really interesting artefacts and architecture. In its latter years looks like it’s been left to neglect and decay , which is such a shame as it could have been put to good use. However the upkeep on these buildings must have cost a few bob 🧐
