    Was honestly surprised to see some DSBM on here. It's a horribly underappreciated genre that provides nigh unparalleled catharsis. Seriously, go check out the album Dipsomania by Psychonaut 4. It's full of haunting melodies, some of the most emotionally charged shrieks (I've got no other word for it) that I've ever heard, and just creates this beautiful, melancholy atmosphere that's great for working your shit out in.

    One band really worth checking out is Boris. Their discography is massive and explores many genres such a jpop, punk, noise and hard rock but the core of their sound is huge sludgy riffs and walls of feedback interspersed with soft clean interludes with lots of spaced out guitar melodies. I also include anything that could be described as 'blackgaze' as post metal e.g. alcest, deafheaven, ghost bath. Also, also, I can hear fans of funeral doom getting real mad at the claim that drone metal is the slowest subgenre.

    I certainly like that more people are talking about Post Metal since for me it has what metal lacked in past decades that were filled with monetary desires (which is normal but it can corruptive for the creativity) and years fueled by having fun time with groupies and crap like that, and that is integrity. On the sonic side even tho Tool is one of my favorite bands i really don't relate them to Post Metal even tho they share certain traits with the bands that i do put into Post Metal. They are very progressive,tribal, psychedelic feel and pretentiousness (most of the progressive stuff is, there is no shame in that and it is probably the reason why im attracted to that music) however they lack the intensity, dark atmosphere, sludge and doom feel and those are characteristics that are most important for the genre in my honest opinion. As for Deftones, for me they aren't even up for debate to be in the genre, they are a great band however they lack even more of the things that i mentioned in the Tool part. Agalloch and the rest of the phenomenal progressive/folk black metal bands deserve their own genere i feel. For me Neurosis is the Pinnacle of what Post-Metal should be followed by Isis and Cult of Luna. However you can debate that maybe the name Post-Metal inherently means that these bands refused to bring cliches from the Metal and probably one of the things that is the most cliche are the rough vocals. So maybe you can say that the Bands like Russian Circles and Pelican that are instrumental bands, represent what Post-Metal actually is in its purest form even tho Neurosis singlehandedly created the genre.

    Post metal is how I got into metal. I didn't even know it, but the second I heard bands like Jakob, and Russian circles, I was hooked. I've heard the classic stuff, but post metal was my first journey into the complicated mess that is metal. I think I love it because it creates soundscapes to lose yourself in. Black metal gets repetitive, but post metal has this feeling of as you said, clarity. It doesn't feel like anxiety like black metal does. I explained to a friend how I'd discovered a Limp Bizkit song that I didn't think was unequivocal shite, and he politely suggested that I'd get my head checked. On a more serious note, I'd like to recommend the band Ulcerate. They mix post-metal with technical death metal, resulting in a sound that is both cataclysmic, but also fast-paced and unbelievably dense. I'd especially recommend their 2009 release _Everything is Fire_ - generally considered their greatest work so far.

  • @MurzMKII
    @MurzMKII Жыл бұрын

    Hey, I enjoyed the video! I was looking up information on this genre after enjoying the most recent Cult of Luna album (which was my first time listening to them, btw.) Stuff like this is very helpful to me, as I've recently been trying to learning more about the various sub-genres of metal. I listened to a lot of popular metalcore, classic thrash, and prog metal when I was in high school (about a decade ago) but have only touched a little bit of metal between back then and earlier this year (when I decided I was going to dive in deeper to the massive world of metal that I only heard in passing previously.) However, I have listened to a ton of Post-Hardcore and I was really taken aback by you saying that Post-Hardcore was an offshoot of Post-Rock. I think there's a fair amount of crossover and shared DNA in their early histories (most notably, Slint) but Post-Hardcore was primarily born out of pushing the boundaries of the 80s hardcore punk scene and trying to take the sound in a more varied and artistic direction. I think both Post-Hardcore and Post-Rock both sought to push boundaries and drew inspiration from No Wave, Noise Rock, and Experimental Rock, but early Post-Hardcore has a much more tangible relation to Hardcore Punk (and especially the DC scene) than most of Post-Rock, (at least to my knowledge.) So with that in mind, Post-Hardcore obviously bears a similarity to Metalcore because they share a major common ancestor in Hardcore Punk. Plus, throughout the evolution of Post-Hardcore, there's plenty of Metal influences and stylings that tend to show up. Mathcore immediately comes to mind for me (although I've heard some people say Mathcore isn't metal, but is strictly a more extreme version of Post-Hardcore.) There's also some bands that are pretty firmly in the Post-Hardcore category like Thrice, but tracks like "Deadbolt" or "The Earth Will Shake" have unmistakable influences from more classic metal genres. I honestly interpreted the "Metalcore" genre label to refer to a combination of the Post-Hardcore and Metal in reference to a lot of the Emo-flavored metal bands of the late 2000's before I had been exposed to the more "Metallic Hardcore" sound. I recognize that this is very nitpick-y on my part, you probably said less than 5 sentences related to post-hardcore in the video and I know that wasn't really the point at all. I just wanted to share an alternative perspective to that term, specifically. If you have some info or perspective that I'm totally lacking there, I'm super open to that, too. Keep up the good work!

    hey man I think you got things mixed up at the very core of it all, and ended up not getting the Post-Metal and Post-Rock concept right this style of calm and other loud moments as you showed in the example of Slint is actually Post-Hardcore, it is necessary to understand that in addition to being one of the pioneers of Post-Rock, Slint is also an essential part of the Post-Hardcore scene, and Post- Hardcore is not a branch of Post-Rock, in fact it is older than Post-Rock, you end up confusing several Alt Metal bands with more atmospheric elements exactly because Alt Metal has a lot of influence from Post-Hardcore, Deftones for example, including actually the more atmospheric elements at the beginning of Deftones and actually the result of influences from Shoegaze and Dream Pop which, because they also focus a lot on atmosphere and texture, can end up confusing Post-Rock beginners, only later Deftones started to really take on elements from Post -Rock Post-Rock is a lighter and calmer subgenre, characteristic for giving more focus to the atmosphere and texture and moving away from traditional elements of Rock music, exemplifying not only the influence of Slowcore and even Psychedelia but also of styles outside of Rock such as Jazz, Ambient, Dub and etc. Post-Metal just takes this proposal and adapts it to a metallic sound, not necessarily Doom or Sludge, Post-Metal is its own genre of Metal with Post-Rock, and that's where the Atmospheric Sludge comes from when you put Post-Metal contact Sludge Tool is not really Post-Metal, it's just Alt Prog Metal, and it's... Limp Bizkit, Chevelle and Mastodon are definitely not Post-Metal

    Any other music I should check out that's similar to the "alternative + post metal" examples? Love that sound with half time beats and really full, melancholy sludgy(? Don't know if I'm using that word right) chords and soaring vocals. It kind of reminds me of Duster, and a little bit of Slowdive. Some crossover with shoegaze and emo?

    Uh maybe. I dunno. It could just be personal bias, but I love Prog Metal and could never really get into Tool. Every time I tell someone I like Prog Metal, they say "oh like Tool". But its never had the same vibe to me. Maybe Prog Rock but not Prog Metal? Maybe a pedantic distinction, considering they obviously have metal in their sound. But I don't know why else I wouldn't dig them, because they aren't a bad band.

    As for what makes Post Metal. The quiet then loud thing is a big part. From Tool to Deftones to Austere, the singing is marginally above whispering, but then the guitars are blaring in contrast. Another thing is the differentiated instrumentation. They stick out from one another. It almost sounds like a band recording their parts separately then mashing them together just slightly off, rather than playing as a unit like a band does live. Does that help?

    My two cents: Neurosis, ISIS, Swans etc may have been experimental, but that is the origin of post-metal, much like post-rock came from bands repeating specific elements within the music of experimental bands like Godspeed. I also think you could have mentioned post-black metal bands like Mgla, Der Weg Einer Freheit, Liturgy etc, that don't mix in sludge like Cult of Luna or atmospheric black metal like Agalloch. Also, the combination of post-metal and post-punk/post-hardcore could have been mentioned, with bands like Amenra and Oathbreaker.

    100% agreed. The pinnacle bands of a sub-genre shouldn't be those that are the most mediocre version of the genre. They should be the ones that embody the genre while standing out in quality and influence. Neurosis, Isis and Cult of Luna are THE ultimate post-metal bands and always have been.

I just like to think of Sunn O)))'s sound as a representation of an extreme dissociative or psychedelic experience, when there's nothing in the material world to latch on to.
