Explaining the "Post" Genres - What is POST ______?

PUNK REVOLUTION NOW!!!!!!
Post-rock, post-punk, post-hardcore, post-metal, post-grunge, post-industrial, post-bop, WTF? SO MANY DIFFERENT POST-GENRES!!! It's confusing but interesting, so I thought I'd explain a bit how to wrap your head around some of these genres.

Maybe I'll take the bullet and explain Post-Industrial: Post-Industrial is a genre that takes the attitude and atmospheres from Industrial Music (much of it using either electroacoustic instruments, or prepared one), and experimenting with the form to take it to other contexts, such as House music, Techno, Post-Punk, Darkwave and etc. TL;DR: Industrial music for post-ironic teens

For me a post genre is like cooking using the same signature ingredients of a genre, but doing it in a different way that the result ends up being something different, but you still can recognize the original ingredients.

So at this moment, big fan of postrock and postpunk. To me it feels like these genres are made by artists who make the music for theirselves. I stole this explanation from a podcast episode about jazz. These musicians didn't have anything else in their lives and they played jazz for theirselves. The audience, they just happened to be there. Could be similar for these genres that are talked about in this video. I went to see MONO a couple months back and that band plays over 150 shows in a year. In the venue in the Netherlands, they were booked for the smaller concert hall and sadly it wasn't sold out. But, the people who did show up were heavily impressed and some very emotional too. I guess it's just that as a popmusician your act is always fine tuned by the opinions of others. I think it was Steven Albini who said that he would always just keep the authenticity of the band untouched and just trying to make the band sound as good as possible instead of forcing his own creative ideas, like the big label producers would tend to do.

Post Hardcore is the hardest genre to define. I'm still not sure if a listen to it or not. I've listened to Silverstein for the entirety of their career and they are supposed to be considered Post Hardcore. But when a hear definitions of Post Hardcore is doesn't make sense to me. It doesn't help that their sound evolved a lot in 22 years.

I love your enthusiasm and disagree with some of the details of your definition of post-hardcore. For many, many years, bands labeled Hardcore WERE allowed to be more complicated. Music that could have otherwise been called “metal” or even “prog-metal” stuck to the label of hardcore because of the socio-political DIY values and commitment to the underground scene. This was the essence of hardcore in the 1990s! Post-hardcore requires legitimate prior participation in the DIY hardcore scene, otherwise is just about the same thing as your definition of post-rock, but is broader in that it also included mellow indie-rock bands who wanted to clarify their attachment to the previously mentioned music scene. Metal-core is NOT post-hardcore! And while Minutemen & Husker Du might loosely fit the definition, they were still too punk and too aggressive. The term didn’t start showing up until maybe the fifth Fugazi album. Repeater by Fugazi is still way too punk to be post-hardcore as well.
