Porsche Cayman GTS - Long Term Review #1 - Everyday Driver

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

While waiting impatiently for his M2 order, Paul went and bought a Cayman GTS. Todd is just as boggled as you are. So, alongside the much cheaper Long Term FR-S, the guys go for a first drive and talk about why Paul bought the GTS, and if he made the right choice.

    The GTS is aesthetically near-perfect in motion. It looks fast, sleek, and purpose-built without as much bravado as finesse. You really can't mind being passed by one on the street. It's about as upsetting as finding a 20 dollar bill.

    Congrats Paul! I just bought a 2014 base cayman manual. I had all the same questions going on in my head, "what am I doing, Is this worth what I am spending?" Every time I start it up and go for I drive, it is also an event and I quickly forget my buyers remorse too! Beautiful GTS, have fun!

    The 981 Cayman S is the vehicle best purchase I've ever made, hands down. What's even better is I tracked down a '14 981 S heavily optioned including Sports Chrono, PDK, PTV, Sports Exhaust, PASM, and even Carbon Ceramic Brakes (PCCB) for less than $60k & only 8k miles. It has more options than most GTS models I see & the 15hp difference is unnoticeable. Congrats on the GTS, you're going to have a smile on your face for a long time.

    Great choice! My 981 Cayman S ecu was remapped to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km in 3.89sec. Hair-trigger throttle response pulling like the clappers from 3000rpm to redline with no flat spot. Stock air filters and exhaust manifolds. A real beast of a sports car which I'll never sell.

    Cayman has definitely evolved into the more serious, discerning drivers car than the 911, and since most Cayman GTS which are decently optioned cost $85-95k, you can't even say it's the 'poor mans Porsche' anymore. That title goes to the Macan (also a very good car in its own right).

  • @anthonyjaswinski5732

    @anthonyjaswinski5732

    +Kayone73 agreed. Apparently, Porsche engineers call it their favorite drive because of the near perfect weight balance

  • @edkwon

    @edkwon

    8 жыл бұрын

    Anthony Jaswinski The result of that near perfect weight balance and neutral handling is you can push that car towards the edge of grip and it'll communicate to you early and in small steps when it starts to lose grip and slide, in a safe, fun and controllable way. The problem with the modern 911 is technology gives it near limitless grip until it hits the edge, and then it'll spin out on you.

  • @anthonyjaswinski5732

    @anthonyjaswinski5732

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Kayone73 good point, buyers, lulled into the brand, tend to feel the car will control all situations, without research or understanding of the weight scenarios for such a powerful car. I guess those with money want track without the time

    Sold my 981 gts for 145k, bought a 2nd hand 718 turbo 4 for 115k. Put 25k of upgrades with stage 2 and now have a Porsche that out performs a 911 gt3 over the quarter mile. Jesus thats alot of bang for the buck!! Loved the sound of my 981 but the 982 sound is not bad at all & has really grown on me. Performance incomparable in every way. Just more usable power more of the time. I also recently did a 1000k road trip in it and avg 5.8l / 100k / around 39miles to the gallon! Incredible performance numbers.

    Had one of the first deliveries of the CGTS, with the intention of it being my forever (50-year) car. Never truly... fell in love with it. I *liked* it, but never *loved* it. It is a very comprehensive and competent package, and surprisingly good when it has to be "just a car". One of the reasons I never fell in love with it (coming from a Miata for the previous 8 years) was something I immediately noticed with this one -- PDK. I decided to "embrace the future", eschewing the manuals I've always had. Brilliant when you were caning it, brilliant in the few times I had to use it as a commuter car, but felt... like it didn't need me when I was just screwing around. Ended up with a Type 981 Boxster Spyder. Already put ~6000 miles on it in 9 months (only put 4400 on the CGTS in 14 months). Not only did I miss the manual, but the "occasional discomfort and anxiety" of having the top down -- particularly during the sub-freezing temperatures of northern New England in early December with the top down (because I always drive roadsters top down) while carving up desolate backroads in central Maine or in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Without question it'll be my forever car, because of it being more involving (and a bit more slidey). It'll have at least 8000 miles on it before it's a year old. I think the CGTS is still a great overall package, but for me it "would be better if it were a bit worse".

    I bought a cayman s with pdk,sport chrono, sport exhaust, pasm & other few options back in jan this year..first few days i was driving it around town was wondering if i made the right decision, but took it to smoky mountains and was so much fun eating up the mountain roads. Its the well balanced chasis, screaming flat six which loves to wind out and smart pdk which makes it one of the best sports car sensible money can buy. Congrats!

    I like the Porsche videos these guys make because they get what Porsches are all about. For those who don't get it, Porsche see the GTS brand as a combination of the GT cars (911 GT3) and the S cars (Carrera S, Cayman S). The cars are mechanically S cars with all the options ticked, but with an interior inspired by the GT cars to give the driver more of a race feel for the road, hence all the alcantara as found in the GT3. As with all their cars, Porsche give you a starting point and let you customise to you heart's (and wallet's) content. Porsche love to individualise their cars (as seen in the black exterior trim and smoked lenses which are exclusive to the GTS models) and the high residual values reflect the rarity of the spec of some of the cars. Cayman GTS is a fine choice and the tasteful interior options in this particular car make it a fantastic car to own and enjoy. Have fun guys!

    Congrats on a great decision. I don't think I'd even consider an M2 over this. I absolutely love the Cayman GTS. The Cayman is my favorite Porsche, due to its perfect balance. It's equally comfortable cruising on the interstate, a curvy back road, or burning up the track...a real jack of all trades. I'm hoping to purchase a used GTS in a few years. I hope the switch to 4 cylinders doesn't inflate 6 cylinder values too much. If I can't find a good deal on a GTS, I'll probably go with a newer 4 cylinder S because I'm really impressed with the new turbo engines as well.

    Paul, does your GTS have the Porsche Torque Vectoring option? I'm looking around at used GTS's and wondering where this should fall in my priorities. I do autocross my cars, so the lack of a limited slip differential worries me if I skipped PTV.

    No you don't need it. I have it as a technology fetish item, but I did a drive training at Porsche's training facility and I asked my instructor about PTV and he said no way you can tell a difference. So don't beat yourself up over it. A Porsche Works driver could barely squeeze one or two seconds out over the S model on the 23Km Nürburg Ring with the GTS for the official Ring time - don't beat yourself up over "missing" PTV.

    I like the cayman, I never be able to own one, but still love it. And you bought it in the RIGHT colour! For em a base cayman with the smallest engine would be enough, I don,t care about power and speed. have fun!

    this is the best car to buy. NA with my favourite PDK that makes the car soo special. We can use it as a daily drive. GT4(NA with sweet manual gear box) is a another good option but gt4 is a very track oriented car. both are the best options

    This is the one I'd go for also, out of all the Cayman models. I feel like it's the most usable every day and not as stiff/hardcore as a GT4 (Obviously), which is almost a dedicated track car, but it seems like a GTS can still hold its own on a track day. Also this is the last one that's naturally aspirated, which I prefer to the newer turbo model..plus you have the PDK, which I would choose any day of the week over a manual. I just don't care for manual cars, never have and I never will.

    Todd since you compared this to the FRS for driving characteristics,in regards to road work only- wouldn't that 944 turbo with those porsche option upgraded sway bars the owner was going to install and like tires be more fun and engaging to drive due to it's perfect balance and not always being so stuck to the ground at road speeds thus allowing it to move around and slide a little, like the FRS .Would love to hear your thoughts on that and how the steering feel compared between these two as the GTS's steering has seemed to digress. Thanks for all your great vids! For us folks that don't track their cars it just seems that some of these amazing new cars like the GTS we'll never be able to experience that percentage of the fun these cars have to offer.

    Your thoughts and opinions as to why you did not choose the Shelby GT350? Perhaps the pros and cons if possible. My wife and I have a long list of vehicles that we have been cross examining, and both the Cayman GTS and the Shelby GT350/R are on that list. Besides the Lotus Evora, were there other cars that you cross-shopped? Was a pre-owned Jaguar F-Type on that list as well? I have entertained the idea of the BMW M2, however I heard it has an angled seating arrangement which leads me to believe it is setup like the Ford Focus with its eleven o'clock seating position. Do you find that to be true with the BMW M2? We have yet to seek one out for a personal assessment. As always, we enjoy all your videos and frequently watch them together over dinner. Sorry for the plethora of questions, but it's nice to see educated professionals who clearly have a passion for the automotive world. Keep up the great work my friends.

    +1. .. Agreed, the 981 Boxster/Cayman series is a gem, an MVP of sport coupes. .. Question; Please characterize the elevation effect on the 3.4l Cayman GTS w/6sp manual? .. Followed your suit waiting on delivery of a 1-owner, '15 Cayman S w/PDK, PASM, PTV, S. Crono, 20" Carrera wheels, Full Leather, etc. Domiciled in nearby Vail, Colorado elev., 8,200ft,,, our '98 Carrera 2S (993) specific output sucks wind. .. The 993's spunky drive character takes a big hit, even at Denver's 5280ft elevation. .. Maybe the PDK's shorter gearing masquerades the elevation/specific output deficit effect? .. Herr Paul, what say you? Cheers, M/S

    In terms of long term maintenance for this car would it be cheaper to get it in PDK rather than manual ? In manual you'd have to change the clutch and because it's a mid-engine it wouldn't be cheap. Am I right?

    Replacing the clutch is expensive, but replacing the 2 PDK clutches is much much more expensive. The dealer wanted around 2000€ to replace the clutches on my moms Audi A3 DSG and the problem is you can't do it yourself, because you need special tools. Still especially Porsche clutches are made to last and take lots of launches.

    With routine maintenance yeah the PDK would be cheaper but the PDK gearbox oil has to be changed after 50k miles or something so it's a while but anything could go wrong with DCT cars.

    Envious I am. I've always thought the Cayman looked just hair better proportioned than the newer 911's. As such, I want badly! Congratulations on the purchase, Paul!! Now we're fighting.

    I drove a 2015 Boxster. 2.7 Base car with 2 options the PDK and the sports exhaust. It was just over twice the price of my BRZ. It was magic. The sound the feel of the car was amazing. It is 3 times the car the BRZ is.

    elms350z The BRZ is a wonderful car. It simply is not on the same level as the Boxster. Even the driving position is better in the Boxster. That is a strong suite of the BRZ. That beautiful Porsche h6 has no equal.

    I have PASM on an '07 CS. Haven't heard of many differences between 987 and 981 tuning, so comparison is probably close. I've never driven a non-PASM Cayman so I can't compare that, though some people have said it provides a slightly artificial suspension feel. Feels great to me in standard mode, as smooth on most roads as my SUV or any Honda I've owned, but still every bit as responsive as I need. Can't use the sport setting around town without chipping a tooth, but in the mountains it's just magic. In that environment I can forget it's on, except that it's just so stable in every type of corner and the steering turn in is even slightly quicker and more direct - not sure if that's just because of the suspension being tighter or if there's a varying ratio. I think it's a great option.

    How is the engine-power difference between the Cayman GTS and the M2? Feels the Cayman less powerful by full accelerating? I mean this Cayman got ~ 100 Nm less than the M2. And whats about the Sound difference between GTS and M2? Greets from Germany
