The Carrera T is probably the closest in spirit to the original 911. But Porsche is never about value when it comes to trying to do special editions. The 911 S/T has less stuff that the GT3 Touring (excepr for nicer colors and trim) but costs $100k more.

As much as I admire the new S/T, it’s a reminder that the huge advances in engineering and technology have left us with a different aesthetic. The original 901/911, and Jaguar and Ferrari sports cars of that era, are elegant. Modern cars are purposeful and muscular, but they are somehow less beautiful. On a track, the 911 S/T is the only choice here, but in any other setting the 901 is the important and arguably more interesting car.

That was well put together, thank you. Pity no one can get a S/T, garage queens! Owned 911s for 34years and much happy motoring. Makes my saying even more relevant, "trade miles for smiles". Didn't know that the smiley face was '63 too. Miles in a 911 gives you smiles!!

Porsche is trying to discourage that. First, all buyers are required to lease first stop flipping. Then there's an expectation this will have similar tactic to the 911R, where parts trickle down the 992.2 GT3 Touring. What Porsche did to intentionally screw over 911R flippers.

The 911 has grown into a grand touring car. I’ve been to a couple of Porsche track days, hopping in and out of 911s and Cayman/Boxsters. I think the Cayman/Boxster is closer to what a Porsche should be. If Porsche had to do the 911 over again, it would have a mid engine.

You're right. I have a 911 and a Cayman, the Cayman is the better driving car. The 911 is the better grand tourer. Happy I've got those options.

Good review, but required reading on the 911 is to read the definitive works of Paul Frère. The 901 / early 911 was very far from perfect and this can be seen in modern historic racing where Lotus Elans run rings around 911s even on fast circuits (about 1.5 seconds a km faster) and MGBs are within tenths of a second. Paul Frère recounts (amongst other things), the huge problems at the factory setting up the geometry and the need to add kilos of weight to the front bumper to reassure the first customers... The ST is nicely put together but the car is too obese for sporty driving. As we know from a company that also produces SUVs, sales matter more than purity.

These two models share little more, than a silhouette and 3 digits. The whole ethos of the 911 has shifted dramatically. From pure fun, simplicity, compact dimensions and quirky as hell, to Porsche really embracing the supercar genre with outrageous power and styling that is bursting at the 911 seams. What’s even more interesting is the financial project, that is Porsche. Some of the highest margins in the industry and literal ‘alchemist marketing’ that allows them to charge so much more, for so much less.

Still way too heavy at 1380kg for the last of special 911 ICE only cars. Porsche should have gone back to their roots and been inspired by the iconic 550/718 spyders, the cars that made its name in the 1950s and which were less than 800kg weight. Posche should have produced a car weighing no more than 1000kg. Alpine did it and as Chapman said you give more power and it goes faster in a straight line; lose weight and it goes faster everywhere, including response.

I had a 1.5 MX-5 which weighed around 1000kg and it was great fun to drive quickly or slowly. You can't beat the feeling of lightness in a car and yer everyone else seems to be driving fat ugly SUV's???

It’s crazy that 901 has 130 horsepower total and the 911 ST has 130 horsepower per liter. I love the newer 911’s but the old ones are just more pure. I’d definitely take that 901 over the ST

This is the Porsche PR machine at work. The 901 should not be the point of comparison, but something more recent. Ie. a current 992 C2 or C4. An academic question given availability of the ST, but have they approved the product to justify the price?
