Porcupine Tree BERLIN sucked…

Literally same thing in Katowice, Poland. I ended up at the back of the venue with my ears plugged and then the sound was actually recognizable 😂 I have no idea what the sound engineers were thinking but that was quite unacceptable for a band of their caliber, especially considering Steven is such a sound perfectionist

@@ivanriverooo Yes i was there too. Unfortunately we couldnt met, I arrived very late with my group, so there was almost no time left for something else. Anyway we were standing almost centered, a bit on Nate Navarros (bass player) side. And yes I can relate to your sound critic. I heard a lot of the base, but almost nothing from Randy (2nd guitar). It was all a bit vague or fuzzy. But thank god the sound on both of the other shows was clear and almost perfect. But seeing them live for the first time, was pure bliss :) Greetings

Sad to hear this, I visited them in Amsterdam last month and that was fantastic. Even got 5 star reviews which rarely happens. I can't recall the guest members being lackluster either. I hope you can see them again somewhere!

Almost 3hour show was mind blowing, i never got bored once... exept by people around me not being back in time to sit, so blackest eyes and fear of.. was chaotic for me I hope i can see them live again!

I saw PT back in Sept. in Philadelphia, at the Metropolitan Opera House, which I would think was built with good acoustics in mind. This was my sixth PT show over the years, each at a different venue. That being said, your experience mirrors my own. I think part of it was having seats high up in the balcony, almost at the level of the suspended PA system. The sound was just terrible, dominated by ridiculous amounts of bass and just a very muddled mix. And I was wearing earplugs. Totally unexpected, based on my previous PT and Steven Wilson shows. And as far as the two hired guys, they were positioned on the extreme edges of the stage, almost as if they weren't supposed to be part of the show. Just a letdown after high anticipation of getting another chance to see them. Didn't even get a t-shirt, and I always get a t-shirt.

I was there... on the floor like 9 rows back on the inside aisle. I had eargasms in - and it sounded great to me. I thought the speaker arrangement was absurd for the space and was overpowering, if I did not have earplugs in, I would not have been able to handle the sheer volume. That said, thankfully, being where I was, I did not suffer your fate. I checked out the shows after where Steven was sick - and I felt bad for those folks, he sounded sick.

Okey, I'll give you another chance to see PT! Because they are playing in The Netherlands once again at BosPop Festival outside this time, better accoustics. If I were you you should get tickets for the Festival, a one day ticket to see them. I saw Steven Wilson in 2015 over there and the accoustics were great! With even a quadrophonic setup a la Pink Floyd you know. So if you want to see them at a good setting you should go there. It is in Weert.

So sorry to hear U we’re very sick for the PT Concert! I know when I’m very sick every little thing bothers me weather it’s food it doesn’t taste good, listening to music doesn’t sound good or bothers me at home! Another words I rather have it peaceful and have very quiet surroundings… So maybe U should have taken a pass on giving any review under those conditions? Hopefully your a lot better and Merry Xmas and a very Happy New Years!

In my particular case it doesn’t affect me to that degree when I’m sick something as beautiful as porcupine trees music for instance. I talked to other people that were in the concert and they all agree that the sound was far from ideal. What I should have actually given a pass to is going to the concert in those conditions because the experience overall was not ideal anyway, but my perception of the concert, while physically unpleasant, was sobered and separate from my condition. Two separate things. I would’ve not gone to this concert should’ve I had known the acoustics of the place. My goal now is to go to the next Porcupine Tree concert as soon as possible and redeem my experience from the previous one.

Yep, same experience when I saw them at Wembley arena in London. Acoustics sucked, no separation between the instruments, lacking in definition, no punch to the bass and drums just boom etc etc. However, I saw AC/DC at the same venue some years ago and the sound was flawless. PT sound engineers need to do their homework..

Randomly stumbled on this video. I had similar experiences with poor mixing/acoustics in Sweden at the Avicii arena. I was a little afraid that the mixing and the acoustic might be challenging beforehand in a such big arena, which is not made for music. Still, I had super high expectations for the show. The gig was by no means bad, but it would have been so much better if the bass wasn't so overpowering. And overall it was probably the loudest gig that I've ever witnessed. On the other hand, I think Nate Navarro and Randy McStine were/are great addition to the band.

Oh dear, I'm very sorry that you had such a bad experience in Berlin. Since the beginning of Porcupine Tree's live career in Germany, I have seen them here and abroad very often. At least in the last few years, I was always delighted with their sound, sometimes even enthusiastic. It was no different on this tour, but due to the size of the halls, it was probably crucial where you stood or sat. Apart from that, Berlin was the worst concert of the shows I attended in terms of sound. The first half was modest, even though we sat far to the front left. After the break, it got much better. In Stuttgart, we sat almost identically, but this time the sound was already good after the 3rd song. One day later, Oberhausen was the best concert of the tour for me, both in terms of the joy of playing the whole band (so it also applies to the tour guitarist and bassist) and the sound. This time we sat pretty far in the front right. In Amsterdam, the atmosphere was exceptional; the sound was also perfect, but I also heard negative statements about the sound from all the concerts, depending on where the fans were located. In such big halls, it is obviously adversely to be in the back area; the sound quickly becomes musty due to the breaking sound waves. But it has always been loud with Porcupine Tree, sometimes at the pain threshold. So good earplugs are always strongly advised.

Same experience for me in London's Ovo Arena. The venue has not improved since I saw Yes there 20 years ago and was similarly disappointed with the terrible acoustics. With bands of this calibre you need to hear all the notes clearly but it was just a wall of noise to me and often sounding out of key. Apparently, though, people on ground level said it sounded great so it seems the balconies must be avoided. I suppose smaller venues have better acoustics because there is less opportunity for the sound to bounce around and everybody is on the same ground level.

  • @ivanriverooo

Another effective way to improve and Irina’s acoustics is to have the effin place full of people and I mean every bloody seat so that there is almost no room for the sounds to bounce off concrete. The very bodies will absorb the waves but in my case the place was a three-quarter to half empty especially in the critical areas for acoustics, where it was dead empty, Plus the whole ceiling of the place made a bloody glass.

That would be dissapointing for a great band like Porcupine Tree in a venue not suited for rock concerts. Tickets are not cheap. I did not go the the concert in Toronto but got good reviews. I would have liked the whole group back with Colin Edwin and John Wesley.

WOW. I saw them in at MGM Fenway in Boston at the very start of their tour, and had the EXACT same experience. The sound where I was sitting on the floor (in $300 seats) was too loud and muddled. All the instruments were blended together. About halfway through the first set we moved to the very top of the stadium (the cheapest seats - would have cost us less than $100) and had a better experience sound wise after that. I also felt that the bass lost a lot without Colin. When I watch my Blu Ray of Arriving Somewhere, the bass guitar is just as prominent as all the other instruments - Colin’s bass guitar is on an even playing field with Steven’s lead guitar, Gavin’s drums, and Richard’s synthesizers. It is front-and-center in the sound of the band. At the Boston show, the bass was just…there. The bass player stayed off to the side, largely out of frame, and his playing dissipated into the background in a purely supporting role even on bass heavy songs like Harridan. The band lost a big chunk of its sound signature without Colin. I'm sorry but Richard is a joke and his stuff is obviously pre-recorded. At the intro to Buying New Soul, my wife (who was a professional musician earlier in life) turned to me and said, “this is a recording.” Sure enough, Richard was just walking from synthesizer to synthesizer, pressing one button at a time, not “playing” anything - just pressing play on recordings. When we were talking about the show afterwards, she said, “I can’t even call Richard a keyboard player. He’s a sound effects guy.” It was also telling that in songs where there is actual keyboard-playing to be done, Steven sheds his guitar and does the playing. If Richard gets paid the same amount as Gavin - its criminal. One of the biggest contrasts for me was watching Richard step from synthesizer to synthesizer looking cool and pressing buttons, while Gavin worked his ass off on every song. The kicker was Collapse the Light Into Earth. This song is literally just Steven playing Chopsticks on piano and singing the chorus over-and-over again in a grating off-key timbre. Really bad. I think it was picked for the set list just to give Gavin extra time to rest. Needless to say I hadn't been that disappointed in a concert in a long, long time...
