Poplar Lane Dwelling Fire 12/31/23 Levittown, PA

On scene video of firefighters arriving on scene of a a working house fire in the Pinewood section of Levittown on New Year's Eve.
Emergency crews were dispatched after 6:30 pm for a reported dwelling fire on Poplar Lane. Fire chiefs arrived on the scene and were met with a fully involved carport in front of an attached garage with fire quickly extending into the residence.
Levittown #1 Engine 32 arrived first in and went in service with their deck gun using tank water on arrival and pulled handlines to begin an exterior defensive attack and protect an exposure dwelling once a water supply was established. Multiple handlines were placed in service as well as a ground monitor and Squrt 13's aerial.
Once heavy fire conditions on the exterior of the home were knocked down, firefighters transitioned to interior operations where they worked extensively to extinguish fire throughout the structure. Search for any victims was negative due to all occupants being accounted for with the exception of a cat who is believed to have perished in the fire.
Emergency crews from Levittown #'s 1, 2, Edgely, Tullytown, Fairless Hills, Morrisville, William Penn and Falls Township Fire Companies as well as Levittown-Fairless Hills Rescue Squad were all in attendance of this incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Falls Township Fire Marshal's Office.

At what point did they lay a line to the hydrant? That looks like it would have taken a lot of work in doing so. To this day I don't know why the first truck in does not lay a line in. It doesn't take that long to do so and saves you workload and time in the long run. Those having to lay the hose back could be used for something else to actually fight the fire.

@@ffrick73that’s old school. 30 seconds of proper deck gun operation and dramatically slow the progression of fire, while hand lines are being stretched and water supply is established. I submit, that 30 seconds of deck gun can be far more effective at slowing the fire than 5 minutes of 1-3/4 (our current standard). Fire generally doubles every 30 seconds. Transitional Attacks are one good tactic when fire is showing.

Practice this evolution with every level of manning. (A the engineer on a 3 man engine in Deerfield Beach, FL recently told me how he can get to work with his deck gun and knock down the fire before his LT and FF can stretch and flow water. Excellent video! Looks like they got control in less than 30 minutes. Great! Some critique: Great deck gun work- knocked down a significant amount of fire. Once a water supplies established, I wished they continued it a while longer. I would have liked to see the squirt’s boom in use sooner. It did great once they did use it. Exposures: I didn’t see much attention it. IMO, the fire service needs to adopt new thinking with regard to exposures. I submit, that we should dispatch an additional structure response for each exposure that is threatened; that assignment would focus only on the exposure (unless needed for RIT response). In this situation, I didn’t see anyone entering the structure on side 4 (delta). Walls and ceilings needed to be opened and checked for active fire. On last FYI- I’ve seen it so often: firefighters need to take another second or two and secure their helmet. On the Cairns New Yorker, there’s a knob on the back that gets tightened and then a chin strap. Safety. Good job overall! Thanks for posting.

The fire goes as the first line goes or lack there of. Like all things we are never privy to the nuisances of individual fires but I think most can agree the first 3 minutes were tough. Seeing 3 chiefs car on scene at least one of them should of been ascertaining if the house was evacuated, hydrant location and a general size up. The engine crew gets out and proceeds to ask the questions the chiefs should already have. Having 5 white helmets in front of the house all with there hands on the radio drooling over who gets to talk is a tough watch when they could be assisting with the hydrant they parked near and helping with flaking a cross lay in parallel with the deck gun. The first due chiefs dropped the ball and spent more time getting packed up and grabbing tools from their Suvs instead of leading and helping the troops on scene. To many chiefs not enough Indians.

They’re lucky that exposure was at its distance because she was close to lighting off.

19:20 Each house fire is different. There is no set plan for any fire call. People want to complain about the response to this fire, you should watch NYFD on some of their calls. It also doesn't help, that many house building codes do NOT require fire blocks in walls, like they did 30+ years ago. Just a shortcut in build construction. Many multi family complexes don't even require a brick or concrete fire walls anymore. Yes, I have been there, done that for 23 years.

Again large volume of fire that can be seen by first due. Does not stop hook hydrant. If your rig has 4 or more men on it stopping for few seconds to drop one guy to tie in to hydrant is not going slow you down plus you have supply line all set not forced to wait on arriving units. I can understand deck gun but without supply line kills tank fast which you see they had to shut down. Then four guys on 1 3/4 line which should have been 2 1/2 and no one seemed that concerned about D exposure .

for the life of me I don't understand with all that fire showing why not grab a hydrant on the way in with the delayed response of the other companies you're going to be fighting that alone for a while it was good to use the deck gun but @ 1500 gpm you're only going to operate for a couple minutes before the tank runs dry which is exactly what happened. At least if you're on a hydrant you can use the deck gun and several hand lines or a combination of hand lines and stang guns to be able to knock more fire down.

There's seems to be a lot of new, clean bunker suits wandering around. Even at 27 minutes, there's still fire on the ground floor after putting enough water on it to float the whole house down the street. This wasn't a well trained crew. Actually,it was painful to watch. Not an ounce of hustle or tactics. Waste of tank water blasting everything but the fire. There needs to be some serious training following this event to get the crew to move with purpose instead of walking around like lost puppies while they let the house burn to the ground

I want this video down or my mom and my fathers voices out of it. No one had any permissions to record them or this occuring and out of respect for my parents who owned that home for 34 years i dont want them finding this video and reliving it or listening to the most devestating moment in their lives for the whole world to see without their consent or knowledge. What kind of fucked up is that?
