Red Cedar CNG Trash Truck Fire 6/19/23 Levittown, PA

On scene video of a trash truck fire in the Red Cedar section of Levittown.
Firefighters from Bristol Township Fire Rescue, Levittown #2 and Edgely Fire Companies worked to extinguish fire involving a compressed natural gas powered Waste Management trash truck. The vehicle caught fire shortly before 11am Monday prompting several 911 calls as a black column of smoke rose up over the Five Points area.
Bristol Township Engine 225 arrived on the scene with a fully involved truck cab with ruptured CNG tanks venting off. Levittown Squirt and Rescue 13 arrived shortly after and crews worked to establish a water supply and fight the fire as well as protect exposures with two handlines as well as Squirt 13's aerial and assistance from Edgely Engine 10 with a third line in service from the other side.
The fire was placed under control in an hour and Rob's Towing worked to remove the burnt truck from the scene. No injuries were reported but homes on the street from where sustained minor heat damage to the exterior siding as well as some singed plants.
This video was uploaded with the intent of local news reporting and documentation of the emergency services

I hope you are not a firefighter, ……. That is the most bone headed thing I’ve ever herd in my 38 years of firefighting. So you want to just expose the community with hazardous waste and materials just floating down the street…..how about containment?? Keeping everything to a confined space or area making it a content fire….. man what a bone headed statement..

Even though the ash from my wood burning stove was 2 days old and "cold" when I put out for pick up it evidently caught on fire when the trash collector tossed it into the back of the truck. I got lucky and the trash man was able to pull out everything that was burning and throw it on the ground. I only had to clean up a medium size mess and have dirty snow for a while in front of the house Wow! that was a close one. Could have been expensive.

Between the 75-150 gallons of diesel fuel, the 40-50 gallons of Hydraulic Fluid and what ever trash the truck has and what that contains.. these fires are a nightmare... I cannot even imagine when an electric Garbage truck would go on fire, then you have the 40-50 gallons of Hydraulic fluid, the garbage and the Lithium batteries that burn forever and water has a hard time putting out..

I dunno what the best approach to a huge EV trash truck fire would be, but for small EV vehicle fires, sometimes the best first step is to move the burning vehicle away from anything else that could burn. To do this, many fire departments have been equipping all their apparatus with TOW CHAINS so that when arriving at an EV fire, the first task (after rescuing occupants) is to hook on and DRAG the burning vehicle to some vacant spot. That way, if it takes hours and hours to put out the fire, the firemen don't have to also be protecting other vehicles or structures at the same time.

The 5" supply line was off of Rescue 13 which was up the street around the corner at a hydrant. The firefighters with the help of bystanders must have been already pulling the supply line down the street as Squirt 13 was arriving which I believe is why the Squirt didn't lay into the scene. About 25 seconds in You can see the supply line on the back of the Squirt is still is place with the tarp strapped down. If Engine 225 entered from Edgely Rd they wouldn't have had a hydrant to lay in from without dropping it across a main artery. The other hydrant that Engine 10 established the second water supply at is further down the same street past the fire.
