Pop Pantheons! Comic Goddesses, Sacred Starlets & Dead Rock Stars

KaPOW!! Welcome, friends! In this video I'll be discussing my personal definition of a pop pantheon, why a practitioner may choose to use pop imagery and how it appears in my own sacred spaces. Thank you for coming with an open mind and for keeping the conversation friendly. :)
P.S. I'm fighting a yucky cold, so don't look at my sore pink pink nose! :p
Do YOU use pop imagery in your practice? In what context? Who would you invite to your "Dead or Alive Dinner Party"? Thank you for watching! XO

I did this without even really realizing :) When David Bowie passed away the other day I was so heavy hearted- I listen to his music whenever I'm feeling like a bit of an outsider, and I think about him whenever I try to accept my uniqueness and individuality. Whenever I'm scared to wear something new that I really love but I'm afraid of being judged, I draw energy from David Bowie to give me strength to not give a fuck what people think. Thank you so much for making this video though, really made me think deeply about all the different archetypes and symbols in the media throughout my life. David Bowie was the first thing that came to mind. I'm going make something for him in my practice very soon.

Thanks for making this video. I'm still a baby witch, but I've been seeing a lot of advice along the lines of "do whatever works for you" ... so while recently playing through the Soul Reaver games, I found myself noticing how haunting and mystical-sounding the music is, so I put a bunch of it on my phone and now I listen to it whenever doing a ritual. It really helps to set the mood. So, in other words, I use video game music =P

Molly I can't say what an inspiration this video has been for me! As a queer raised in the mormon church, I chose witchcraft in order to find a pre-christain sense of unity with the natural world and personal power that knows no limits and does not take from others. I struggled with personifying deity during the opening chapter of of my path . I felt stifled by the traditional Angol-saxxon figures that are propagated through Wicca, as they tend to be heteronormative, ie, relying on the "necessary" partnership of masculinity and femininity. In the mormon church men are the only ones that have godly power, or who can speek on his behalf. I found it to be so evident of patriarchal appetite, that the greatest authority in the universe had to resemble him. The heavenly mother, on the other hand, is stuffed in some cosmic domestic sphere where she cannot be spoken of out of "respect." Yet prayers are not directed to both. It infuriates me. Your revelation that my obsession with artists like Gertrude Stein , Walt Whitman, or even Joe Strummer can be portals to greater power has totally expanded my viewpoint! There are so many possibilities!

Wow! This was so perfect and so glad I found it! I never realized I was working with Pop Pantheons until I started hearing about others (you, Kellie-Ann) talking about it on your channels. Now it makes so much sense and so fluid. For me Audrey Hepburn for Grace; Maleficent for Shadow Work; Snoopy for Joy; Tasha Tudor for Inspiration/Fulfilling One's Dreams; Arya Stark for Strength in Solitude; Jane Austen for Contentment in the Daily Things; St. Therese for Patience; Sara Crewe for Grace Under Pressure; Beatrix Potter for Love of Nature and the Smallest of Creatures; Jane Eyre for Staying True to Oneself; Alice in Wonderland for Willingness to Travel to the Unknown, Hedging, Pathwork, Trance. And a whole bunch more! :) Thank to for validating what I am doing and that it isn't overly bizarre or silly! Especially when you compared it to Patron Saints. It makes so much sense!!

The Lord of the Rings is a central part of my path. Thank you for talking about this! Most of the resources I find only talk about using older depictions of the gods and when I started out on my path I seriously tried to look up if using things like LoTR was an 'accepted' practice. I came to the conclusion on my own that it was, but I'm really glad you have come out to publicly say you feel it is alright as well. It's really great how diverse people's paths can be and there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to view something! As I'm fond of saying (mainly to myself) The Silmarillion by Tolkien is the closest thing I have to a religious text! :P

I confess without shame that I am working on some Deity-related stuff in my own Grimoire and their representations have found merit in Transformers, the Elder Scrolls series and Harry Potter. Good stuff! I know this is an older video, but I have recently become a Pop Culture Pagan. I began life as a Christian. I became more and more open until I found Buddhism. From there I embraced both Buddhism and Shinto while carrying interest in Paganism. Once I started looking into it more, I found myself not really connecting with my European ancestors’ old ways so much as the practices of ancient China and Japan. However, I reached the point where I realized I was becoming too absorbed in trying to emulate Chinese and Japanese cultures and wasn’t being genuine to myself. I felt that to be true to myself I had to balance my spiritual ties to East Asia with my hereditary ties to Europe and America. I realized there was a fictional world that does this and this world feels like home. Hyrule. I took up the veneration of the Three Golden Goddesses Din, Farore, and Nayru. I directly pray and offer to Goddess Hylia, the protector of the Triforce as well as Hyrule and all life in it. I call myself a Knight of Hylia and a Sage of the Triforce.

As you can see from my icon, I love Castiel, an Angel, from the show Supernatural. I even have a bracelet that I sometimes wear to work when I'm having a rough day to get me through it. Not only is his face on it, but it says a famous funny line of his that helps bring a smile to my face. I didn't even know I was using Pop Pantheon magic in a way just by touching my bracelet, but I will definitely keep looking into this as I practice, because as a professional fangirl, the idea of using what I love in my practice instead of just using old time traditions has me inspired. You have made me inspired.

I do an odd mix of pop/traditional imagery in my magic, mostly because, for me, I don't actually believe in deity in a "magical god/goddess who knows of me". I see them more as just the same energies used in different faces: archetypes, like you've described them here. I also use Morticia and Gomez for romance work, as well as characters like Jack Skellington & Sally, and Wybie & Coraline. I use imagery of Athena/owls for wisdom/'battle strategy'. And I almost always depict 'death' as an kind elderly man who guides people beyond the divide (for whatever reason)...

YAS to every single bit of this! Especially the parts on how pop pantheons can help us avoid cultural appropriation and open up more liberating imagery for people who don't see their life and values depicted in traditional pantheons. In fact, this very topic was the tipping point in my own realization that I needed to stop trying to force myself into the boxes of pre-existing magickal traditions-- not that people on some sort of traditional path can't also have a pop pantheon, but that I needed something without rules and that allowed for, dare I say it, the irreverently silly. In short, I could talk about Slayer Magick all day (Buffy is to me what Tank Girl is to you it seems; she is particularly good for slaying your own personal demons!). Some day I would love to see a collectively authored zine or even book elaborating on all of this more.

I have followed you for ages, but I set aside a night to binge your older videos, and my goodness I’m so glad I did. This video has literally changed my life. I have had a spiritual cold for ages. I’ve been a witch for 16 years, but I couldn’t find a connection, a meaningful one, to deities, certainly not one that didn’t feel forced. This has absolutely blown my mind. I felt drawn to Jesus, but not Christianity, and I couldn’t think of how that could work. I felt connected to characters, more than I did to figures, and thought that couldn’t be right. You have changed my whole plate Molly. Eternal blessings for the magic you bring into the lives of everyone that has the privilege of watching you ✨🌹

I know that for one I have been very shaped by media and great archetypes, so this is simply fantastic. LOVE those candles, by the way. Augh.

Thank you for making this video! I love your energy and personality! This video has really has me thinking and inspiring me to to just let go with my craft. I push a lot that the craft is all about individuality but this video help me cross over that uncertainty that I had about playing around with different images and ideas of who or what I work with. Brightest blessings and may good fortune smile in your favor!

So much love for this video! I relate so much more towards pop pantheons and use them in my own sacred space. I see specific deities through pop culture characters and tend to draw towards those (like Hel and Persephone). I've just never been a very "traditional" person haha! Subscribing to your channel!

I loved this video so much! What a great idea to draw energy from other sources. I have loved Gomez and Morticia since I was a kid, shows you how old I am. I watched an episode of the Addams family just this morning! Their true love for each other was a major part of the show for me. Morticia would give Gomez her come hither look and he is all hers, sigh, true love. I never felt connected to the gods from other countries. I did use the saints a bit having gone to Catholic school but never felt a great connection with them either. I'm going to start using these ideas and love how you put them on candles. I'm going to make a Morticia and Gomez candle for myself to find true love. Keep up the great videos.

Anne Boleyn and her daughter Queen Elizabeth is such a sacred story in my life of divine feminine power! Bumblebee from transformers brings me joy and comes to mind when the divine communicates with me through song lyrics popping into my head! Tv character Dr Gregory House reminds me that genius ideas and higher perspective solutions aren’t found in textbooks. Rather they are revealed to us in the seemingly mundane reflections of our everyday lives!

My path to your vid --->Hero's Journey--->American Gods---->Tarot---->KZread Tarot---->KZread witches--->Kelly Ann-->PowerFemme recommended you after I expressed my personal concerns about cultural appropriation. Also funnily enough ages ago I was recommended Lirael by a librarian friend forever ago (on a totally unrelated note) and purchased the book set for my son, I'm inspired to give them a read now that you've mentioned them, and as I finish watching your vid I'm writing a list of pop culture archetypes I can work with in a real and relatable way :) Thank you!

I've always used the imagery from the Sun and the Moon from the Card Captor Sakura anime's Kerberos and Yue. It was the first magical series that I met, and I feel really connected to the story and the archetypes that appear in the Clow Cards... A long time ago I was wondering if I should make them a personal pantheon, and you've given me some perspective, you've inspired me again. :) I really love your content, Molly. Thank you so much for your experience and comments. Greetings from Chile!! 🇨🇱

I heard about it and didn't understand it really but after seeing you Ideas there a just a few things that popped in my head. I'm in love (almost obsessed) with Lord of the Rings, and I definitely consider it to wave it in my practice. I never had a connection with a god or goddess but with these pop icons I can work. Like Arwen and Aragorn for love and Eowyn for warrior energy or the hobbits for enjoying the little things in life. This makes me brain go like a hamster in his wheel. I keep collecting your video's so I can watch them again and write down all the inspiration. again; *thank you so much!*

I really enjoyed this! I kept thinking that huge Jim Morrison cloth in the cave of the Lost Boys :) They had lot's of music from the Doors in that film. I have some Charmed art in my Grimoire. Whole show had such great impact on me when I was a teenager (especially the first two season). Love it. I see that Frida Kahlo has reached almost "saint" like position among some artists. I know artists that focus entirely painting characters inspired by Frida. She was a very cool and courageous woman. I think Tove Jansson is that to me. Multidimensional artist who wasn't afraid of being who she was. Some people are just simply so awesome that people across different times and cultures can relate to them and admire them.

I feel super self conscious about typing this since as you said in the beginning-a lot of people are going to think this is woo woo koo koo lol. But the ideas you presented make me feel different about some of the fictional characters that have felt so alive to me and meant so much to me. Like Daenerys Targaryen being a near religious figure to many. Both in the fictional world and outside of it. There’s been a movement for women to feel “empowered”, find their “voices” and so forth. And to have “strong women” represented in the media. But she’s the first one I can think of really really speaking to me, resonating deeply. Her resourcefulness, strength, her ability to take the worst of situations and turn them around in her favor. The passion, desire for a more just world, the inner fire in her represented by dragon fire. I always felt a little silly with how much the character means to me, but this video feels like permission to take it and run with it. Because of the way pop culture icons can tap into our psyches. Brilliant!
