Pop Pantheons! Comic Goddesses, Sacred Starlets & Dead Rock Stars
KaPOW!! Welcome, friends! In this video I'll be discussing my personal definition of a pop pantheon, why a practitioner may choose to use pop imagery and how it appears in my own sacred spaces. Thank you for coming with an open mind and for keeping the conversation friendly. :)
P.S. I'm fighting a yucky cold, so don't look at my sore pink pink nose! :p
Do YOU use pop imagery in your practice? In what context? Who would you invite to your "Dead or Alive Dinner Party"? Thank you for watching! XO

I completely agree. Don't think I can think of a better couple than that!
I'm an artist and a writer, and I use my own characters and my own unique versions of the gods in my practice. I sort of felt crazy or selfish doing this, but after seeing this I feel more confident inviting my own characters into the sacred. Thank you.

Alex O'Rio same!!!! I created my own pantheon, stories and art. I felt totally crazy before seeing this.
I did this without even really realizing :) When David Bowie passed away the other day I was so heavy hearted- I listen to his music whenever I'm feeling like a bit of an outsider, and I think about him whenever I try to accept my uniqueness and individuality. Whenever I'm scared to wear something new that I really love but I'm afraid of being judged, I draw energy from David Bowie to give me strength to not give a fuck what people think. Thank you so much for making this video though, really made me think deeply about all the different archetypes and symbols in the media throughout my life. David Bowie was the first thing that came to mind. I'm going make something for him in my practice very soon.

David Bowie is part of my pantheon as well. I see him as a creative, chamaleonic and empowered energy. Is part of the 'Creative Side' of my altar.
I use catwoman and poison ivy lego people on my altar. lol I thought I was such a weirdo for doing it! I lovvvvvvveeee you!
Thanks for making this video. I'm still a baby witch, but I've been seeing a lot of advice along the lines of "do whatever works for you" ... so while recently playing through the Soul Reaver games, I found myself noticing how haunting and mystical-sounding the music is, so I put a bunch of it on my phone and now I listen to it whenever doing a ritual. It really helps to set the mood. So, in other words, I use video game music =P

Even though I’m not a witch I also use game music to meditate journal and play around with tarot cards
Molly I can't say what an inspiration this video has been for me! As a queer raised in the mormon church, I chose witchcraft in order to find a pre-christain sense of unity with the natural world and personal power that knows no limits and does not take from others. I struggled with personifying deity during the opening chapter of of my path . I felt stifled by the traditional Angol-saxxon figures that are propagated through Wicca, as they tend to be heteronormative, ie, relying on the "necessary" partnership of masculinity and femininity. In the mormon church men are the only ones that have godly power, or who can speek on his behalf. I found it to be so evident of patriarchal appetite, that the greatest authority in the universe had to resemble him. The heavenly mother, on the other hand, is stuffed in some cosmic domestic sphere where she cannot be spoken of out of "respect." Yet prayers are not directed to both. It infuriates me. Your revelation that my obsession with artists like Gertrude Stein , Walt Whitman, or even Joe Strummer can be portals to greater power has totally expanded my viewpoint! There are so many possibilities!
Wow! This was so perfect and so glad I found it! I never realized I was working with Pop Pantheons until I started hearing about others (you, Kellie-Ann) talking about it on your channels. Now it makes so much sense and so fluid. For me Audrey Hepburn for Grace; Maleficent for Shadow Work; Snoopy for Joy; Tasha Tudor for Inspiration/Fulfilling One's Dreams; Arya Stark for Strength in Solitude; Jane Austen for Contentment in the Daily Things; St. Therese for Patience; Sara Crewe for Grace Under Pressure; Beatrix Potter for Love of Nature and the Smallest of Creatures; Jane Eyre for Staying True to Oneself; Alice in Wonderland for Willingness to Travel to the Unknown, Hedging, Pathwork, Trance. And a whole bunch more! :) Thank to for validating what I am doing and that it isn't overly bizarre or silly! Especially when you compared it to Patron Saints. It makes so much sense!!

+Kelly-Ann Maddox Thank you SO MUCH for taking time to watch! I'm thrilled to hear you enjoyed it! I am a looooong time fangirl and am deeply grateful for the love you put in to all of your soulful content. (Self Love September was a life changer.) I can't wait to hear more about your practice!
The Lord of the Rings is a central part of my path. Thank you for talking about this! Most of the resources I find only talk about using older depictions of the gods and when I started out on my path I seriously tried to look up if using things like LoTR was an 'accepted' practice. I came to the conclusion on my own that it was, but I'm really glad you have come out to publicly say you feel it is alright as well. It's really great how diverse people's paths can be and there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to view something! As I'm fond of saying (mainly to myself) The Silmarillion by Tolkien is the closest thing I have to a religious text! :P

I hold to Once upon a time as the core of my craft inspired by when nobody believed Henry about being fairytale characters.. I believe we are the fairytales of the dragons but we've been cursed by Christianity for decades to forget who we really are.
I started watching your videos recently and came across this one and it made me really happy to see cultural appropriation brought up! It's one of those things that always makes me cautious when following pagans/witches on KZread or other social media because I want to be following people who are sensitive to the issue. :)
I love this! Thank you for talking about this because I've been feeling confused about my work with Stevie Nicks and Rhiannon!
Why not? I confess without shame that I am working on some Deity-related stuff in my own Grimoire and their representations have found merit in Transformers, the Elder Scrolls series and Harry Potter. I also have a personal thing... I think of a (sadly deceased) specific musician as a god/Kami figure as well. You can laugh if you like.

Good stuff! I know this is an older video, but I have recently become a Pop Culture Pagan. I began life as a Christian. I became more and more open until I found Buddhism. From there I embraced both Buddhism and Shinto while carrying interest in Paganism. Once I started looking into it more, I found myself not really connecting with my European ancestors’ old ways so much as the practices of ancient China and Japan. However, I reached the point where I realized I was becoming too absorbed in trying to emulate Chinese and Japanese cultures and wasn’t being genuine to myself. I felt that to be true to myself I had to balance my spiritual ties to East Asia with my hereditary ties to Europe and America. I realized there was a fictional world that does this and this world feels like home. Hyrule. I took up the veneration of the Three Golden Goddesses Din, Farore, and Nayru. I directly pray and offer to Goddess Hylia, the protector of the Triforce as well as Hyrule and all life in it. I call myself a Knight of Hylia and a Sage of the Triforce.
HECK YEAH pop culture paganism! I'm partial to stuff like My Little Pony or Disney (Rapunzel's Healing Chant, anyone?). I love it, thanks for this amazing video

what an amazing idea to design your own tarot deck around!!! i love your videos and your energy, they're very thought provoking and always spark my creativity, thank you!
I absolutely love the pantheons you've chosen to work with. I also work with Wonder Woman and Xena. I find that their strength and resilience empowers me daily.
Not lying: I was just looking at my copy of American Gods for inspiration while this video was playing & then you suddenly mentioned it. Wow. :)
This is an older video but it was exactly what I needed to hear at the moment. In my recommended as if it found me. Thank you for this.
Again, I'm only repeating everyone else, but you're videos are so uplifting and inspiring. One day you should write a book about all these fabulous ideas you share! Many blessings your way. :)
OMG YES!!! I had this connection a couple of years ago and have never heard anyone talk about this before! I even make what I call nerdy inspiration crafts where I take an archetype or character from comics, video games, songs, etc. and find the witchiness in it! Every time I have mentioned this concept to others I get weird looks!!! SO glad I am not alone!
I like that Glinda candle too much :)
I thought the idea of pop pantheons was silly until I watched this video. Thank you for your wisdom. You're always so inspiring!
I'm a suuuuuper new moon baby witch and I. LOVE. THIS. I never thought about using pop pantheons but it makes sooooo much sense to me. THANK YOU!
actually, my coven's initiation ritual is very closely based off of the joining of the companions from the game Skyrim. I just thought I'm a nerd. I'm glad to see I'm not the only o e that uses this sorta thing

+AngelofSeitan DO IT!
Think I'm going with Buffy on this one! :D Such an inspiring, strong pop pantheon for me whilst growing up!
As you can see from my icon, I love Castiel, an Angel, from the show Supernatural. I even have a bracelet that I sometimes wear to work when I'm having a rough day to get me through it. Not only is his face on it, but it says a famous funny line of his that helps bring a smile to my face. I didn't even know I was using Pop Pantheon magic in a way just by touching my bracelet, but I will definitely keep looking into this as I practice, because as a professional fangirl, the idea of using what I love in my practice instead of just using old time traditions has me inspired. You have made me inspired.
I do an odd mix of pop/traditional imagery in my magic, mostly because, for me, I don't actually believe in deity in a "magical god/goddess who knows of me". I see them more as just the same energies used in different faces: archetypes, like you've described them here. I also use Morticia and Gomez for romance work, as well as characters like Jack Skellington & Sally, and Wybie & Coraline. I use imagery of Athena/owls for wisdom/'battle strategy'. And I almost always depict 'death' as an kind elderly man who guides people beyond the divide (for whatever reason)...
I connect so much with Starclan from the Warriors cat series and this video made me so much more confident including it in my craft!
Thank you. I love the thought of take things we love into our workings. I really struggle working with deity. I think this will really help my practice.
love this so much. i haven't given it heaps of thought, till coming by this vid, but it makes so much sense. especially with our creative souls & what speaks to us strongly, on that level. also i get the whole art, music, practice thing & the blurred lines. i feel really drawn & connected to these idea's, for many reasons...this week, a way of honoring Bowie was to get into my art practice by sketching him...& he just ended up propped up behind a new personal altar i'm creating... & it looks like he'll be staying. this vid rocks...inspiring...thank you for sharing BB
YAS to every single bit of this! Especially the parts on how pop pantheons can help us avoid cultural appropriation and open up more liberating imagery for people who don't see their life and values depicted in traditional pantheons. In fact, this very topic was the tipping point in my own realization that I needed to stop trying to force myself into the boxes of pre-existing magickal traditions-- not that people on some sort of traditional path can't also have a pop pantheon, but that I needed something without rules and that allowed for, dare I say it, the irreverently silly. In short, I could talk about Slayer Magick all day (Buffy is to me what Tank Girl is to you it seems; she is particularly good for slaying your own personal demons!). Some day I would love to see a collectively authored zine or even book elaborating on all of this more.

I definitely connect with pop pantheons. I'm running in a marathon tomorrow and calling in Commander Shepard (femshep specifically) from the Mass Effect video game series for that warrior spirit-get me thru it-kick ass goddess energy. I also utilize Star Wars, The Matrix, and various other images of scifi, fantasy, and anime art in my everyday practice. Fantastic topic and discussion! Love all the imagery you use!

Molly, I love this idea! What a great way to incorporate imagery of things that are specifically related to us personally that may be a bit more relate able to work with and seek the same meaning from.
I have followed you for ages, but I set aside a night to binge your older videos, and my goodness I’m so glad I did. This video has literally changed my life. I have had a spiritual cold for ages. I’ve been a witch for 16 years, but I couldn’t find a connection, a meaningful one, to deities, certainly not one that didn’t feel forced. This has absolutely blown my mind. I felt drawn to Jesus, but not Christianity, and I couldn’t think of how that could work. I felt connected to characters, more than I did to figures, and thought that couldn’t be right. You have changed my whole plate Molly. Eternal blessings for the magic you bring into the lives of everyone that has the privilege of watching you ✨🌹
Wooo! Yay! Another pop culture practitioner. I have been recently working with pop culture deities. By biggest pantheons I use are Monster High and Ever After High characters. Sailor moon is also a good pantheon, Among other pantheons I pick a few from here and there. I also work with "traditional" deities as well. You are right. They both have archetypes and mythology that surrounds them.

Brilliant! Absolutely inspired! I have a lot of issues when the "culture conversation" comes up because of my multifaceted background. Being a result of multiple cultures converging in one person, it's sometimes difficult to identify with any one pantheon as I know it, so I've stopped trying. I love how you put forth your ideas and the respect you show in your presentation. Well done.

I love this video so much I've re watched it a few times and I find it so inspiring. I appreciate everything you've done for the community and I'm so happy that I found your channel! Just a little note to say thanks and much love x
I just found your channel recently and this might be one of my favorite videos! I read an article in a Magical Almanac about this topic and you have expanded on that and I love it!! Thank you ❤️
Amazing! I love this perspective on myths and pantheons. I'll definitely have to consider pop pantheons/imagery.
Sri Sri Radha Krishna are my deities, always and forever. They are always present in my craft. But Sailor Moon inspires a lot of my magic too!
You have excellent taste in music my friend! I love your videos. They warm my heart and every one inspires me in my own journey.
This is really a liberating topic. I would definately considering using pop pantheons. I recently fell in love 💗 with Maleficent from the latest Disney movie and Angelina Jolie's performance was so powerful 😍. If that wasn't a real proper shadow work thing she was going through😁 What a strong archetype💪 Wanna know something? During my late teenage years, one of my spirit guides was Draco from the movie Dragonheart. What a dragon💗💗💗. Molly, you really rock, you bring a big smile on my face in every video I watch. Keep on rocking😘
this video makes me feel great about feeling the urge to adding a Pokemon (chansey) figure to my altar. bless you, teacher.
Personal favorite of mine is Julia Child, whose image hangs in our kitchen. She brings a love of food and of preparation of food, and of nourishing the soul.

PS (and this is the same person as ^that^ just with a different channel), I also thought I'd bring up how when I was younger and into video games, I played a lot of RPGs, and that the story line of Final Fantasy X has been **majorly** influential on my practice. Not just the behaviors of the characters in that game, but the imagery! There are some great sigils, symbols and glyphs that instantly spark magickal thoughts when I see them. Love!
Would it be super creepy to ask your permission to use YOU as a pop pantheon?! I just love your energy, and the fact that you combine art and the craft makes so much sense to me, And how you've gotten me out of the slump I was in, for many reasons.. Actually I wanted to use you and Kelly Anns images.. I'm a Gemini and my whole life and personality is all about recognizing both sides. You are the bubbly, colorful creative side and Kelly Ann is the darker more mysterious side.. Being that she works with Hel, and other reasons... I really hope you don't think this is creepy lol

What a wonderful video, thank you for sharing, not sure I will ever get enough of your videos, thank you for helping me along my Journey. I am glad found your site!
It’s so nice to hear someone actually defending this as their OWN practice, as opposed to armchair discussions. I have a pop pantheon as well, which mostly skews to older works (Ozma, Alice, the Discordian Eris at most recent), But I have recently been including Rumi Usagiyama from BNHA into my practice, due to her basically seeking me out!
This video is perfection. If only screaming at midnight was socially acceptable.
Love this video! I don't personally like the idea of calling upon deity, so honestly this "Pop Pantheon" concept marks the way for many new opportunities in my practice. I know that for one I have been very shaped by media and great archetypes, so this is simply fantastic. LOVE those candles, by the way. Augh.
This is so dope I've always been into pop culture magic just because it's very intrested yet gets you excited and creative.
I'm so glad I found your channel! I love your creative approach and I can't believe I hadn't thought about using a popculture/rockmusic pantheon. :D Yay for Beth Ditto, Tankgirl and the Addams Family!
Hi Molly, I'm new to the path and new to your channel. I have always been a fan of Freida and love the idea of using her in my work. I also am a trekker and think it would be fun to incorporate that as well. Thank you for all the inspiration you provide. You're great!
Thank you for making this video! I love your energy and personality! This video has really has me thinking and inspiring me to to just let go with my craft. Yay this was so awesome :) Loved it and love your candles. I've never used pop pantheons but you have brought me round to giving i a good play :) x
So much love for this video! I relate so much more towards pop pantheons and use them in my own sacred space. I see specific deities through pop culture characters and tend to draw towards those (like Hel and Persephone). I've just never been a very "traditional" person haha! Subscribing to your channel!
I loved this video so much! What a great idea to draw energy from other sources. I have loved Gomez and Morticia since I was a kid, shows you how old I am. I watched an episode of the Addams family just this morning! Their true love for each other was a major part of the show for me. Morticia would give Gomez her come hither look and he is all hers, sigh, true love. I never felt connected to the gods from other countries. I did use the saints a bit having gone to Catholic school but never felt a great connection with them either. I'm going to start using these ideas and love how you put them on candles. I'm going to make a Morticia and Gomez candle for myself to find true love. Keep up the great videos.
This made a lot of sense to me, and so glad to find i'm not alone! Thanks for posting the vid, i'm really enjoying your channel! Not sure whether you'll still read comments after a good 2 years! ;) bu thanks anyway, you are a great inspiration. x
Anne Boleyn and her daughter Queen Elizabeth is such a sacred story in my life of divine feminine power! Bumblebee from transformers brings me joy and comes to mind when the divine communicates with me through song lyrics popping into my head! Tv character Dr Gregory House reminds me that genius ideas and higher perspective solutions aren’t found in textbooks. Rather they are revealed to us in the seemingly mundane reflections of our everyday lives!

I heard about it and didn't understand it really but after seeing you Ideas there a just a few things that popped in my head. I'm in love (almost obsessed) with Lord of the Rings, and I definitely consider it to wave it in my practice. I never had a connection with a god or goddess but with these pop icons I can work. Like Arwen and Aragorn for love and Eowyn for warrior energy or the hobbits for enjoying the little things in life. This makes me brain go like a hamster in his wheel. I keep collecting your video's so I can watch them again and write down all the inspiration. again; *thank you so much!*

When you fall off of your chair with gleeful laughter because you have the same pop pantheon deities scattered about your home
What tips would have for someone who is super intrigued with this idea? I loved your explanation and whimsy. I think this is a wonderful idea(: Thank you!
Yes! All characters and images and even people are archetypes with different faces and their own complex layers. Love this concept! I channel all kinds of fictional characters, dead writers and poets, strong women throughout history, animals... ya, like you said, just do what makes your spirit soar! Great video
I’m contemplating an altar to the Forest Spirit of the film Princess Mononoke. Archetypes are universal for a reason!
This is a great video. Giggle, I love that laugh at 13:38 - 13:43! Thank you for posting. It is a source of inspiration for work today.
i absolutely LOVE this idea! i jave never heard of it before but for the modern day, urban witch there is no better way t ok inspire our deep desires and true intentions than figures who we identify with who we really tie to those ideas. thank you! your channek is amazing! inspiring and magical. maybe you could be my pop pantheon. lol not in a creepy way ;)
I grew up waking up super early so I could watch The Adams Family every morning before I went to school because something about it inspired me to create and be imaginative, so I looove the idea of using that sort of thing in my craft.

I love pop cultures pantheons! I use Harry Potter, once upon a time, etc... I find real fun in power rangers because it was a big part of my life when I was a child
This is interesting! This way of life recognises the sacredness of our own minds. A person who inspires another person, that is just as important as divine inspiration, I don't see the difference.
This speaks to me sooooooo loudly. Thanks, I`m not the only one.
I really enjoyed this! I kept thinking that huge Jim Morrison cloth in the cave of the Lost Boys :) They had lot's of music from the Doors in that film. I have some Charmed art in my Grimoire. Whole show had such great impact on me when I was a teenager (especially the first two season). Love it. I see that Frida Kahlo has reached almost "saint" like position among some artists. I know artists that focus entirely painting characters inspired by Frida. She was a very cool and courageous woman. I think Tove Jansson is that to me. Multidimensional artist who wasn't afraid of being who she was. Some people are just simply so awesome that people across different times and cultures can relate to them and admire them.

MIND-BLOWING.
I feel super self conscious about typing this since as you said in the beginning-a lot of people are going to think this is woo woo koo koo lol. But the ideas you presented make me feel different about some of the fictional characters that have felt so alive to me and meant so much to me. Like Daenerys Targaryen being a near religious figure to many. Both in the fictional world and outside of it. There’s been a movement for women to feel “empowered”, find their “voices” and so forth. And to have “strong women” represented in the media. But she’s the first one I can think of really really speaking to me, resonating deeply. Her resourcefulness, strength, her ability to take the worst of situations and turn them around in her favor. The passion, desire for a more just world, the inner fire in her represented by dragon fire. I always felt a little silly with how much the character means to me, but this video feels like permission to take it and run with it. Because of the way pop culture icons can tap into our psyches. Brilliant!
this video really spoke to me and i am going to explore this idea further ;)
