Speaking of cuts, as I see on the Criterion page, the set doesn't contain the japanse ending... Do you know why only the japanese laserdisc/blu-ray versions have the ending in which Jackie is arrested at the end of Police Story? In IMDB it says " it may have been cut either for the possibility of a sequel or the fact his character in Heart of Dragon (also released that year) also was a cop who was arrested in the ending".

Eureka's release of Police Story 1 & 2 has a bunch of different extra's to the Criterion release and is well worth picking up too.

There's a store just down the street for me that sells imported blu-rays and they posted recently that they have gotten in copies of the Eureka releases of Police Story + 2, Project A + A2, and Wheels on Meals. All of us movies are top 10 all-time Jackie Chan movies for me so I am very tempted.

@@hkcinemasociety Eureka did a great job with those movies, highly recommended. Great picture and audio plus lots of good extra features. Eureka also did a great job on the Once Upon a Time in China Trilogy boxset too, another recommended buy.

@@digi-bitsgaming significantly cheaper too. I expect the Eureka could even be cheaper than the Criterion for Americans, even with all the currency and price differences.

I really need this collection in my life. One of my favourite less known scenes is the the fight in police story 2 at the playground

I'm going to do a video I think once Halloween is over and I'm done with some other content I've been working on comparing police story and police story 2, and that playground fight is definitely going to get a mention. Absolutely incredible. I also love the fight in the restaurant and police story 2, even though it's really short.

This ended up being my 4th time buying Police Story 1 & 2. I had them on VHS, the Dragon Dynasty DVDs, the Shout Factory blu-ray set, and then this set.

For the first two, I have the non anamorphic HK DVDs, the Shout Factory DVDs, the HK blu rays, this set, and the Eureka 4k, so I guess that's four copies each? I might have duplicates of the HK DVDs though, so I may have five copies of each. Oh and actually I have them on VCD. So six maybe? For PS3 I have the HK non anamorphic DVD, the US DVD, VCD, HK Blu-ray, Eureka standalone blu ray, the Eureka 4k set, the 88 standalone Blu-ray, and the HKR release, plus I think an extra copy of the HK DVD, so... ah, by my official count, I have way too many copies of that movie 🤣

I have the Eureka limited edition box set. How does this compare? The Eureka releases are 4k scans and look fantastic.

On the Eureka release There's a third cut of Police Story 2 originally from the uk VHS release which features a unique English dub and this is the one I grew up with,might wanna check that out.

That relase is definitely on my radar. Thanks for the info. Makes me awnt to check it out even more! I tried to get my hands on the Eureka release of Project A but the shop down the street from me that sells import blu-rays was out of stock, so I picked up Wheels on Meals and Iron Monkey instead. I'm gonna be comparing the Hong Kong Rescue and Eureka releases of Wheels as soon as I can get through all the bonus material.

Great set. I believe the extra cut of Police Story 2 was in fact the original HK theatrical cut. I had a deltamac DVD with the same cut years ago and it was around 10-15 years ago that Fortune Star started using the extended Japanese cut as their "main cut".

I just grabbed this while scoping Barnes n Noble. They were putting it on the shelf while I was there. This was a blind buy for me, but it's half price July too.

Oh man! Blind buy, that's amazing. I wish I could see these movies again for the first time. I was so blown away by both when I first watched them years ago. I hope you enjoy them.

Beautiful art work!

I loved the Criterion release of Police Story. I have the original Eureka box set, the Eureka single case edition with corrected audio, the Japanese steelbook which is beautiful and this Criterion release. The Criterion release is definitely the best visual presentation in my opinion and has great extras. However it bums me out that the HK cut of PS2 wasn't restored as that particular cut is one of my favourite Jackie movies. The HK cut feels like a much tighter production compared to the over long Japanese version. It also uses better music cues etc and feels like Jackie had really improved his directing since the first film as the pacing was much better. But with the inclusion of the bizarre Vigilante, Street spy cops in the Japanese version with them scoping out the bomb makers it just feels like too much of a drag. The music during the playground fight on the HK cut really amps up the intensity and also Jackie sings a different song over the credits. I'm hopeful the upcoming police story box set (4k?) This year will rectify this.

I really like the longer version of the film but I have to admit I have not seen the shorter version in quite a while. It might make an interesting video to watch both versions back to back and do a comparison. I have the shorter version on DVD. But I agree, I think this set is fantastic. I do not have the Eureka set, unfortunately, but this one is enough for me for now.

Is the blu ray copy you have a little different from the dragon dynasty edition?

Police Story def a classic everyone should own - hope you feel better! How did you catch a cold wearing a mask and practicing social distance tho!

Somehow my kid got a cold and passed it to everyone in the house and I had very little time I could take off work to rest so I just couldn't get rid of it. I have barely been outside since March and I end up the sickest of us all. 😂

This review is tempting me to buy the Criterion copy.

If you can find it for a good price it is definitely worth it! I basically never buy criterion releases at full value because it's just too much. But there are at least three 50% off sales throughout the year, two through criterion and one through Barnes and Noble, plus you can find discounts on their stuff around holidays usually.

I bought the Criterion Police Story set mainly for the Son of the Incredibly Strange Films episode. I had seen that episode when it aired on , I believe it was, The Discovery Channel in the USA in '89, had recorded it back then, absolutely loved it, but my copy was of pretty poor picture quality, so I was glad Criterion included it here. I wish someone would put all the episodes of both The Incredibly Strange Film Show & The Son Of The Incredibly Strange Film Show as a series on blu-ray, all the episodes were fun ( there was at least one other episode related to Hong Kong cinema, it featured the films of Tsui Hark). How does this version compare to the Hong Kong Rescue version?

I don't have the Hong Kong Rescue version of this film yet. I held off on buying it because I was going to buy this version first. When there is a top of the line legit commercial release of a film that Hong Kong Rescue has also released I try to buy the legit version first to support the companies that are putting out these films, then get around to the Hong Kong Rescue version. Probably soon I will pick up police story now that I have watched this one. I'm not sure what source they used for their release, so I wouldn't be able to compare the visuals without seeing it, although I have heard nothing but very positive things about the HKR police story release.

Any thoughts on Maggie’s portrayal of Mei (Ka Kui’s Live in girlfriend) ?

It's a shame Police Story box sets are never all three in Western markets. It's always sold as a trilogy in Hong Kong. Also a shame you've got to order the Hong Kong bluray to get the proper Police Story 3.

The rights to Police Story 3 were for years owned by a major studio, which was unwililng to let it go to anyone else, hence no trilogy releases. However, from what I've heard, that is no longer the case, and PS3 will eventually be coming to UK blu ray in a proper edition.

Mine says it's a 4k transfer from the film

I know there are now 4k versions of the Police Story movies. Eureka put the first three out in a box set in 4k in the UK, and there is a US 4k release of Supercop (which is Police Story III) from 88 Films.
