A step by step Polaris ATV front CV boot replacement video. We specifically focus on how to replace the outer CV boot, but the steps also apply to replacing the inner CV boot. Note that the CV boot is sometimes also called a half shaft boot or a drive shaft boot, so if you’re looking for a video that shows how to change a drive shaft boot, you’re in the right place.

Enjoyed your video. We have the Polaris RZR XP 1000 and Wildcat X ATV's and we tour with them, they are tough and hold up well on our Las Vegas trails.

Great video. I thought I needed to replace the entire axle, but after removal and inspection I do not. I am just going to put new boots on. While breaking the axle down, I did not pay attention to which end of the axle went into the cup and which end went into the wheel hub. I noticed a slight difference in length on each end from the end of the axle to the set of grooves for the boot to sit. Do you know if the longer distance between the end of the axle and the grooves goes into the cup or the hub?

What is the better method for replacing the inner boot, remove the outer CV joint and boot and keep the axle shaft in place, OR remove the axle and then the inner CV joint? Does the inner CV joint remove same as the outer joint, just a clip ring?

  • @PartzillaParts

Typically you replace both at the same time. If your boot is in good condition, you don't have to.

It comes off. Your choice to "replace" it. It is recommended to replace both at the same time.

That is the most backwards way I've ever seen to do that. Why wouldn't you take the shaft off at the front differential and pull it out instead of disassembling the whole front end?

Please don't skip important bits, like how you separated the ball joint...

  • @axispowerdiesel

This is a lazy and incorrect way to rebuild your CV, please people disassemble and completely clean out the race, cage, and balls before filling with new grease. Any dirt that was allowed in from the torn boot is still in there!
