Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4 -- Front Hub Work
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video I put the front hub back together on my 1999 Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4. The problem I was having is that I only had 3 wheels spin when the 4x4 was on. I replaced the armature plate and that seemed to fix the problem.

This is an old vid, but people are still viewing it and it has a glaring error and should be deleted. DO NOT GREASE THE Hilliard clutch - in two separate paragraphs one on page 271 and one page 272 it describes coating the Hiliard with the lubricant specified in Chapter Three. On page 270 under the description for installing a new retainer spring onto the Hilliard it states to "Apply a light coat of grease to the rollers" prior to inserting them into the clutch hub. The Hilliard will not work if greased. The specified lubricant is Demand Drive fluid (similar to automatic transmission fluid). The clutch runs in oil, not grease!

When grease gets between the armature and the armature ring it will not work, or be weak at best..
No problem. When I first discovered the problem I kept trying to find a useful video on youtube. I figured I would try to put something together that would help others.
One of the best videos I've ever seen
thanks!!! just got a 2001 polaris scrambler 500 4x4 took it for a spin today and notice it was just spinning on 3 wheels,,was kinda disapointed ,,,feel better now knowing its a easy fix!!! thanks a lot keep up the good work!!!!
You rock for going the extra mile to show us the book. Thank you my Friend. Be safe :)
tank a lot I have the same kind of issue on my TB350 '93, I'll go take a look at my armature plate soon, nice video, well done
Great video! thanks for sharing. these kind of videos is what makes youtube great!
@johnathonmelby Its a setting on the torque wrench. Newton metre is a unit of torque (also called "moment") in the SI system. The symbolic form is N m or N·m,[1] and sometimes hyphenated newton-metre. One newton metre is equal to the torque resulting from a force of one newton applied perpendicularly to a moment arm which is one metre long.
Great video. It helped me out
@nickelfer Something is staying engaged when the 4x4 is turned off. My first suggestion would be to take it to a shop. If you try to fix it yourself I would pull the hub apart and make sure nothing is stuck together and make sure everything looks to be in good condition. Replace anything that looks damaged, grease everything up, and put it back together. I have not experienced your problem so I don't know for sure. I will search on the internet for some suggestions. Good Luck
awsome video! helped me out alot. What would help people out ,would be to put the torque specs on here for hub nut and what kind or fluid you are putting in your hubs
@ghola7 I was amazed because the armature plate appeared to be ok, but it was my problem. This video was from almost a year ago and the 4x4 is still working great.
@gliderskier I bought most of my parts from either the polaris dealer or ebay.
@pyrokiddownthesreet I have not had any issues with the rear end yet, so I don't know what is involved with fixing it. If I get a chance I will check out the book and see what it says.
To anyone that is going to do this themselves, be very careful and know what you are doing. You should not grease any parts they will all be covered in hub oil when you fill the hubs. Covering them in grease can cause the 4x4 to engage when you don't want it to. Always make sure that your clearance is .0015" on you electric coil. If it is less it can cause the 4x4 to engage when you don't want it to. If only one wheel engages, it will pull the ATV that way and most likely throw you on the ground. People have died because of improper servicing of these wheel hubs, this is part of the reason that polaris has now switched to the new centralized clutch. Basically a big centered hub inside the diff. This way if the 4x4 accidentally engages it will not yank the ATV to on side. If you are going to be doing this always replace the spring that holds in the rollers and use the right tool. If you over stretch the spring by not using the special tool it can cause only one wheel to engage at high speeds because the force is to great for the weak spring. I am a polaris tech and I have seen many people get hurt because of trying to fix these hubs.

Were is the hub oil/drain spot on the Polaris scrambler 500
On Demand Fluid, and the weight comes with the entire thing.
i had the same problem i didnt know it was that easy! how bent was the armature plate? i had a 1994 polaris 400L with only 3 wheel drive. and how do you tork the final nut on there?
I took my 400 2 stroke out yesterday and ended up in 3 wheel drive. I found both front cv boots were completely cut open and grease gone. No popping, clicking, or anything....just left front wheel not pulling. Does a open cv boot being exposed to water mud cause hub damage??? I’m totally lost on this as I’ve never had a 4wd ( I’m a old sport quad rider). It was working fine until I got it into water I bought it from original owner. It’s a 99 with original owner and still has original tires. They are barely worn at all and the quad has barely been used. So mine shouldn’t be worn at all
Great Video, I just found out my one front tire does not spin in 4 wheel as well. So I will be doing this very soon.

i have a 1999 scrambler it has the same problem and have you had any problems with torque steer?
Do you know where i could get a rebuild kit for this hub? My clutch inside shredded apart.
I have a question my 4 by 4 on the left side is not I did replace the both axles and is right side is working perfect but left side only axle spin they told it's probably my hud not working ty
what was the torque spec on the axle nut
@BigjermsGarage where could i get one of these wrenches for cheap?
@codplayer108 1st- I'm not a mechanic and never claimed to be one. (and it's spelled mechanic, not machanic) 2nd- The book was put in the video for others to see it in case they need to see that section. 3rd- The armature plate on the polaris was damaged. 4th- It's amazing that once I finished working on the front end all 4 wheels spin now, so your comment about 3 wheels and dif lock makes no sense. 5th- You need more practice at COD
i have a problem but when mines in 4x4 all wheels spin but while im in 2x4 a 3rd wheel is spinning do u have any suggestions
Wish i could find that service manual online!
i have a polaris scrambler 500 and when i have it in two wheel drive the left right wheel still tries to spin jerking the handel bars out of my hands can eany one tell me y or how to fix it if u can that would be great thanks.
@JjEjFjF I am not worried about it. He is a kid who is most likely in middle school and thinks he knows everything. I admit that I am not a mechanic.
Do i need that armature plat?
Hey CJ armor i put polaris hub fluid in it i think it's cuz it's loose
what is the tourque specs on that main nut????
@ELLISD16 Not yet
@WOOZYBIFFO420 Thank you so much for the feedback. When I made that video I thought it might help others because I was struggling so much with it. Whenever I need to work on something I look on youtube for a video. Thanks again.

You MUST use Polaris hub oil only! No grease may enter this entire assembly or magnetic clutch will not work right.
Does anyone know the specs for the front hub on a 2000 Polaris scrambler 500 4x4?
@1cumminsdiesel yes
@ the 4 minute mark in the video I flip the book through the section with the torque.
Yikes I just realized I filled my Hubs right to just about the top when I drained them. Hope I didnt do any damage...
so for you guys that want the conversions in ft-lbs here they are 18.6 n*M=13.71 ft-lb 14 n*M=10.32 ft-lb never tighten past 16n*M=11.80 ft-lb
I read you are not suppose to put grease in there. the hub fluid provides the lubrication
@skeeterhandyman9572

Correct NEVER use grease in this hub assembly.
Does any one know if a cailper from a 99 scrambler will fit on a 99 sportsmanship 4x4
@johnathonmelby Check out 3:55 of the vdieo-- step 12, 13, 14.
DO NOT Put any grease in these hubs, or they will not engage properly. The hub takes Direct Drive fluid from Polaris.
I tried everything I think my magnets to week on mine can that happen
I have a question is it better to put gear oil or Grease on what you are working on bearings bearings 4x4
@BigjermsGarage
4 жыл бұрын
Not grease, that's a mistake I made apparently. I never had any issues, but most comments since making this video have been about me messing up and putting grease on it.
any advice on working on the rear end? ive a 04 scrambler 500 and the rear bearings seem to be going out alot..
@markhoffman5954

I replaced the rear bearings on both my 2000, 500 scramblers. Long process but fairly easy. If your bearings are going out a lot it may be one tire is inflated more than the other causing axel drag and undo wear on the bearings OR you rear axle is bent
@BigjermsGarage ok thankx
Mine is stuck in "3 wheel drive" too.
@BigjermsGarage well i dont know what N*m is 144 inch i have never heard of anything like that
thanks i think a newton meter is a waste of time thats why i will just look up the conversions to ft pounds to make it sympol lol
found out all it was, was a leaky front shock no hub problems yay
Something that you never do is lossen the castle nut or ant nut that has to be torqued with the torque rench it will screw up the rench and give you the wrong mesure ment
My Polaris scrambler 500 has evey thing on it for the awd but will not engage in awd/4x4

@johnathonmelby
Ya dude it will fit its the same thing
On the left front tire of my 2004 sportsman 400 its been leakin fluid from the back of the brake disc i think that it is the hub got anything ?
Omg grease?
Como desarmar la trcción de lantera
THX for the video. i did this procedure on my 99 scrambler 500 and now the speedometer does not work. any ideas of what i did wrong? thx again.

speed sensor is mounted to your brake caliper with one bolt. A wire from it runs parallel to your brake lines. Check all connections on that wire.
@johnathonmelby Check out ebay or a store like Harbor Freight.
i have a 1999 scrambler it has the same problem
I take it you have the 4 wheel drive on at this time
There's no such thing as a sportsmanship. It's a Sportsman...
please tell me what N*m means in touque
NO GREACE at all. that is a no no . just ask a dealer if you don't believe us.

That's clearly grease and he said it was grease so I think it's grease lol. No good!
I WAS A TEC AT POLARIS IT ONLY STATES TO GREASE THE AXLE SEAL NOTEVERYTHING!
newton meter confuses me why cant they just make it easy for us
should
Well I now know why mine wasn't working. someone put it together wrong
there's a seal back there, if it's leaking, the seal is torn. Buy a new CV Seal.
Don't put grease in the hub. Demand drive fluid only. This video should be taken down.
