*Imported SLEEZE Continues to BETRAY his Audience With OBVIOUS MISTAKES* *Mt Ember, Magmar, Ponyta, and Moltos* Do KZreadrs make mistakes on purpose to get people to comment?! I'm sure they do, but I actually messed up...my decrepit boomer brain lumped all the Sevii Islands together, but you CAN get both Moltos and Magmar after obtaining the Volcanobadge. Ponyta has also been moved to Mt. Ember. All three are pretty bad, bottom of C. Lapras is also level 25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still Sea tier tho. Thank you for coming to my TED talk, and look forward to the next tier list which will also have mistakes that have to be fixed in a pinned comment.

I cannot describe the feelings I had when I caught a Zubat, evolved it into Golbat, and immediately had a high enough friendship to evolve it the next level, only for it to immediately stop evolving because I didn't have the national dex. I was just before fighting Erika, where it would've been most useful as a Crobat, and my heart was completely broken. Crobat is one of my absolute favorite pokemon out there, and having to wait until the post game started to use it was soul crushing.

Vulpix has the unique benefit of _actually learning Flamethrower at a reasonable level._ Meanwhile Growlithe doesn't learn it until Lv.50, so have fun with the Game Corner, because it's the only place you can get TM35. Ponyta doesn't get it at all, Flareon's waiting until 52, and Magmar gets it at 41, but comes with the downside of being Magmar. Ninetales is just the least-frustrating Fire type for people who didn't take Charmander at the start, beyond just wrangling Moltres during the Sevii trip. Meanwhile Golbat has the extra annoyance of it trying to evolve but being unable to every time it levels up once its Friendship reaches a good level.

For anyone curious, the only Pokemon that moved tiers through the generations (in other words, from his updated Red/Blue tier list at the end of his "Charizard Reviews My Gen 1 Tier List and Puts it on Blast (Burn)" video to this one) are: Nidoran male, Nidoran female, Clefairy nerfed from Nidokingdom to S Diglett nerfed from S to A Sandshrew, Gastly, Drowzee nerfed from A to B Tentacool nerfed from A to Sea Caterpie buffed from A to S Bellsprout, Snorlax nerfed from B to C With the post-production comment in mind Omanyte, Kabuto and Aerodactyl nerfed from Sea, Sea and C to D, D and D respectively Mankey, Jynx buffed from C to B Cubone potentially buffed from C to A if caught with Thick Club Lapras buffed from C to Sea Hitmonchan buffed from D to C Magmar moved from C to Unknown Dungeon despite being obtainable before the Champion fight and not given a hypothetical tiering like Moltres was. Gonna assume it'd still be C. All other Pokemon stayed in the same tiers they were in. 79 total Pokemon (counting Moltres and Magmar but not Mewtwo) and only 19 moved tiers at all.

I can't agree with the Machop placement. Unlike Mankey, it doesn't come at a time where it's useful, in fact, I think it struggles to find a single spot where it can even be useful. Erika, the Rockets, Koga, and Sabrina all resist it. Blaine and Giovanni gets washed up by Sea Tier, so you won't even use it for neutral bouts against them. Maybe you use it for Lorelei but at that point, I'd consider it to be a "late game" Pokemon like Moltres, but you had to dump buckets of EXP on it throughout the whole game. It's not even that good against standard route trainers who are usually going to be the poisonous Biker punks, the Beauties who use the Grass/Poison lines, or the Bird Keepers. It also does nothing inside of the Pokemon Tower and has an attrocious match up against the Rival. It's a pretty awful Pokemon in FRLG. A Pokemon like Meowth would do way better than it as it gets free STAB Secret Power early on, Water Pulse for the Hikers in the mid game, and the Shadow Ball Game Corner TM for Sabrina.

@@rockvent918 @rockvent91 Not many things in this game do. Charmeleon, for example, can't even one shot mons in Erika's gym. Here's a quick, theoretical calc to illustrate my point: Lvl 31 0 SpA Charmeleon Ember vs. Lvl 24 0 HP / 0 SpD Gloom: 38-48 (54.2 - 68.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO Lvl 31 0 Atk Persian Secret Power vs. Lvl 24 0 HP / 0 Def Gloom: 33-39 (47.1 - 55.7%) -- 62.5% chance to 2HKO Persian's output is better than Charmeleon, and only slightly worse than it in situations where Charmeleon is considered to be good in. It even has Limber for efficiency against Stun Spore. That's the utility of a Normal type; it's always a decent option. So long as it's decently Leveled, I guarantee Meowth and Persian will at minimum 2HKO everything you put against it with Secret Power, Shadow Ball, and Water Pulse. I'm not saying it's an A tier mon, of course, but I think Meowth is underrated. It'll definitely get worse in the late game but it can at least sweep Agatha

Gonna make a separate comment for this but I saw someone else mention that Onix doesn't deserve to be put in a tier of it's own and I agree. More specifically, I'd like to compare Onix to Ditto. Ditto is forced to give up a turn every single time it is sent out, it is likely to have less HP than whatever it is turning into especially as you get further and further into the game, it is forced to always speed tie after transforming rather than having any chance to ever outspeed (Quick Powder was introduced in gen 4, gen 3 only has Metal Powder which raises defense for Ditto) and if it turns into a grass, fire, water, poison, electric or ice type (or steel but that's already electric) your STAB moves are basically useless as all of those types resist themselves. You get the double edged sword of getting super effective STAB moves if you turn into a ghost or dragon type which matters for like...the Agatha and Lance fights and that's basically it and then every other type will do neutral damage to itself. Onix is at least guaranteed to do well against flying, bug, fire, poison, rock and normal types since it resists all of those types. Slightly less noteworthy for fire since that'll still be hitting its weaker special defense. Onix is still awful given it can't evolve, has 2 4x weaknesses in grass and water along with 4 other weaknesses and has a pitiful attack stat but I'd say it's at least better than Ditto. The TL;DR being Onix is at least guaranteed to do well against some specific types while Ditto isn't guaranteed to do well against anything at all.

I'd definitely put Charmander in S-tier myself. While on paper he shouldn't fare well against Brock, from anecdotal evidence it seems like Brock has intentionally gimped AI which rarely uses Rock Tomb, and in my experience this fight is consistently easy (assuming Charmander has gotten all the exp from prior trainers). Misty is the hardest fight in the game for Charmeleon, but by then you have this line's ace in the hole: Mega Kick. 120 base power, 75 accuracy, available right after Mt Moon. It might take a try or two extra, but once you're past this point, nothing can get in Charizard's way for the rest of the game. PS. these videos are real fun, keep up the good work!

Big agree with Caterpie's placement. I replayed leafgreen recently (For staryu) and butterfree's sleep-powder was very useful for a long time along with it's resistances until I finally replaced it. It can also learn Thief if you need something to damage misty's starmie and accurately put it to sleep. It's a superb early game pokemon. I'm curious about Doduo's placement since it can be caught in the area just past Celadon where you obtain Fly just in time to prey upon eirika's gym and then all the fighting types on cycling road afterwards. I didn't think it was that late to pick up. Lastly, Shadow Ball Snorlax laughs at all the psychic types in the game along with Gary's/Sabrina's Alakazaam which is a pokemon that can still cause troubles if you're not prepared. It definitely made my run a lot easier because of that.

I know hating on Onix is a meme on this channel, but honestly it doesn't deserve its own tier, it's not the worst pokemon in the game. Ditto and Porygon are way, way worse. You can overlevel Onix, teach it some usable moves and beat pretty much any pokemon that way, but that isn't an option for Ditto. It's stuck with whatever garbage the opponent has, with its terrible no-EV stats and bad moves, minus a turn and only 5 PP in all moves, and that isn't enough to beat any trainer's full team And Porygon... well, you either need to play the slots to win 9999 coins, which requires save scumming and probably takes longer than just beating the game (with an Onix). Or you must spend 200 THOUSAND dollars to buy the coins, and I'm pretty sure you don't get that much money from beating all the trainers in the game unless you rematch them, so this method basically means you will have already won the game by the time you can obtain it as well. If you can beat the entire game in the time it takes to OBTAIN the pokemon, surely it has to be the worst one

Yeah. Onix also can do fairly well considering how ling Normal moves stay in use. Its main problem in Kanto games is that you get it late. In games like Platinum, Onix is incredible, because you get it super early game, where its physical bulk is basically untouchable. I've had many a nuzlocke where an Onix was basically the only thing that kept me alive theough the Windworks Purugly fight.

Actually in FR/LG Lapras is gotten at level 25, it was 15 in the original games. And Jynx is also way more useful than Mr Mime, considering how much Ice typing is valuable in Kanto. I also agree with the Charmander comment relating to its usability, it's still the worst of the Kanto starts on an in game playthrough don't get me wrong, but in the OG games because Brock had no Rock moves the fact he was "Rock type" didn't matter at all since you could just manage by through its much weaker Special and stall its Bide turns with Growl. It's really ONLY Misty that gave Charmander trouble and after that point its even pretty much every other gym afterwards, which is a contrast to Bulbasuar who basically is walled the entire rest of the game after Surge until you get to Giovanni. I think MU spread across the game is also important because you want to consider how much each mon holds throughout the game after all this is basing solely on how you can do the whole game with them. And while early game is most important due to your starter being your most dominate member it doesn't invalidate how much its MUs are throughout rest of the game and with all the Bikers and TR members who carry Poison types (and the occasional Drowsee) as well as Picnickers with grass types and bird keepers and Bulbasuar is really going to get walled by a good majority of Kanto fights overall. Even moreso than Charmander who's initial struggle ends with Misty and only has trouble with Rock Tunnel, but that's about it, and while the gap is larger in FG/LG due to Brock's access to Rock Tomb the MU spread still applies. After all if this is based on how well they can do on a team throughout the game then every MU should apply, if accessibility is also a factor too. And Bulbasuar is also useless against every major fight after Surge until Giovanni and only does well against Bruno (at least in FR/LG) whereas due to the worse movesets and auto crit Razor Leaf Lorelei could at least be managed with typing alone aside from maybe Lapras. Whereas Lorelei's most likely going to 2 hit KO you with Ice Beam in the remakes, so its more of a semi even MU. Where you might KO two mons, but that's about it. Then its walled by Agitha and Lance. Jolteon is the superior electric type in the game, but Raichu can be considered due to its better movepool. Because all really Jolteon has is Thunderbolt and Bite. Unless you get lucky with a Hidden Power TM from Meowth pickup and even then it needs to be special, whereas Raichu is Thunderbolt + Iron Tail, Brick Break, Mega Punch, Strength, Hidden Power etc.. Its worth considering if you value more power or moverpool because they both satisfy the same electric niche only Jolteon hits harder and is faster.

Good video! I think Ekans could stand to move up to bottom C tier because of Intimidate. It's good death fodder. Send it in, it'll die because it's frail, and you get both a free switch and an attack drop. You can carry your one strong lead Pokemon and your HM slave, and then fill the rest of the party with Ekans for whenever you need to remove a stat debuff, use a revive, or weaken something. It's a small niche, but it can contribute in some way with no EXP or TM investment at all This is assuming D tier means "can't contribute at all without heavy investment"

Hey Imported Cheese. I'd let to tell you an experiment I had with Pokémon Red. I played through Pokémon Red with some of the worst Pokémon in the game. This team made up of Lickitung, Wigglytuff, Golbat, Parasect, Farfetch'd, & Onix. People often say Onix is the worst gen 1 Pokémon, but with my experience. I have to say that Golbat is worse. Golbat's move pool sucks in gen 1, the best moves it can learn are normal type moves, and besides using non stab normal type moves, all it can do is confuse opponents. With Onix you can get the tm for dig or earthquake, and even with it's poor attack stat, it's still not that terrible. It's good for fighting against physical attacking Pokémon. Golbat was never useful in my playthrough, I only used it as a last resort during important battles

Solid list but I have some disagreements. Ill point out the placements I dispute the most though. Clefairy: Bit too high I feel. Dont get me wrong its good but its too heavily reliant on Tm's and its stats aren't the greatest. Caterpie: Way too high. Sleep powder is nice and it is really nice to have early game, but it quickly falls off. Its just too frail and slow to really make much use of its good special and its niche of sleep powder outside early game. Definitely doesn't deserve S tier. Mr.Mime: S tier is a little too high for it but its still really good. Even Kadabra outclasses it though. Pikachu: Should be higher for its early game utility. Its nice to have against misty but in addition It also has a better movepool than most of the electrics. Its inferior to Jolteon stat wise for sure but Jolteon also isn't around during the first half of the game like Pika is, especially for Misty and Raichu remains consistently useful throughout the game and doesn't fall off. Vaporeon: Should be higher. One of the best water types in the game. Its very bulky and hits really hard. Not to mention its ability water absorb makes it a really good water check backup in case you lost your water counter. Snorlax: Waaaaaay too low. In fact Id go as far as to say its the second best pokemon in the game only behind Alakazam. It matches up incredibly well against pretty much every special attacker in the game and even physical attackers have difficulty against it. Normal stab with earthquake coverage basically allows it to annihilate anything and everything it wants to. Its slow sure but its bulk more than makes up for it. Your argument that you have to use healing items on it more also confuses me and Im not sure I understand the argument here. Is it because it has more hp? If so that sounds like it should be more of a good thing than a bad thing. Growlithe: Also too low. Its movepool is shallow sure but its stats are really good once it evolves and it has intimidate which is the best ability in the game on top of it. Definitely deserves to be a tier above Vulpix easily. Vulpix has all of the downsides of being a fire type and none of the plus sides that Growlithe has. Chansey: I would agree with this placement if it wasn't for the fact you can teach it seismic toss with the move tutor for reliable damage. If we're not taking into account difficulty in catching Chansey, then it should be higher since its basically a giant middle finger to every single special attacker in the game.

I don't know if anyone who has more knowledge than I do in the Generation 2 Pokemon moves, but in regards to the move Rollout, I know that its base stat is 30 and doubles with each successive hits up to 5 hits totalling 480, and it's doubled if Defence Curl is used beforehand (base stat 60 - 960), but how does the STAB bonus affect the move? Does it only affect the first use/hit of the move (base stat 45 instead of 30 without the use of Defense Curl and base stat 90 instead of 60 after using Defense Curl)? Or does STAB affect each successive hit of Rollout? I would be interested to know as I am looking into beginning my foray into pokemon solo runs in Generation 2.

The holy trinity against the elite 4 is: Thunderbolt, Psychic, Ice Beam. Any mon that can learn all 3 has an easy time sweeping the whole thing. This is a huge part of why the Nidos, Clefable, and Wigglytuff are so good. Wigglytuff is massively underrated. You can evolve it almost as soon as you get Jigglypuff (just make sure it knows Pound by then), it has higher attack so makes good use of Secret Power and Return (and Mega Kick early on), it learns the holy trinity, and will pretty much have a type advantage against every gym starting with Erika. This thing is definitively S-tier, albeit worse than the Nidos and Clefairy due to the slower start. The Jynx you trade for will get hidden power electric, and can get Psychic and Ice Punch with ease. Getting boosted exp also helps her trivialize the game as soon as you can get a super rod. Lapras is also obtained around the same time, gets all 3 moves, and is amazing for the rest of the game. Being at lvl 15 isn't that big a deal; it can immediately learn Surf, and train against the scrubs in Silph Co. By the time it's getting to lvl 30, it's sweeping the rest of the game. Starmie has worse availability, but gets Recover with better stats than Lapras or Jynx. I'd consider it a bit worse than the other two, but they're all A tier. Poliwrath gets Ice Beam, Psychic, and Brick Break to crush Lorelei. Doesn't have Thunderbolt against Gyarados, and gets hit hard by Alakazam, but putting it in A or B tier is appropriate. Golduck's stats are bad enough that I don't think it goes above B tier. Psychic and Ice Beam is still good though, and decent attack to hit Alakazam hard is okay. Slowbro being slow is annoying, but Psychic + Ice Beam is still amazing. This thing easily solos the 7th and 8th gyms, and the Elite 4. Definitely wants leftovers though. I'd say B-tier for this one. Meowth isn't anything special for combat, but FR/LG pickup is amazing. Getting 4 or 5 to throw onto your team while your main pokemon does the fighting is a recommended strategy. Utility alone would put it in S tier, unless you explicitly don't count that because they're not fighting. Free rare candies and nuggets lets you get good TMs from the game corner, and having access to berries is nice against Misty, Surge, and Erika. Ghastly is A tier. It does have worse availability than most in the tier, but it's still mid-game. It's hard to overstate just how many trainers do absolutely nothing to a ghost-poison type. Ghastly doesn't care about normal types, fighting types, or poison types; so a huge chunk of trainers are completely free regardless of what level you catch it at, including the grunts at the top of the very tower you catch Ghastly at! Psychic and Thunderbolt is excellent for the Elite 4, and Giga Drain means it trivializes Giovanni too. It does need help against Sabrina, but a barely trained Snorlax can solo her anyways. Most of the game is free, and Ghastly is a contender for S-tier, despite worse availability than the others in the tier. Drowzee/Hypno are also A tier. They're decidedly worse than Kadabra and Mr Mime, but they're still great, and obtained at around the same time. Confusion and Psychic are both great moves, and unlike the other psychic types they have decent physical attack. They make good use of Secret Power, Return, and Brick Break, which really helps against enemy psychic-types. No Thunderbolt (unlike Kadabra/MrMime), not as fast, lower special attack; they don't get to be S-tier. Exeggcutor is B-tier. Psychic and Giga Drain, plus an instant evolution, are all great. Don't wait for it to learn Sleep Powder before evolution, it's not worth it. Can also use Return against Sabrina and Blue's Alakazam. Not a good choice against Blaine, but that gym is free for so many others; no big deal. This thing easily solos Koga, Sabrina, Giovanni, and most of the elite 4 (until Lance). Snorlax being slow is annoying; but you can potentially get Leftovers the moment you catch it, and even at base level it counters Sabrina's entire gym. It's great against every remaining gym, in fact (Surf against Blaine/Giovanni). As for the elite 4, Return and Shadow Ball are good coverage (there are no steel types), and it only really needs to fear Bruno, of all things. B-tier. You do need Surf to get it, but once you do, Electabuzz can learn Thunderbolt+Psychic; 2/3 of the holy trinity. It doesn't have Ice Beam against Lance, but it can get easy exp against all the swimmers, Silph Co, Blue, and the first 3 members of the Elite 4. Unless it's at a very high level, not good against Giovanni. It needs to sweep with Psychic, or it'll get one-shot by Earthquake. It's B-tier. Others have mentioned it, but you can get Magmar and Moltres before the 8th gym. Magmar learns Psychic, and has decent attack with Return, so it's decent against the elite 4. Overall, better than Moltres who really just has Flamethrower and flying/normal moves. Even Arcanine/Ninetales have dig and decent availability. Moltres is probably C (thanks to being at lvl 50 immediately) and Magmar is probably B or C, assuming you didn't use the Psychic TM on something else. Easy access to Brick Break (you can buy the TM) helps out a lot of mons. I don't think this really changes the placement of most normal/ground/fighting types, and it's odd this didn't get mentioned in the video. Machamp, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, and Primeape all appreciate it. It also helps Beedrill (B-tier), of all things. Pinsir is better than Scyther as a result (better movepool). For those two, it comes down to Pinsir's movepool, vs Scyther getting the Swords Dance / Agility combo. Farfetch'd gets Swords Dance and Agility; a rare combo in gen 1. Still worse than mons that don't need to set up, but this makes it usable at least. C-tier. Kangaskhan gains experience faster than Tauros, which I think is enough to put it slightly higher. A minor nitpick. I would honestly put Rhyhorn in the Don't Bother tier. It can put in work against Blaine and Koga, I guess. It's completely useless against the elite 4, and is disadvantaged against Sabrina, Giovanni, and every remaining Blue fight. Surge is already beaten; ground types aren't very good anymore (Dugtrio and the Nidos being the exceptions). Ponyta as well; you have to wait until 1 Island to get it. By then, Growlithe and Vulpix (who are better) have been available for ages, Magmar is dramatically better than all 3 late-game, and Moltres does what Rapidash does without needing any training.

Squirtle is also notable for getting access to Bite by level up. In this Gen, Bite is dark type so Blastoise actually has an option to combat the psychic types in Kanto-especially Sabrina's. That isn't to say its your best option, Snorlax with the Shadow Ball TM (which is physical this generation so he will be attacking with his 110 attack stat super effectively on physically frail targets) can go to town on the psychics and his slowness isn't a huge issue to to his fat hp and special defense stats plus Nidoking eventually learns Megahorn so as long as he can outspeed and ko before he gets hit he's another good option; but, it's an ability that the other starters don't get considering neither get an option to hit psychic super effectively and Venasaur is weak to psychic. Normally, getting a unique advantage on one type isn't a great upside, but you have to remember-this is Kanto; there are no dark types; your only steel type psychic resist is Magneton; and your only ghost and bug types either have no good stab moves moves, are weak to psychic, or both. Not to mention, over 1/3 of the dex is poison type so there's a non-zero chance it's hitting you for super effective on at least one member of your team. In addition to that, Sabrina is probably the hardest gym leader in Kanto and her Alakazam can sweep you if it gets enough calm minds and you don't have a plan specifically tailor made for it.

@@ImportedCheese True; but to get Surf you would have to take a detour to the Safari Zone multiple towns away in Fuchsia, know where it is, get it, come all the way back to Saffron, apply it, and then fight Jasmine. It’s not impossible or even that tedious, but it’s a lot of extra work for a marginal boost in power that removes a flinch chance you’re admittedly not getting unless the opponent is paralyzed but it’s something. Also, in that time you could just use Megahorn Nidoking with enough grinding to not worry about psychic attacks, Shadow Ball TM Snorlax, or if you wanna meme, Explosion Graveler/Golem will definitely kill the opposing Alakazam if you don’t want to use Blastoise. I know that the mid game of Kanto is kinda open world so you could choose to do Koga before Jasmine so you wouldn’t be going out of your way specifically for Surf, but at least how I play I always do Saffron before Fuchsia because it’s just right next to Celadon and Lavender so it’s a bit inconvenient to do Fuchsia and then Saffron-especially with the level curve.

The whole point of the game is to assemble and level up your ideal team of 6 before entering victory road. Both Hitmonlee and Snorlax come before Sabrina and possibly Koga depending on how you play. Charmander CAN solo Brock in FRLG...if you dump all the experience from Viridian Forest trainers into it. Brock's AI isn't quite smart enough to spam Rock Tomb. Poliwrath is pretty mediocre, but WATER ABSORB Poliwrath can come in surprisingly clutch. That plus Brick Break can help you muscle past some tough lategame tanks like Lorelei's team. And if you pick Charmander, Poli pretty much blanks half the Champion's team, even in Round 2. On that subject, I think it's worth placing some extra value on Pokémon who play well against the Elite Four and Champion, since that's when the games always hit you with a level spike. Being able to overcome that disadvantage without grinding or spamming revives helps a lot. For instance, as good as Nidoking is for most of the game, it can struggle to put a dent in many of the final opponents because there's no big juicy Earthquake targets and a ton of Flying, Water and Psychic users. But Starmie's BoltBeam coverage slices them all to pieces without being weak to them in return. Likewise, Chimchar stomps all of DP but actually has a hard time breaking through Cynthia's big hitters like Chomp and Milotic, which has probably contributed to her reputation as such a monster.

Gonna disagree on you with mixed attackers. They actually do *better* because of the switch to Effort Values and the addition of natures. At least, in terms of this tier list. Think about it this way, you aren't going to EV train in this kind of playthrough. So, you're going to have a pretty even spread no matter what. This means that the specialist attackers will do poorly, as they now don't have their main stat maxed, likely. Whereas the mixed attacker is pretty decent in both. At the very least, it's not wasted EVs. I'll also add that, unless you spend extra time looking for and resetting for good natures, mixed attackers are more likely to get a nature that benefits at least one of their attacking stats. And if their nature is bad for attack, they can focus on special attack. Whereas if you have a specialist and they have a bad offensive nature, they're basically worthless.

  • @ImportedCheese

    @ImportedCheese

    2 жыл бұрын

I kinda agree...but I also kinda disagree lol. Back in the Gen 4 list, I basically said what you said here regarding Chimchar being a mixed attacker - since he uses both attacking stats, you don't get any wasted EVs. I agree that mixed attackers fare better under the EV system than physical/special attackers. But the thing is, Chimchar was never in a game with stat xp. Under stat xp, Nidoking had both attacking stats maxed out guaranteed, and compared to Gen 1 Nido, FR/LG Nido has been nerfed by EVs...is what I was trying to say.

Fun fact: you can cheese the Rocket Game corner with a metronome set at I think 115 bpm. With the right timing you can get jackpots very consistently. I wouldn’t actually recommend using this to get the Pokémon the corner offers since even the best ones are kid without excessive grinding such as Dragonite. I would however recommend this for TMs to make already great or kinda good Pokémon into amazing or solid Pokémon. Snorlax can learn Shadow Ball this way and because it’s physical this gen you can kill ghost and psychic types consistently so long as you don’t get statused; which if you paralyze or sleep the opponent with Thunder Wave from something like Jolteon or use Sleep Powder from Vileplume or another decent grass type, you getting screwed by RNG probably won’t happen. *probably*

While maybe not in a pure speed run setting, consider this: Solo run with your starter until past Cerulean gym, catch 5 meowths. While it's a completely up to chance, those meowths have chance to pick up nuggets, tm 10's and pp ups. Spending minimally and selling everything you get from 5 pick up drops can net you enough funds to nab a Dratini from Celadon Game Corner. In Fire Red, it costs 2800 coins and comes at level 18. While it costs 4600 in leafgreen and comes at level 24. You can use rare candies in FireRed to get it to 22 where it learns Dragon Rage (no need for LG). At that point you're sitting on top of a huge EXP mound that is Rocket Hideout, followed by Pokémon Tower and Silph Co. All those combined is enough to carry your Dratini into Dragonite. From there the rest of the run can be carried by it.

I love Onix under a game design perspective. It's horrible for battles, but it was not created with this purpose. It is a tutorial boss. (Though I believe it should have a pre-evolution for this purpose) Onix is the first boss you ever find in the first pokémon game. It has a low attack so it gives you a bunch of turns to figure out about what to do to beat it, try out different moves and discover that Special attacks actually deal more damage to it, huge defense so you have to change strategy from the tackle-your-way-through-caterpies you have been using until now, and it is fast so it attacks before your starter, meaning it's a tutorial for how speed, defense, and special work. The low HP is just to make it killable in case you just have a bunch of rattatas and pidgeys. Then when you find other rock-types and Onix, you know what to do because you learned. :) It's not weak because it's bad, it's weak because it's DESIGNED to be weak. It's a counter to "only press A", so it is countered by pressing literally anything else.

But then I learned that, in Paris, public urination is legal, and in fact so common that you can't safely step into any puddles for fear that it's actually a puddle of piss.
