I love that you answer these questions honestly and objectively. It's very easy to get emotional about "the miracle of life" but you've narrowed it to "overpopulation = suffering" in a way I respect and agree with. I love cats but there are no shortage of cats in the world. We're not going to run out. Go to any animal shelter and they would love to have you leave with a cat. The more strays we spay the better it is for everyone.

I find that so-called miracle manufactured consent. It should be talked about objectively and in terms of what's happening in reality and not project human emotions onto animals. I've even heard a anti-abortion person talk about spaying and neutering as crimes. I kid you not.

Hormonal fluctuations suck. All the spayed & neutered kitties no longer be held hostage by hormones probably wouldn't describe their post-surgery bit-less lives as being bland Nothing. Thank you for the progesterone and estrogen information! I'm currently on kitten watch 2024. Snowball, the lovely momma, has been trucking along just fine. After her accident litter, she IS getting spayed. Her brother - the unfortunate father - has finally been neutered. The rescue the kittens came from never told us that they develop faster when co-habitated with the other sex. Best of luck to Girlboss and Grand Larsony in finding homes!

Is _that_ why I left my two young sibling black cats to go on vacation and came back to a pregnant girl one, when I'd thought they were too young to worry about?! I was in denial until the last couple of weeks, while she kept getting rounder and rounder. 🤣 Apparently my short-hair black momcat "got around"--I'm pretty sure there were _two_ fathers! She had three beautiful sealpoints (two were medium-hair aka Balinese, the other a short-hair). Since two gold-eyed black cats probably can't make blue-eyed Siamese/Balinese, even though they may have had some Siamese in their mix, I'm assuming the father was a handsome blue-eyed Balinese. _And_ she also had two lovely green-eyed grays (one medium-hair, one short-hair) and a medium-hair gold-eyed black (identical in looks and personality to his probable uncle/daddy). Both the grays had "exotic" looks and those green eyes, so I kind of assumed their dad might have been the handsome Balinese as well. But the sweet fluffy black boy kitten _had_ to be from her sweet, fluffy black brother! It was quite a bit of work finding help with vouchers to get all of them fixed. (I was unemployed at the time.) I felt so guilty; I've _always_ gotten my pets "fixed". I tried to keep them all, for quite a while! It's a good thing I was there (and awake) when she gave birth as she had absolutely no instincts. After the first three, she just acted like there was nothing more going on. Number 5 was breach--the medium-hair gray with the gorgeous green eyes with a teal ring around them. I had to "assist" or that one may very well not have made it! And to quote a famous movie line: "I don't know 'nuthin' 'bout birthin' no babies!" But I grabbed those little toes and wiggled those tiny legs until it came out enough to pull it the rest of the way out...with no help from momcat. I was afraid the baby would suffocate in the birth canal. Once I finally got it out, I had to keep clearing it's nose and do some breaths to make sure it was breathing regularly. That kitten turned out to be very special and became the love of my life. Good luck with your pending family!

Got a phone call at 2:30 pm yesterday. A barely year old, very skittish cat was having kittens. Mama wasn't showing any signs of milk supply. Gave her tons of love, and helped clean the babies. They were so tiny. I don't have an incubator, but was lucky enough to find a foster with an incubator. We fed them every hour from 3 to 10 when they were picked up. Wasn't my cat, but my best friend was working, and her son was in a panic.

I have four outdoor cats at home. Two of them I call Barn Cats because they are friendly and social. The other two, a mother and son duo, I debate whether to call them barn cats or feral cats. I trapped them and got them spayed and neutered. But they are very unsocialized and do not approve of human contact at all. It took a long time to get to where they would let us look at them even without running away.

I think that's why a lot of the fully outside stray cats came in labeled as semi feral, yes they were behaving feral but we expected that they would relax given some time and for all but a handful that's been correct. We had one who on the first night he was given access to the main floor of the shelter he got on-top of the room for kittens or sick isolation and from there crawled onto the hinges for the bay doors. He was placed in a foster home for a time after that to try and get him to calm down a bit more... It didn't really work he was brought back and placed in the kitten room because we found out he very much likes kittens and they make him feel a little more comfortable

anthropomorphizing animals always bothers me because it can literally stop people who don’t want animals to suffer simply because people feel bad… a mom cat will suffer on the streets and lose her kittens from diseases and starvation but that’s fine because “it’s nature”, but when a person is trying to help this animal it becomes “but this cat will feel bad🥺” this isn’t even a moral argument because there’s no place for the cat’s emotions when they’re currently dying outside

Just finally managed to trap a now semi-feral mama I've been after for 4 YEARS, who was on her 8th(!!) litter (that we know of)!! She's extremely trap savvy, had to lure her into our garage and close it to get her to finally go in the cat trap. Got her a spay/termination bc there was literally never going to be another opportunity to spay her, and she had no business going through another litter. She's been so relaxed now that shes not constantly being chased or having/raising babies(she wasn't a very sweet momma to them either).

The TNR I help with does spay-aborts. The vets have euthanizing meds on hand for the larger "pods" (pregnant uteri resemble pea pods) so that the fetus(es) don't suffer once the uterine horns are removed. They don't open the horns, but do inject into the "pods." I never asked the vets if they had a specific point in gestation where they do this, but my assumption is maybe during the last week of pregnancy when kittens might have a chance if born prematurely. I've never seen them do it for smaller "pods."

Another genuine question about spay aborts: Ive heard cats dont generally have the same connection to their babies as other animals, once they’ve stopped nursing its like they forget/move on from ‘oh your my babies’. Is this something you see? And do you think this impacts the cats lack of reaction to spay aborts? What do you think goes on with those rare cases of depression after loss in some cats?

Do cats have a regular cycle like humans (like menstruation) or is it only in a certain periods (pun not intended)? I once had 2 indoor female cats I didn't get spayed for a couple of years, no change of kittens, and I think in spring and fall they would be in heat 2 -3 times (per season). Eventually I got sick of their behaviour when they where in heat and did get them spayed.

I have spoken with my colleagues about spay-aborts and while we are on board, they are worried about having to euthanise the kittens themselves if they are viable and therefore don't like to spay-abort past a certain point. This happened once as we didn't realise how far along one of the cats was. Is this something you've encountered?

I read an older book once about cats and the author was CONVINCED that neutering/spaying a cat was the most horrible and evil thing you could do. He said there were other ways to stop cats from getting pregnant but still let them get hormonal and keep their reproductive organs, and he said you should do those instead of spaying/neutering because it makes it so that the cats still feel like they have a "purpose" and a "will to live" and it's evil to not let them try to reproduce. I personally disagree, but what do you think? He also said that having an indoor cat was cruel and evil and torture, which I also disagree with. (side note: the rest of the book was really good, those were the only problematic bits)

Sounds unhinged. I imagine he had some interesting thoughts on the reproductive choices of female humans, too.

Treating animals as though they're humans in hairy suits doesn't set you up to help animals, and that seems to be the attitude this author has.

If the uterine horns are removed intact while full, do the kittens pass of asphyxiation, does the anesthesia put them to sleep forever... what happens to the kittens?

I had another question lol 😂 when a mama has babies do you wait to spay her after she’s done nursing or do you spay her right away so she is healing while with you and would those hormones being removed affect her milk production?

I'm no expert, but from what I understand, once the pregnancy has triggered lactation for nursing in a mother cat, she'll continue producing milk so long as there is nipple stimulus (i.e. kittens actively trying to nurse). Even after spaying. It kind of makes sense biologically; the milk a mama cat produces for her kittens represents nutrition and calories she's not keeping for herself, so it being initiated by pregnancy but controlled by kitten demand instead of a hormonal period means that once her kittens are weaned, her body can more quickly shut off milk production and let her recover more fully for another pregnancy.

If you spay abort a mother who was like REALLY close to giving birth, then the fetuses aren't really fetuses anymore, are they? The kitties should be ready to be born, right? What happens then?

She might be swatting because you wear glasses. Cats and dogs dont understand that the reflection they see is them. Try a session with them off to see of if calms her some. People remember - you should never approach someones dog or cat with glasses or sunglasses on please. They are not aggressive just not designed for human amenities. Thank you and keep up good work. They are all starfish on a beach.

This is the excellent point! Young children also sometimes get nervous about glasses; if you wear glasses and a friend's baby can't look at you without crying, that's a good guess to start with. That said, I know an outdoor cat (a mouser who is good at her job) who only allows the lady of the house to hold her... unless you're a chubby person with long hair and glasses. Something about that combination makes you an Okay Person to this mouser. Her owner is a slim lady with short hair and glasses, so we're all confused but very grateful that her preferences align with the genetics on this side of the family 😂

Wait, on the note of kitty hormones-- do cats have an equivalent menopause like when a human with ovaries gets them removed?
