@@mkman9530 i gave my players a magic mirror that can trap 1 person in it who looks inside. it "was" suppose to trap the first person who looked it in i "thought" one of the players and they would have to try and get him out. did that happen? nope... they find the mirror wrapped in cloth on a dead guy in a secret room. the one player picked it up and he said he inspects it i was about to tell him how he unwraps the cloth looks into the mirror and gets trapped inside. but as i start he said. no no i dont unwrap it i inspect it, as in i want to know what i am holding, what i think is in the wrap using basic judgment. i was like oh. he rolled a 19... ok you seem to be holding a hand mirror wrapped in cloth. he said hmmm i put it in my backpack. i was like dang.. ok.. soon. 6 or 7 months latter they are fighting a crazy hard boss i set up almost 2 months leading into. he shows up the big bad he starts making his speech. the player with the mirror says i take out the mirror in my bag from that one dead guy and unwrap it facing it to the bad guy. i was like wait what? what mirror? i forgot about the item as it never came back up. i was like omg why. so he faces the mirror at the bad guy making his speech the bad guy sees his reflection and gets trapped. they keep this guy in the mirror with them for almost 3 years after. till we ended with them traveling the world in a flying house. btw the player told me he suspected it was a cursed item from the beginning but didn't think it was really going to work cuz he didn't know if it really was cursed he just thought it might be lol.

@@dndbasement2370 Personally, I'm much more happy with the dm saying my spells are weaker or I have fewer slots if it means we can all just skip the ridiculous level of bookkeeping and assume my component pouch has every non GP cost component in it. (Still have to buy the incense for find familiar, gems for other spells, etc.) Now when the enemy rogue steals my pouch/focus, that's when I'll finally pull out the tables and chances to find a grasshopper leg (jump), spit in my hand (droplet of water for create or destroy water), have my bat familiar poop (fireball), snag the nearest cobweb (web), and prepare only verbal and somatic spells at the first long rest, etc. But that's still just temporary until i get it back at the end of the fight or buy a new one. Especially because the pounds per square inch of the surface area wouldn't be enough to break even a lot of human bones, let alone something as tough as dragon bone. Problem I keep seeing is petty DMs treating the game like it’s them vs the players. The fun is in putting obstacles in front of your players and seeing how they overcome them. They aren’t your enemies; they’re rats in your maze. You may occasionally reward them with cheese for cleverly solving a problem you gave them, but sometimes you also electrocute the floor. That reminds me of a campaign plot i had, feel free to use it as you want: basically we had finished the first part of the adventure that was succesfully trying to stop an archwizard to reach the "point of magical convergence" he basically made a whole disaster in the world as he began to absorb all magic to himself and tried to rule the world with his unlimited spells (the party was around level 8 when they killed him and the spells slots were only until level 3) so the next part of the story was that all the pissed off peasents, some nobles that got everything they own blown up, tried to seal the "magical convergence" so magic wouldnt be a problem ever more and that the world would be that much difficult to conquer, basically making an "anti magic pro science" cult. Obviusly they would come up with special weapons to fight magic againts magic to end magic. Special shackles that prevent use of somatic spells, long range chockers to prevent speaking, even loud explosions to deafen magic users so they wouldnt know if they were saying things right.

I gave a player a knife coated in a poison capable of killing anything (but only one thing) and rather than using the knife to kill the BBEG, she made a deal with the BBEG using the knife as a bartering chip. (Preface: sorry for the random 4-month-later ding, lol) Reading this made me start thinking of possible twists for this sort of item. Like, rather than instant death, what if it did a certain amount of damage per round, with no cure? Lower levelled enemies would die immediately anyway, but depending on how much damage you decided on stronger enemies would have different amounts of time before death. How would they spend that time? Zero self-preservation "I'll take you all with me" attack, or desperately trying to survive with healing? Would the players keep attacking to end the fight as quickly as possible and minimise damage, or hit and run to wait it out? Spells like Sequester could pause the timer, leading to dishonest bargaining ("I know a spell that will stop you from dying, in return..."), or trying to survive until there could be a cure, or just desperately delaying the inevitable. Or what if it killed the target after a minute, as long as the attacker was still alive? What if it was a spell with a long cast time? Or a limited-use upgrade to Power Word: Kill that lets you raise the HP threshold the longer you spend casting... but the target is immediately aware of the magic? Or what if it only worked on certain targets? Like unintelligent creatures with no alignment, or creatures matching the wielder's alignment, encouraging players to try and play enemies against each other? Or a target you truly hold no significant enmity towards, so it's useless for vengeance but perfect for a callous villain for whom this is just another Tuesday. Can you make the BBEG *care* about killing you enough that they can't use the magic kill-everything dagger to do it? This very quickly turned into word vomit directly from my imagination and I am (sort of) sorry. Hopefully some of my nonsense inspires new ideas in someone else.

@@EzloMinish So I play a combination of several White Wolf games in the World of Darkness series. This dagger was given to the player by a god (Loki) who had special interest in this enemy being killed. The player using it in a bargain lead me to some even more unique ideas for story elements. The dagger isn’t the only thing in my game that deals damage to literally any being it’s used against; however, all weapons with this effect have the same drawback. They drain the users hit points in accordance to how you use them. Almost every player has had access to a weapon like this throughout the game but they typically aren’t aware of the drawback until it starts happening.

I mean yeah sure. Let me ask though : Would you expect the novel protagonist to win without it? Because D&D does. It works in novels, because it's impossible task. So hero needs to find an item that will save the day. As an example, in CoS I personally found that having all 3 artefacts and 11th lvl (one player left, so I gave them level instead, 3vStrahd :D ) And just the sunsword is so powerful against him. I don't advocate not to use those, I just think it'd be cool to think about ways that PC's and Monsters are balanced. Without magic items.

@@diablo.the.cheater "what is a role-playing game but a way of collective storytelling?". A game. And what makes a game fun? Enough challenge to make it engaging without being so difficult that it is frustrating, among other things. By defeating an enemy with little to no difficulty you are not only ruining the combat for yourself by making it too easy but also you are ruining the combat for everyone else who gets to do literally nothing. Like you said, it's collective storytelling. Sure maybe the Fighter is having fun while cutting off the BBEG's head with a vorpal sword but what about what about the Wizard or the Rogue who have now not been able to do anything to contribute to the story? And also, how is it a better story or more poetic to defeat an enemy through, for instance, putting them in a bag of devouring, rather than a battle to the death between a group of adventurers who have trained all this time just to be strong enough to have a chance against a near insurmountable enemy ?

As for the fortress, I'd probably rule that it can only be activated if placed on the ground, but if you time it right, you could still probably smack a dragon with it, if you're willing to severely damage the fortress from ramming into a several ton creature.

I also like a hard fought combat, but if my players are capable of figuring a new and innovative way to go at the game, I thoroughly enjoy hearing their ideas. I had a bard at one of my tables that beat the BBEG of a rather low level campaign simply by convincing him that their actions were wrong and to be what they always wanted to be. Needless to say a persuasion check was needed, but 2 weeks later the BBEG became the town's new alchemist and a couple months later discovered a cure to the Lycanthropy that plagued the lands, and at an affordable cost. I rather enjoyed that more than simply hacking and slashing. Of course the players received all of the loot they normally would have, they did clear the encounter, and they were given the same XP as would have been provided for beating the guy.

But, I did preemptively come up with a list of ways I could make it useful to a somewhat overpowered degree if the time ever arose (mostly because my DM explicitly told me that she had no idea how I could use it in a useful manner, whereas some of the other party members received very obviously useful magic items ; most notably, one player got both a Grey Bag of Tricks and an Ebony Fly, which were both used to a great degree, albeit extraordinarily irresponsibly). But interrupting verbal spells was actually not on that list, surprisingly. I don't know how I didn't think of that. I actually sent the list to my DM when I came up with it in Discord, so I could see what I had on there, because I don't remember all of it. I mainly remember that one of them involved another powerful exploit I had come up with.

You can also be a creative DM and, depending on the creature, have it work its way out of that problem, or, you know, guts squeeze against the button and turn it off as the creature attempts to swallow or regurgitate whatever is causing it pain in the current position. Also, making something swallow an immovable rod is neither unique nor creative at this point, unless you're a rare person who hasn't heard of that trick which is widespread in the memetic of D&D, in which case it is creative but not unique because it's just as widespread as casting fireball or installing unseen hazards to make suggestion spells dangerous, to the point that suggesting someone do anything but take a surprise dangerous route is more unique than otherwise.

I wish that was less common that it is. I'm currently playing a campaign with a DM who changed my Divine Smite Damage type to Necrotic from Radiant in a campaign mostly filled with Undead and Fiends, due to my pact with Orcus, the caveat was that I was allowed to take a homebrew feat that let me treat Necrotic immunity as resistance and ignore necrotic resistance. He then, also, let me multi-class into UA Undead Warlock, but never realized how much sheer Necrotic damage I could put out. Now he arbitrarily decides when the feat works. Basically, if I crit with a longsword I can do 4d10 Necrotic + about 6D8 Necrotic Damage from the smite. Even if the target is immune to Necrotic Damage, I can treat it as resistance and still do about half of the resulting damage roll, due to the homebrew feat. The problem is that he will arbitrarily decide which creatures are affected by my feat and which aren't, so sometimes the entire hit is completely wasted because the target will retain its immunity. However, the next monster over who has the same stat-block as the one I hit, won't retain its immunity when I hit. I always write it off as DMs ruling is set in stone, but he makes it painfully clear that he is making the monsters' stat blocks up as the encounters progress.

An aspect of Tiamat appeared through a portal, two of the players ended up misty stepping onto her back and put the immovable rod between her wing muscles. I loved how creative they were with it so I went ahead and ruled she couldn’t take off without ripping the rod into her even more deeply. But she still has legendary actions which was also neutered because the monk that was on her back has evasion at those levels. Her breath weapons never hit him. They did, however, hit another player who didn’t have evasion and almost died.

Then wait for however long you want for gravity to take its toll on the literal mud-statue or maybe draw on it with your finger or twist its hands around or whatever your fiendish heart desires and then cast mud to rock and finally stone to flesh. If however you get a DM who wants to use semantics against you by saying something like "Uhhh well akshually, the spell isn't called rock to flesh, it's stone to flesh so it wouldn't work", then simply let him find his own ride home.

@WhiteTowerGuard the immovable rod? you can go through all kinds of threads here and find all kinds of ways. It's a button press so it's possible it could end up pressed when the dragon is thrashing or moving around to get itself free. The dragon with it's strength could rip itself free since the Strength check is only for removing the rod not for the dragon ripping itself free. You could have the dragon heal once it's free. Or flee the battle wounded depending on the setup. You could have it lash out or seriously harm the person in it's mouth though Dragon's don't usually swallow enemies in D&D. it's more a chomp them up and spit them out kind of thing (bite attack). You could even rule that all it's done has limited the dragon's movement. A dragon can do a heck of a lot of damage without moving a single square because of hteir size and damage capabilities. And being stuck in that particular square doesn't mean it can't turn around should you try shenanigans like get behind it. Also besides healing itself if the dragon has spell casting ability it could use powers such as misty step or other teleportation spells to free itself because that is not moving the rod. Also. Magic items can suffer from issues like begin disenchanted or broken though that's not heavily represented in 5e for the disenchantment side and breaking them is usually only found in specific item descriptions. This is something that the Vox Machina Group actually tried on a chromatic dragon that was going to retreat to it's layer in the first campaign and Matt chose to have it simply do a few d6 worth of damage after the dragon made a certain DC strength check (it was like 20 or 25 i think) and then it flew off.

Side note... my favorite trap I ever planted as a GM... dungeon corridor, kobold jumps out (ambush round) throws his spear, manages, between surprise and initiative to get back around the corner before the PCs can respond, so they run down to the corner. They get their just in time to see the kobold run through what is obviously an illusionary wall (good useful spell- L4, permanent until dispelled). They sprint down the wall discover that well, the bottom half of the wall is pure illusion the top half is very much a real stone wall. I don't remember what rule I used for damage but a couple of them were knocked out. The kobolds had a chance to throw some more spears and basically they could throw their spears and run away and the players wouldn't break into hot pursuit. They were paranoid the rest of the dungeon.

If we're in an area that's open enough we could either use the fortress to hide behind 3/4 cover while blasting the enemies with ranged attacks. Or if the enemy doesn't have any siege weapons or magic, then they wouldn't be able to enter, thus meaning the party could take a short/long rest in it to become more efficient. In this regard it works much like leominds tiny hut, but arguably much better. The only real downside is that if the enemy does have a way to damage the fortress then only the wish spell can repair damages

My favorite thing to do is to take “harmless/boring” items and try to make them useful. It’s so much fun. My favorite character to play by far was a “klepto rogue” who only stole common items like cutlery, bottles, and bedsheets. When facing against a large monster, instead of attacking I would cover its eyes with the bedsheet, or distract it by smashing bottles right behind it. We fought a black ooze and we were able to trap some of it in a glass bottle, where we were then able to use it on a cage later on. Who needs magic items when you’ve got a random assortment of bullshit

On the subject of the instant fortress, the fortress extends from the door, located on the piece. But if they throw it, they can't decide which side the doors on, so it can easily backfire

reminds me of a post i read about this one guy having a ring of dispelling and would dispell any magic within a few inches of it. So he askes the Wizard to shrink down some cannon balls, and fixes the ring at the end of his flint-lock pistol. So when the cannon balls fly through it they become normal size. Effectually making his pistol a easy portal cannon
