No sympathy for Lyle, but it sounds like Kay was holding his conviction over his head. In a "I'm the only one who will stay with you, but piss me off and I'll leave" way, a "if you piss me off too much, I'll let everyone know the truth" way. Or both

Yeah that was my thought too. Either they were together before than and she stuck it out while holding it over them, or she started dating him knowing she could make the relationship dynamic like this. End results the same but I just wonder how it happened

/u/TaleOfDash here from the first story. Just want to say that in spite of how truly horrifying the whole experience with Kai & Lyle was for us and how messed up we got from this whole experience, the comments both on Reddit and on KZread have honestly completely made our fucking week and made the whole event much easier to process and laugh at. So, thanks guys. And thanks DnD Doge for reaching out to ask for permission before using the story, that was much appreciated

The first story is a cautionary tale. Many people have dark and disturbing secrets in their lives. You may think a casual acquaintance seems fine, or at least harmless, but any person could turn out to be a monster. Stories like this make it hard to trust people. I've had some past acquaintances go bad, not to this degree, but still bad to the point that I never want to go near them again. I'm extremely wary of inviting people into my home. It might be best to have D&D games with strangers and casual acquaintances in a neutral public setting, such as a game store or a bar. I think the group dodged a bullet in the second story. Frustrated Freddy would likely have turned out to be a problem player. He was clearly unreliable, and I bet he would have been a chronic whiner.

I’m wondering what the wife’s deal was. Was it revenge on him if they were together at the time? Did she start a relationship and marry after the fact knowing she’d always be able to use that info against him? Whatever was going on it was the furthest thing from healthy

I was in the grocery store wearing my "Crit Happens" shirt (Has a d20 showing a 1 on it) and a total stranger came up to me and asked me if I play DnD. She told me she and her boyfriend were looking for a new DM because their DM was in jail. I made up an excuse about having too much on my plate already and noped to the checkout line.

While in the first story i totally understand the fear and everything as well as me not wanting anything to do with him... I feel bad for him. It's clear that his wife is using his grotesque offense to control him and make his life miserable. I feel horrible knowing he may never get the real help he needs with her around hanging not only that failure over his head as if being on the list isn't bad enough... But probably teasing and enabling his gross interests on a basic level to make sure he always is under her thumb and can use his guilt and interest to stop him from reaching out for help from that abusive relationship and to get real help for his condition. I wouldn't be surprised if that witch has her own misconduct that hasn't come to light yet and she'll use him as a scapegoat if she ever gets caught, dragging him down with her.

Years now of being a married DM I have learned to just avoid having couples at your table. Have them for short stints or guest appearances playing an occasional session as a DMPC you don’t want to deal with, perfect. Luckily, our wives are cool and happy to let us dudes have a night every now and again to ourselves. It’s been just great making D&D be a guys night out from the wife and kids and after the pandemic it has so been healthy and fun, the whole gang looks forward to it.

Yeah me as well! Hell in FF14 One of my character's was a Lalafell that I played "in the physical Jobs" cause I found it funny and role played them in such (Great fun, and a character I like in Granblue Fantasy and is VS game is Charlotta cause I did enjoy her character and the comedy with her having "height issues" despite being of a the shortfolk race and still being able to beat the shit out of those of races far bigger then her with near easy!) I was mostly inspired by Mazzy from Baldur's Gate 2. A Halfling who inspired to be a Paladin despite this being from the time non-pure human could be Paladin. Damn good party member and fighter LOL. But yeah as much as I hate the association garbage, people like that couple are the reason such a mindset remain strong and somewhat legit! They were terrible even without knowing about lyle's "past"

I'd be TERRIFIED to play with this couple! It's been my dream to become a mother one day ever since I was little (I'm planning to adopt as I don't wanna force myself into a relationship just for the sake of having children), and a majority of my life I've worked with kids. My mom is a dance, sports and theater teacher and I've assisted in her classes multiple times, my mom often babysits for her friends and family and I often help out, I once worked in the library of my local elementary school, and now I work at the local community center where I assist classes for young children. I've even developed natural skills of how to approach children I don't know and present myself in a caring and safe way that lets them know that I'm not a threat to them if I notice a child is lost, misbehaving, or got hurt. It's a natural instinct of mine to make sure kids are safe and happy, so I can't help but rush up to them if I notice something wrong. Luckily, parents never seem worried or scared when I approach their kids. I often actually get thanked by parents for helping out with their kids and am asked how I'm so good with them. I swear, over half the town knows who my mom is and are like "oh, that makes sense" as soon as I tell them that I'm my mom's daughter. As you can tell, kids are a very important part of my life and I am absolutely horrified that there are people out there who could possibly have such awful thoughts about children. It absolutely sickens me to no end.

I think your attitude, and the attitude of the players towards the couple in the first story is pretty shitty. I know a sex offender personally that committed the exact same crime but he's not am evil human being. Granted he's also not attracted to kids. When you otrasize someone, and push them out of all social circles, whatever trait they have that may have disgusted you, gets WAAAAAY worse. If these people are no longer allowed to interact with anybody or build any personal relationships after theyve committed their crime, then you just guarantee theyll either repeat it or get worse. The chance of rehabilitation almost disappears. I know the idea of welcoming a sex offender to the neighborhood cookout sounds bad at the best. But it's important to remember every situation is different and not everyone is unforgivable. I think it's disgusting that person was outed to everybody in such a dirty way. It sounds like they didn't even talk to the couple at all after they found out the info and then just decided to TELL EVERYONE whether or not it was their business. All I can say now is that I hope yall change in the future. Learn to treat people as individuals and not as part of a group.

Nah, op and his gf were kicked out first because they wouldn't play ball with the couple's toxic behavior. If anything they're wallowing in their own self degradation, with the wife controlling the husband using the crime as leverage. Also, pedophiles shouldn't be allowed around children for obvious reasons, they did the right thing by warning everyone. And lastly, wdym you know someone who commited the same crime but isn't attracted to kids? what, did he store child pornography because he liked the composition? lol
