Where's the part where the new player, who started as a 4, but had a good match or two in the regional tournament, finds himself bumped up to a 5, the next morning, causing him to lose his semi-final match and NOT go to Vegas? This happened to me, after my first APA season (winning only 40% of my regular season matches, as a 4).

I’ve been a 4 for 3 sessions all with 80% win rate and still haven’t moved up. League operators man.

@@itsallen4393 Which leads to another beef I have with their system: a 4 in one league may be a 5 in another league. So when you play someone in a regional tournament, you might be ranked the same, but very different skill levels. It's not consistent across the board. Congrats on 80% wins, btw.

@@garybkatz There are a ton of factors you're not factoring in here. Sure you can win 80% of the time and stay a 4. Keep playing low handicap players, get a ton of innings, go hill hill most matches, little to no safes, take every coach... clearly you're not as good as someone getting 80% wins against 5-6-7's. And the regional thing makes sense in terms of algorithm. If your region has low overall skill, people will get artificially moved up. If the region is strong and active, you'll lose more and go down. The real issue is Vegas when they all come together. As a 6 playing another 6, I was smoked 5-1 in 6 innings with 2 BnR's and 2 safes. Fargo was 555 but plays stronger than most 600's in my region. Again, it all depends on who you play and their skill.

@@Poolside_Chat Good points. When I got moved up from a 4 to a 5, mid-regional tournament (not Vegas), it was triggered by one good match I shot against a 6. 3-4 racks of me being in stroke prevailed over my entire body of work, over the regular league session. It could've been worse, I suppose. It could've put my team in trouble with their silly 23 rule, so we would've had to forfeit one of the matchups. But it did cost me my match against a 4, which I would've won, had I stayed a 4. Eliminated my team from playing in the finals and a shot at Vegas. I honestly don't know if this debacle resulted from the league operator messing up, or the general APA algorithm being defective. Either way, bad taste in mouth. Thanks for reading and commenting.

@@garybkatz If I could make a suggestion, stop looking at handicaps as a solid number. It's a range, a scale. I usually apply people to low/mid/high of each handicap. Plus on top of that, the higher the skill level, the wider of range to stay that handicap. It doesn't take much skill to move from 2-3. A little wider range from 3-4. 6 is the widest handicap group and then 7 is unlimited. With that said, sure one good win against a 6 won't move you up. It's a culmination of your last 20 or so matches. So if you've been doing real well against 4's and 5's then beat a 6, that probably moved you up. Win by a lot, lose by a little, you'll get moved up. But yes, the operator has the authorization to move people as they see fit.

Sure, except new players to APA can't play in a tournament unless they play 10 matches in their FIRST season. Kept me from helping my team in the TRICUPS this last session. So yeah, not really.

I joined a team a few years ago. This was just after the APA/NAPA split, and I had seen the scoring system that APA uses. NAPA scoring is so much better. And so is their rating system for players. Sure, I was literally the worst player in the league (my highest ranking was 12 on a scale of 1 to 100), but I still had fun. And we didn't care if we weren't going to Vegas. I know people who are on APA teams, and I know places that are exclusively APA locations. But I'm not sure I could ever do APA.

APA Vegas where 4's shoot like 6's

Ah yes the pyramid scheme keeps rolling. The player that’s new is pretty good for a starting skill level. Gets to Vegas as 3 and shoots like a 7. Pretty typical. Also to think just getting on a team and you automatically get to Vegas is a load of horse shit. I’ve been playing in the apa for I think 12 years and have never been. It’s always one more tournament. Oh we won, yeah you gotta win one more tournament. Never ends

It's literally two tournaments to get your team to Vegas. Tricups and the World Qualifier. So it actually does end. 🤷🏽‍♂️😂
