One of my favorite DnD characters was Krushgar, half-orc battlemaster, who was NOT the child of rape. His large and very ugly father fell in love with a large, equally ugly orc woman, and the two had a child. Since their union was not accepted by humans or orcs, they had to live in isolation. This left them very vulnerable to bandit attacks, and sure enough, they were slain while little K was out playing in the woods. The rest is cliched AF from there, but it just goes to show that with a little creativity, you too can play a half-orc without the need for "lore accurate SA".

10:14 I’m old enough to remember that the seductive bard is a Flandersization of the low damage 3rd Ed bard which was a super solid support/skill monkey, but it took a lot to get the Bard to do damage. Well, this lead to a joke about “well all those tricks are need, but what will you do against a dragon” cut to nervous bard facing angry red dragon. Bard says “umm I use (yada yada 3rd stuff no one uses anymore) diplomacy to try and make the dragon like me.” Rolls well and adds all the bonuses, cut to back to bard and dragon only now the dragon has a sultry look, lipstick 👄, eyeshadow, etc. DM says “you succeed evil grin 😈 ” scared bard says “Yeah?” From that we got to the bard that was into it, with jokes about “well where did you think half dragons came from”, to today’s rather reductive pansexual bard. All that to say, none sexy bard is very canon, don’t let them tell you otherwise.

I looked at Pathfinder 1E's lore, and the wording was "They are seen as the offspring of violence or perversion, and are shunned because of it." HOWEVER, this is a clear prejudice and not necessarily a universal truth. Still not cool for him to insist on it, and his reaction of calling everyone snowflakes plus his ragequitting when the DM held onto that boundary is quite telling.

For the Glory Story, I play in a campaign where the Moon Druid will start fights as a Wind Elemental from exploration, then fly above enemies and switch to Earth Elemental. The official lore on half-orcs is arranged marriages. SA is _implied,_ but not stated, and there's definitely nothing in canon about ALL orcs being abusers - in fact the lore is that they're refugees, living in diaspora, nomads resorting to violence because they have no other options. My response would be 'okay then, you're not allowed to play a half-orc.' For anyone who's curious, there's about a 4:1 weight ratio between iron or copper and organic materials. I know that off the top of my head from having had to figure out the weight of my own robot characters in the past.

For the first story, does it really matter if the characters origin story was that he was born of SA? As long as he’s not mentioning it constantly in every game session, I honestly don’t see the problem. Maybe he wanted his half-orc to be a ranger, and that his hated enemy was going to be orcs, and that was supposed to be his motivation. When I read the title of the first story, I thought that a player wanted his character to be a r*pist and was upset that the DM wouldn’t let him. THAT I can understand why it would be an issue. But for it to be his character’s backstory? I’m sorry, but I don’t see the issue. As long as it’s just written down as to where his character comes from and why he hates orcs, and never really gets brought up in game, then it shouldn’t matter. Now if he continually tries to bring it up in game, then it becomes an issue and there needs to be a discussion. However, he should have been given the chance to play first instead of just assuming that he is going to be a problem player.

Although the DM did say that he only asked that he tone it down a bit, so maybe he went into a little too much detail in his written backstory? But we don’t know the details of the backstory. He could have gone into extreme detail about all 300 members of the orc war party taking turns on his mother, or he could have simply said “My mother became pregnant with me after being repeatedly assaulted by members of an orc war party.” One simple sentence that explains everything without going into graphic detail. Very true, the DM can rewrite the lore for orcs as they see fit. In my world, the orcs that are described in the Monsters Manual aren’t true orcs. They’re actually half-orcs. True orcs are bigger, stronger, and more aggressive. Think “Reavers” from TV’s Firefly. The offspring of the MM orcs and humans aren’t technically half-orcs, they’re actually one quarter orcs. It’s just that so few people survive the raids of TRUE orcs that they don’t even understand that there’s a difference. They actually believe that MM orcs are true orcs. In truth, MM orcs believe that they are true orcs. Very few people outside of the true orcs themselves actually know about true orcs.

I think this gets into a weird point in that the circumstances of the conception of a character almost never come up in a game. The fact you mention it in a back story can provide connection and justification for relationships, so it can be an important part for the character and how they play them. I generally, do not see it within the realm of other players to edit a player's back story. An element like that is easily avoided mentioning as in over 30 years of play one pc has never gone up to another and asked, "so, tell me how you were conceived." It would be different if the player was pushing for playing through a flash back or something, but saying the existence of a real person is not OK either.

That guy clearly knew nothing about the times in question, and just wanted to look smart. I mean, car ownership may not have been quite as common in the '30's as today, but there were still plenty of cars - they'd passed the 'crazy novelty fad for rich people' stage several decades ago at that point. Also, even if one accepted the statement of 'cars were only for the rich back then' at face value, the character was ROBBING a car. What's contradictory about robbing a rich guy's car? Isn't that exactly the sort of car that WOULD get robbed?

It is the of any game master to know what triggers their players and what is safe to be in the game. Can SA be a plot point, sure, but not at the cost of someone having to relive a painful moment of the pass. That is not a price I would pay. People play these games to relax and unwind. I have taken these words more and more to heart as I grow older both in years of life and as I gain experience as a GM: know your players.

First story: I don’t know where the “all orcs are r@pists” idea came from. I’ve read Lord of The Rings, and the orcs never r@ped anyone. The threat they posed was that they would kill you in a fight, or eat you if they captured you. Also, according to the 5e Player’s Handbook, half-orcs are born when human and orc civilizations form alliances and seal them with marriages. No mention of r@pe. I think this guy got his orc lore from bad LOTR fanfic. Second story: Well, that’s confusing. I understand why this Rain guy kept getting kicked, but I don’t understand why he just randomly initiated PVP. What was he trying to do? It doesn’t make any sense. Third story: OP, I suggest talking to this player like the adults you presumably are. Say something like: “hey, I’m not enjoying the history lectures. Could you please tone it down?” Also, I suggest checking in with the GM and other players to see if it’s bothering them as well. If it is, maybe they can back you up. Fourth story: I would have told the sorcerer: “you’re a Charisma-based class. If you’re so adamant that the guard be seduced, seduce him yourself.” I would also have provided her with a link to Ginny Di’s video about bards and why one doesn’t have to stick with the stereotypes associated with them. I hope OP finds a better group to play their bard in! Fifth story: Oh good lord. Talk about a toxic mess. I hope nobody was too traumatized by whatever the fuck that was! Sixth story: I love when players come up with creative solutions to problems.

First Story: No, this guy was an old school player who had been playing D&D LONG before 5th Edition came out with their “Ye Old Starbucks” and “Wizard Prom” modules, sensitivity readers, and politically correct crap that takes the teeth out of the game. In the older editions of D&D the most common ways half-orcs are born is through SA. Human settlements that share borders with orc settlements didn’t sign treaties and seal them with interracial marriages. They were in constant conflict with each other, with the orcs typically being the aggressors. And to be honest, I prefer them that way.

@@vegeta002 Well in earlier editions it was expressly stated that SA was the most common cause of a half orc existing. Now I personally don't mind that. I personally run games with darker tones and prefer the canon of my game to have non-human races acting in ways that are considered strange, alien or feral to keep them from just becoming humans with a coat of paint on them. But I fully understand not every player wants a game like that and every DM will have their lore tweaked to their liking. No one side is better then the other. It is just a preferred tone.

Story one; That "lore" was only ever heavily implied, and that was way back in AD&D. Every edition since has recognized what a mistake it was to include that. SA should never be a part of canon lore. Story three; Accuracy only matters if the group wants it to. Bonus glory story; Some of the best moments come from "useless" items.

The art connoisseur is a really good way to go, if you don't want to play a slut. Just because you are a bard with high Charisma, doesn't mean you want to do every Tom, Dick and Harry. Bards are artists as well. They are minstrels. Not prostitutes. And not gypsies. Why didn't they ask the Rogue to do that. Or you know what? The sorcerer's primary stat is Charisma. Why didn't she do that? The problem is, the seduction route is just trouble, and it runs with a lot of risks. The act would be far better, with less long time risks. Plus, it helps with potential identities if they need to go under disguise. I'd probably pull the "He's really gay" card out, just to throw that monkey wrench out.

It's more an idea from 1e, though it's something you'd easily read between the lines and not something explicitly said. The 1e MM states that orcs are fecund and crossbreed with just about anything, and that they take slaves, believe that women only exist to bear offspring, and believe in conquering/supplanting all parts of the world, so it isn't hard to come to the conclusion that orcs are indeed rapists. The scarier part is the fact that most half-orcs are indistinguishable from ordinary orcs to begin with (PC half-orcs are assumed to be the 10% who can pass for ugly humans), which means that orcs can assimilate and breed out almost any population they conquer. That most half-orcs would be born from rape is more or less a given, but this player didn't even need to bring it up. The DM didn't even ask him to change his back story, only to tone it down.

Maybe the rapist parent could be the Big Bad of a storyline? But everyone in the group should be okay with it.
