Plated/Clutch, Torsen, and Open Differentials Compared with Track Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We recently installed a 1.5way Cusco Plated (Clutch Type) limited slip differential in the rear of our STI transmission to gain more grip and more rotation out of corners. Here I go over the tech aspects of this differential and compare it to the OEM torsen style as well as an open differential.
Then we hit the track to see how it feels.

Finally someone did a comparison between the 2.

Great video. Im getting the 1.5 installed soon, on my '15 WRX, and found this super helpful. Much Appreciated.

You guys should find a similar STi (stock rear diff) and compare the differences when upgrading differentials, maybe run them in a slalom test and a figure 8 test, anyways keep up the great content

We did run the car without the diff on the same track and it was slower. I mention it near the end of the video.

@@stratifiedauto I know you spoke of it but demonstrating it on video like the Japanese (Best Motoring/Motor Trend) is what I was talking/suggesting, just throwing it out there for a future video possibly

@@AlexP-yb7gh what are you looking to see? A skid pad with on throttle and off throttle is where this would show the oversteer/ understeer characteristics. This LSD upgrade is a mod where only when you're driving AT&BEYOND THE LIMITS will you feel the differences. The handing character does change and you must drive the car a certain way to be fast. Cornering isn't an easy in easy out anymore like open/ Helical diffs. An LSD upgrade are for more advanced drivers who can adapt and change driving inputs on the fly to make the vehicle dance the way they want it to. The drivers in the Best Motoring/ Option videos know what they're doing. They help their race teams setup the car to their driving style. The average Joe/intermediate driver needs a lot of seat time to get there. Newbs are too quick to start buying suspension mods when they can't even handle a stock suspension WRX, let alone an stock STI with factory diffs. I tell new drivers all the time to get seat time with their stock suspension. Only when they've shown understanding and Demonstrates driving their vehicles to induce understeer/ oversteer, then we can look at changing the suspension to suit their driving style. It's after they've settled in with their suspension is when LSD upgrades are introduced. The suspension will need to be dialed in to work with the LSD. A tail happy setup needs to be dialed back because the LSD induces oversteer. Then the LSD lockup may need to be reduced if it's too tail happy for the driver. The track is the Battlefield. You will be slower in parts of the track and faster in other parts of the track compared to other cars. The LSD setup in combination with the suspension needs to be dialed in to get your best overall lap without making driving difficult. You could set it up to take a certain section of the track really fast, but does it effect the others parts of the track? Did it improve the time or stayed the same? Did it make driving the other sections more work? If it did improve the time, are you fine with that extra driving effort in the other section of the track for that improvement? A LSD isn't a mod to just stick in and go. You're going to need to be a capable driver to fully take advantage of it. Once dialed in it's a wonderful modification for creating a fun drivers car.

2:45 "These friction plates inside here offer a lot more friction amongst each other than you get on the edges of these gears in the torsen" WHAT??? lol

    That’s the lockup mechanism.

And the clutch plates last about 2 laps and then the lockup drops off.

    Wrong, Torsen never ever locks.

Lock simply means that torque is transferred from one axle to another. Each differential has an ability to do this to different degrees.

@@stratifiedauto No, lock mean that both axels are forced to rotate together, 100% of the torque is available on either axel. Torsen is a variation of the open differential, it can transfer around 70% of the torque instead of 50%. It is trash as it will drop torque to zero if one of the tire can't provide 30% of the grip, very unstable.
