Pink Floyd - Animals (remaster)

Музыка

Personal remaster of one of my favorite sonic experiences. There are really so many layers of depth here. For educational purposes--free to be monetized by the original artists.

In 1990 I was a 23 year old American working in England where I lived on the 10th floor of a council flat in Stockwell (South London). The view out of my bedroom window was of the Battersea Power Station at nearly the same height and angle as depicted on this album cover... only the flying pig was missing. Every morning I was so lucky to wake up to this "real life" view as depicted on this great album cover, a view that came with its own soundtrack. Now far away back home in Colorado I often listen to this amazing album and close my eyes, letting the indelible memory of the best time of my life come clearly back to me. Only now in my mind the pig is no longer missing.

and in 2019 Battersea Power Station is at the heart of one of central London’s largest new developments. The £9bn project will see the creation of a vibrant new destination for London, housing a community of homes, shops, cafes, offices, leisure and cultural venues, with over 19 acres of public space. The outline planning application for the Rafael Vinoly designed masterplan was approved by Wandsworth Council and the Mayor of London in 2010 and subsequently by the Secretary of State

"Pink Floyd's 'Animals' is a masterwork of musical storytelling and artistic expression. Released in 1977, this album showcases the band's unparalleled ability to merge intricate instrumentals with thought-provoking lyrical content. With its allegorical themes inspired by George Orwell's 'Animal Farm,' 'Animals' offers a compelling commentary on societal constructs and human behavior. From the haunting melodies of "Dogs" to the epic crescendo of "Sheep" and the introspective journey of "Pigs (Three Different Ones)," each track on the album is a testament to Pink Floyd's innovative sound and profound lyricism. The band's seamless blend of rock, progressive, and psychedelic elements creates a mesmerizing sonic landscape that continues to captivate listeners across generations. 'Animals' stands as a testament to Pink Floyd's enduring legacy as pioneers of musical experimentation and social commentary. Its enduring relevance serves as a reminder of the power of music to transcend time and resonate with audiences on a deeply emotional and intellectual level. Truly, 'Animals' remains a timeless masterpiece that continues to inspire and provoke thought in listeners around the world."

I think I heard it for the first time when I was maybe 20, and I still can't quit it. Of course, it has alot more meaning to me now than just great music as it was then. Its amazing how the story it tells is just as relevant today as when it was written. The more things change the more they stay the same, huh?

@@grahamdocherty9203 Yeah, Roger's a brilliant wordsmith. I also like the last line of "Time," that says, "the time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say." The irony, and the implication that senility is already setting in on him... his humor is witty and subtle. And it's interesting how he ties lyrics from the newer songs to lyrics of older ones. Hey You is a fascinating example of that.

This album was released in the *heart* of disco when that was the rage. Perhaps aside from the much earlier stuff with Syd, the rest of the library, even beyond Waters' departure, is challenging to pin to any particular post-rock timeframe, ergo timeless. I have to admit most of my listening experience has been Meddle, DSotM, WYWH, The Wall, and all post-Waters albums. I don't how/why I missed this masterpiece and can't stop playing it over and over again, enjoying it as if it were a new Waters-era release.

@@TheGolden0Man Steven WIlson of Porcupine Tree fame has been making great music for quite some time now. His solo work is quite admirable, and I personally recommend the 2012 album The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories). It has a similar sense of melancholy and musicianship to Pink Floyd (a comparison that he's been struggling to get away from for years), and Wilson is something of a modern legend in the prog rock world, having worked with many other legends both as a musician and for his mixes of quite a few big names' works. Pain of Salvation has a way of incorporating emotion in their songwriting in a way not dissimilar to Pink Floyd at their best, and Daniel Gildenlöw isn't afraid of addressing difficult subjects with his songwriting and using his personal life struggles as ammunition for concepts and lyrics. Their albums The Perfect Element Part I and Remedy Lane are their most celebrated releases, but they have a solid body of work throughout their career. Ayreon (the music project of Dutch musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen) is a wonderful journey of rock operas written in incredible detail, and the project's reputation has allowed for many big names to contribute their talents (primarily vocalists, but plenty of instrumentalists as well), including members of bands such as The Flower Kings, Dream Theater, Yes, Genesis, Focus, King Crimson, ELP, and plenty of others. The music does tend to lean a bit more into modern forms of progressive rock and even into metal a bit, but it's finely crafted and truly a treat for the ears. Beardfish, despite having broken up in 2016, was a solid Swedish band that had a strong rock sound influenced by the big names of 70s prog rock. They never got too experimental, but their music was really wonderful and (like so many fans of music from the past), they did seem to reminisce a bit too fondly of how music used to be instead of embracing the growth of music today, but they weren't so fixated as to prevent them from making fresh-sounding music. Thank You Scientist is a bit different from the rest of the bands listed here. They're a seven-man prog rock outfit that incorporates elements of jazz, metal, and even a bit of pop music into their sound. It's all very high-energy and melodic, with lots of layered parts and complex songwriting. I personally love them to death, and their newest album, "Terraformer" (2019), has me completely hooked right now. That's just my quick five for modern musicians who are still writing incredible music. Sure, they're not Pink Floyd no matter what, and that's fine. They never will be, but Pink Floyd could never be these bands either. What really matters is that music is still alive, even if the radio has no place for anything that isn't highly marketable and commercial. With Spotify and Pandora and KZread and all sorts of modern conveniences, it's easier than ever to find this music if you're really looking for it, but you have to go on that journey. You won't find it on the surface anymore, but the depth of what's out there is deeper than ever. It can be a bit scary, and not everything will be appealing, and all the modern styles are jarringly different from what once was, but that's what makes the trip so exciting. You never know what new ideas might catch you, or what will surprise you (in ways good or bad), but there will definitely be something you never knew existed, or never imagined was possible. It's definitely worth taking that time to dig in.

I now spend my 40 hours a week now tending grounds, pruning trees, raking sticks, and playing music that soothes my existence. I'm no longer rolling in cash, but my soul is f*cking intact and I have no regrets.

One thing I’ve always loved about this album is how it starts and ends with Pigs on the Wing. It’s the one glimmer of hope among the blistering rage of everything else. To me it expresses the solace, comfort, and appreciation found in your loved one (romantic, friendship, family, or otherwise) amidst all of the darkness and chaos. It’s like hey, I’m really grateful we have each other otherwise we’d be insane. Also, Dogs has by far the best guitar work from Gilmour, absolutely searing and devastating tone.

I have enjoyed Pink Floyd not just for their music, but for what their songs have to say about life...the good, the bad, the sad and the ugly parts of being human. Every day, I can listen to a song or look over the lyrics and find a new meaning I missed before. For me, Animals is also a continuance of Pink Floyd comparing our human existence with nature, going back to Echoes from Meddle: Overhead the albatross Hangs motionless upon the air And deep beneath the rolling waves In labyrinths of coral caves An echo of a distant time Comes willowing across the sand And everything is green and submarine. And no one called us to the land And no one knows the where's or why's. Something stirs and something tries Starts to climb toward the light. "No one called us to the land" sticks out to me as it questions why life emerged from the oceans in the first place and now look at us. We sometimes cannot even acknowledge that we are kin to the life that still exists beneath the waves. In the lyrics of Breathe, we are compared to nature in the following lyrics" Run, Rabbit, run Dig that hole, forget the sun When at last the work is done Don't look now; it's time to dig another one Long you live and high you fly But only if you ride the tide Balanced on the biggest wave, You race toward an early grave These lyrics look at how frivolous human lives can look from day to day and it questions what are we really accomplishing? We presume we are above all other life forms, but we scurry around, digging holes of one sort or another, just like all the other....Animals. And, eventually, we will die, just like other animals that live and...Breathe. How genius! So now, here is the album Animals that further compares us to Dogs, Pigs and Sheep. Love this album.

@@damienthompson5808 I do not like debating, but I have studied Biology and Genetics. Yes, at one time all life existed in the oceans and yes, it did gradually evolve...to become what we are now. Why do you think human embryos go through a stage in the womb where we have gill slits in the same place fish do? Fish also have a brain, two eyes, a mouth with teeth, a spinal cord. Their fins are analogous to our arms. Their eyes have pupils. Females have eggs and males have sperm cells. But, if you choose to ignore science, that is your choice and I will not debate you.

Now, as a 64-year-old man with a 16-year-old daughter (another story) who has recently become a huge Pink Floyd fan, so much so as to write a composition on Syd Barrett, because of a classmate of hers who is a fan gives me hope for humanity.

This has always been my favorite Floyd album of all time and I think the best guitar work of Gilmour's career. It hit my teenaged mind like a brick and the effects have never gone away. It is so tight the whole album plays like one very long and awesome fever dream. This version really kicks, but it's difficult to deviate from such an original. And the commercial right at a crucial moment kills the vibe. Music videos should only have banner ads.

I love the comments that all the fans posted below. I can totally agree on the brilliance of this masterpiece. As great as Dark Side is... as great as Wish You Were Here is.... as great as The Wall is... and as great as Meddle and all the other pre-Dark Side music is, there is something about Animals that gets me every time. From the guitar strumming at the beginning of Dogs thru the sounds of sheep and birds at the end of Sheep. At the time of writing this comment there are 400 thumbs downs. I sincerely hope they gave it a thumbs down because the experience unfortunately ends at 41 minutes 34 seconds.
