I'm masters educated myself, and became a vegan at 47 (four years ago) after careful and deliberate consideration. I grew up on a dairy farm and the cows grazed everyday when the weather was good. And in the winter they were sheltered beded and watered. My father who was a dairy farmer since a young boy offen got emotional when some cows got ill/injured & had memorised 100s of names/numbers given to the cattle. Not everyone can be painted with the same brush and most farmers like most people are kind and good natured.

So your father kept all the male cows around that didn't produce milk and just took the hit financially and let them live and graze on their entire life and let them die naturally of old age???... Because you're going to need some strong evidence that your father was able to do that and keep his farm going successfully if you want anyone with at least half a functioning brain to believe that he was able to take that financial hit and stay up and running unless you are claiming he only cares about female cows... Either way it's pretty much a %100 certainty that your story is missing some important elements that don't suit your narrative.. ;-)

I gotta say i normally love piers, but in this one he just whipped out the same counter arguments (Almond and avocado shit) that pleases the audience, and didn't let the lady speak. "It's a yogurt for goodness sake" Is really not a valid argument... just cause something on face level seems innocent because children consume it doesn't mean the process with which it is produced isn't unethical. The whole "What do you think happens in the wild" argument is also pretty invalid. Humans are much more sophisticated and intelligent than animals and just because they are gruesomely killed by other prey in the wild doesn't mean we can get away with slaughtering tens of thousands more in fucked up ways like gas chambers. Almonds & avocados are extremely water intensive plants and are causing massive environmental problems in California & central & South America. Both products are responsible for California’s water shortages. Fruits & veggies have been grown in central california for over a hundred years & there’s never been a water shortage problem until the farmers started using most of the farmlands for avocados & almonds.

Yeah I get that animals eat other animals in the wild in horrific ways, I also can't stand watching nature documentaries for that reason, but at least they had a chance at life and got to live the way nature intended. Animals that are prey to other species evolved with all sorts of features and abilities to give them are fair chance at escaping predators, and if they get caught it's brutal but it's survival of the fittest and the way evolution works. But the problem with humans is we don't evolve to suit our environment, we evolve our environment to suit us. No such evolutionary progress is to be had from the mass factory slaughter of animals. The animals we kill that were bred in captivity to be killed never stood a chance, and never got to experience life even for a short time. While some vegans do take it to the extreme I think it's totally normal for anyone to find the situation sad and wish it could be improved. I think the main issue at the core of it is just capitalism and overpopulation more than anything, as long as those continue to grow, cruelty in meat production will always be a symptom.

Last year I was invited to do some hunting. I shot an Impala and actually felt bad about it. 1 month later I went to the Kruger National park and one evening driving back to the camp we spotted a wild dog, with blood dripping from his mouth, super excited, like a dog that achieved something amazing. Upon driving closer he continued in his feasting on a freshly caught impala. The impala was still breathing, halve of his guts was hanging out, and the wild dog just continued to rip the buck apart without a care for it being still alive. Then I just realised, hunting is a lot less cruel, farming is a lot less cruel. On a side note, this is also why I'm a cat person, all the kills from big cats (Lions, Cheetahs and Leopards) I have witnessed (in my privileged live of growing up in Africa), the cats first kill before they eat, a lot less cruel.

What's hypocrisy is fighting tooth and nail for animals but turn a blind eye to all those who are killed before they see the light of day.

Here's the thing that always annoys me - Vegans always say things like, "I saw how they killed the cattle and I thought it was unethical." But instead of advocating for ethical killing practices of animals, what they actually want is for people not to kill animals at all. And that is too far of a jump in logic. Just because some people kill animals cruelly, that doesn't mean we, the consumers, have to stop eating meat entirely.
